Did you know that the World's Biggest Gold Nugget Ever Found with a Metal detector, was found right here in Australia?
And did you know that the lucky prospector that found the World's Largest Gold Nugget, had dreamt about it a few days beforehand. So convinced that he was going to find something significant, he actually drew a picture of the nugget he had dreamt about and got a friend to sign and date it! All this happened a few days before the discovery date.
On the 26th of September, 1980, Kevin Hillier discovered a massive gold nugget using his trusty metal detector. He had just discovered the Hand of Faith Nugget.
So, sit back and enjoy the little known backstory of the discovery, stay watching and enjoy the story.
The Hand of Faith Nugget weighed 876 ounces (27.2 kilograms) once all cleaned up.
Using today's gold price, which is $2161 US an ounce or $3300 Australian pesos, that means that nugget contained $2.9 million!
The story goes that gold was first found in the Bendigo area, by two woman. A Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Farrell, the wives of two workers from local pastoral property/ They discovered alluvial gold nuggets in Bendigo Creek while hand washing clothes in 1851!
By Christmas 1851 there were 800 people on the Bendigo field, by the following June 20,000 diggers had arrived from all over the world and risked everything to make a living (and, if they were lucky, a fortune).
While the rich alluvial finds initially attracted tens of thousands of eager seekers, it took less than three years before the declining amounts of surface gold, lead prospectors to follow the quartz reefs below the surface.
Although the easy rich pickings of the early years of the gold rush where, over, Kevin's discovery showed that the early prospectors hadn't found all the big ones.

Have had some success panning Bendigo Creek though there are swarms of tiger leeches in some spots along it. Biggest nugget found locally to my home was 'The Heron' at 1,001 oz.
