Very helpful! I was familiar with the concept of syntax trees but never looked into how to make them graphically. If you'll forgive one obsessively trivial point: A / is by convention a forward slash (or just a slash). The much less common \ is a backslash.

    • @FingtamLanguages
      @FingtamLanguages  4 роки тому +5

Thanks for the comment! I'm glad to hear the video was helpful. And yes, I didn't even think about whether it was a slash or a backslash. I think I just call them all backslash by default. haha

Thanks for the videos. We have been doing the same chat trees for both syntax trees and swahili language has the same format like this only the differences we can have the following ways
    1. By using trees as you have done
    2. By using arrows
    3.By using bracketing
4.By using diagram or table form
    Example of arrows:
    S-NP and vp
    Np-Det and N
    Det-the
    N-dog
    Vp-v and Np
    V- eats
    Np- Det and N
    Det-the
    N-food

@@FingtamLanguages Same here. I didn't know natural human languages can be described using syntax trees, so this was very cool coming from a computing background. After all, languages are all about expressing ideas, whether through communication or through instruction. Computer-wise, I imagine it's very important for studying natural language processing and AI (Grammarly, etc.).

How do you decide it's a verb phrase when the phrase contains both a verb and a noun? Why is it not a noun phrase? I've been trying to learn this for a month and I'm still lost.

Well, you said that at 8.35 that "everything" is a noun, so I am confused about that word being used as a noun. If my memory serves me correctly, "everything" is a pronoun. However, while drawing parse trees I'm not sure if you are supposed to use different terminology. Therefore, can you please explain why?

So it really is my first time of knowing about complementizers¿ and I have studied on it a bit and according to my understanding, (correct me if I'm wrong, English is not my mother tongue language 😅) complementizers are different to auxiliary verbs. So, I would love it if you could enlighten me on how to recognize auxiliary verbs in doing syntax tree. :) Thanks in advance 😊
