    I love chopping just like any other American but my god that is one sexy semi!!!!!!!
    If the straight pipes aren’t enough for you then just check out those floatation tires! That’s awesome. See those in oil fields but haven’t seen them on a tractor semi before.

    The choppers are always cool but man that is one nice hauling rig. I really like the color scheme and it looks like it works well. Is that 29 tons weighed, or off the chopper HarvestLab? I wouldn't think a trailer that length could possibly hold that much, but I realize it is a really tall trailer. Nice rig.
    In my opinion, those floater tires are the only way to go on one of those trucks and even the trailers. Custom guy who hauled manure for us for a few years ran a vintage Kay-Dub with the ol' Detroit 2-cycle and a 5k gallon tank on those same wheels and tires, and it made an enormous difference for him in these hills. (And you could here that Detroit for a mile+ away!) And a custom chopping crew ran a pair of semis with Meyer Boss trailers with those tires all the way around, and it was amazing to see how well they could get around vs dual truck tires.
    Keep up the good work.

    I have a custom harvester neighbor. They use Claas choppers. They run 6 with 3 in each field. I think they are 950 hp v12 Mercedes. They run about 10-12 semis in each field. I have not seen a Bobtail truck around here in more than 10 year because the labor it to much to use a small truck.

  • @jbmbanter

    Seems like there would be a lot of compaction with the trucks making numerous passes up and down the field? Maybe this is OK? I do see that there are flotation type tires on the rear tandems on the tractors/trucks.

    • @FarmingFixingFabricating
      @FarmingFixingFabricating  5 років тому +2

      I agree but can't imagine how many bags we would need. That's a lot of plastic to throw away and it's a lot of gravel that would be going through the mixer.

    • @captaindee6130
      @captaindee6130 4 роки тому

      I'm not convinced that bags are necessarily better than bunkers. We do both. They each have advantages and disadvantages.
      We alway hire the Ag-Bag brand bagger, and we're usually satisfied with the results, but rarely amazed. I can't stand to read articles from the Ag-Bag brand sales guys in prominent national publications: they're so heavily biased, comparing best-case bag scenarios to what sounds like worst-case bunker scenarios, which not only isn't a fair comparison, but is actually a worthless comparison. I strongly doubt their dry matter recovery claims, for one simple reason: the independent studies I've seen always show higher losses than they claim, with some occasional extreme losses. And when they start talking about sealed bags eliminating storage losses, forget it: fermentation requires energy, which is derived from the stored plant matter, and no system can escape this basic reality. I just don't trust their info when they start talking up impossibilities.
      We've had significant mold issues in bags even with really good inoculants in situations where silage was a little dry, due to poor packing along the top and upper sides in the bag, and while it can happen in a bunker too, at least it's easier to control the packing.
      Bags are easier going in -- but the east coast is mostly temperate, meaning we get significant rain at times, and feeding out of them on dirt makes an awful muddy mess, especially in the winter. Our neighbors bag everything and their feed yard is a frickin' swamp about 4-5 months of the year (and you can barely see paint on the loader tractors for all the mud). Feed-out of a concrete-floored bunker, on the other hand, is always clean, rain or shine, with no chance of picking up mud. Or gravel, as Andy mentioned, which you'd have to use to combat mud, and which is an absolute pain to load off of -- we've done it, and I absolutely hated it. Like he said, we got gravel in the feed, no matter how careful we were.
      They have a really nice looking bunker setup, and it looks like they manage it well. In their scenario I think bags would be a step in the wrong direction.
      That being said, bags do have a few advantages. It's possible to easily segregate feeds or even fields, and because of this they make for a very flexible feeding system. And bags pack and seal simultaneously which would greatly minimize oxidation during harvest vs a bunker, as well as eliminating an awful lot of hard labor to cover bunkers.
      I think it's a matter of a farm's typical climate and setup. I have friends in western Kansas that get excited over a heavy mist, and bagging on plain dirt probably works for them. I'd want a huge asphalt pad with concrete aprons to bag all of ours -- and that would probably be more expensive than using bunkers exclusively.
      A well-managed bunker can be a great way of storing feed. A well-managed bag can also be a great way. That's the catch: *well managed*. Poor management can ruin either way equally well.

    why is silage used instead of conventional hay?

    • @FarmingFixingFabricating
      @FarmingFixingFabricating  5 років тому

      Haylage is a easier way to put up feed

    • @TheBronco67
      @TheBronco67 5 років тому

      @@FarmingFixingFabricating Is that easier for dairy feeding then say a roll of hay? I did some reading and everything says silage is fermented hay. I'm from Montana and biggest thing you don't want is your hay fermenting. I see they do this type operation a lot in europe as well, Oh well that's a sharp looking new trailer you have there and really liked the traction tires you had on your semi tractor.
