My first ever Japanese teacher, a Japanese law school graduate who had studied German extensively but somehow ended up teaching Japanese in Italy, gave me the following explanation: "After the Meiji Restauration, Japan had to learn from many countries how to improve and modernize itself. The British and the Germans were the two peoples with whom we got along the best, but with the Germans, we felt a true spiritual affinity. So probably many Japanese want to see the country that was so instrumental in helping Japan become a modern country. And sure, after WW2, it was the US that inspired us the most, but Germany was our Original Master, our sensei as long as Modernity was concerned. Plus, Japan is a nearly perfect country, but this perfection comes at a high cost for us Japanese in terms of personal freedom and fulfillment. The Germans have managed to set up an incredibly efficient yet livable and welcoming country, yet they enjoy their lives and have no karoshi. Japan has no Oktoberfest". I swear I had no idea what she was talking about. I was 15 and had never set foot outside my native Latium. Now in my 40s and after studying, working, and teaching in China, and working in Italy alongside Japanese and Chinese coworkers, I have a crystal clear understanding of her words.
