Emma is an ethical queen! Instead of using her platform with affiliate codes to encourage people to buy, buy, buy, she’s encouraging better shopping behavior! This was such a welcome reminder for me personally, and I’m sure for others too :)
Yess and her style is very classic and wearable. It's not about everchanging trends but about building a nice wardrobe over time. Does not produce that anxiety of having to buy constantly to keep up with the trends that will become obsolete and unwearable next season.
Emma has earned my respect . An influencer of her stature will surely make a dent in the fast fashion Industry to improve working conditions and also source /utilize more sustainable fabrics . We need more such voices ❤️.
You can't do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all you can do. It needs all of us doing a little, not a handful of us doing it perfectly 😁
I'm gradually learning that before making any purchase, I ask myself, "Do I really need this? Will I get use out of it? Do I already own something that resembles this?" These questions save me from making unnecessary purchases. In fact, I didnt buy anything this past Black Friday, except groceries 🙌🏽
I have had a "no buy" year (I have a lot of unworn clothes) and next year is going to be "low buy". My style is Scandinavian minimalistic (I am Danish). Second hand is new to me, but for sure something I'm going use. I have always loved good quality, but found in later years that brands I used to find high quality really wasn't any more. And also I would love if there was some transparency in sustainability, a lot brands claim they are but, oh no they are not. Would love a "tag" like when I buy a ecological apple it has a tag... Loved your video, don't think I have made such a long comment before 💗
I would love to hear from you about how this journey has impacted you? Like we all know that it’s better for the environment to be more sustainable in our purchases, but I don’t think enough is being said about how it impacts us the consumers! I live in a society where the herd mentality of buying what’s new, trendy and expensive is very much the norm, and if you don’t you’re looked down upon! Crazy, I know! And I’m not falling for that trap but I do sometimes feel the pressure
To be honest I haven’t felt a single negative impact in terms of mental health. It’s actually had a positive impact. Buying less has meant less stress of having to fit everything into the storage we have but also I just feel much happier with the investments that I have made. I’m a consumer but I also work in this industry so the only negative for me has been a drop in earnings from not doing hauls and that kind of content, as it is a very lucrative form of content which embodies the ‘buy buy buy’ message. However this wouldn’t apply to anyone that doesn’t work in this industry and to be honest I think there can be an element getting greedy rather than being satisfied with what you can earn honestly and responsibly. I totally understand what you’re saying about herd mentality though. This is just something you have to separate yourself from and be proud to say things like “oh this? It’s second hand” and “yeh had this for years and I love it”. There’s so much more satisfaction in that than there is the reality “I’ve got all this new stuff but it’s wasted money that I’ll never see again”.
Yes, I really appreciated this discussion and reminders. We needed these encouragements and review. I am a 🌟list maker, too. It amazes me to find an old list and discovered that I have lived WELL without the clutter of ownership. I have a smaller closet now, and it is working better. I kept only the favorite/quality items, no matter how old, and I’m getting compliments!! You are our style consultant and always look so smart and stunning. When looking deeper, your look is simple and classic and sophisticated. Polished is the correct word. That’s a high goal to work toward !!
Normally on Black Friday I have my Zara basket full, ready to press buy when the reductions start but this year I bought a gorgeous preloved Ganni dress on EBay, a beautiful silk dress instead of a basket full of polyester!
Same, Emma. I also add clothes and shoes on my favourite list so I can go back to them after a month and I always ask myself if I still want to purchase them. Most often than not, I always remove things on that favourites list and give another month to the remaining items so I can be really sure that the things I’m purchasing are the things that will add value in my life. Great video! 🤎
In 2020, I really got into purchasing estate jewelry from local shops. I love brands like Monica Vinader and Missoma but came to realize they are not forever pieces that will last until I am 80 years old. I feel so much better about supporting small business as well, especially during this tumultuous time.
Thank you for promoting responsible consumerism. You have definitely made a difference with your viewers! Second-hand buying is also fun because when that rare treasure one is looking for pops up, it is super exciting and rewarding.
Shopping more responsible is so important and to anyone reading this, I hope you’re feeling well and having a lovely day! If you ever need a chat in these weird times, my dms are always open!! Stay safe and remember to keep smiling, lots of love a small youtuber trying to spread positivity ❤️❤️
Great video Emma, this year has really made me rethink my shopping. A change of job has also meant I work from home and I realised the other day I hardly ever wear shoes now, my wellies are worn daily to walk the dogs, my food shop is delivered because the nearest supermarket is over 30 minutes away so I don’t need much!
I really appreciate videos like this as I am trying my best to only buy good quality and items I actually need. I felt totally bombarded during black Friday by influencers who are promoting fast fashion. It’s refreshing to have videos like this :) xx
I would love to shop at Vestiaire. But Canadian duties are always so obnoxiously expensive and it almost always ends up being the same price or more. :(
Check Retyche - it's a vintage and pre-loved designer online shop based in Canada. They don't have as many stuff as Vestiaire but they have really nice items.
Thank you for speaking up about this. I have a lot I want to say on the subject that I've learned through my life long love of fashion. I started working in retail in the early 90's and studied fashion merchandising, not ever imagining it would turn into what it is today. I just lived as an average consumer who was raised purchasing from 2nd hand shops and the mall. I miss the quality of anything made before the very early 2000's. Buying and selling on Ebay since 2002 has been one way of supporting my clothes addiction. As a list writer and a bit of a clothes hoarder it gets overwhelming wanting everything I find from a particular brand and era. I do enjoy the excitement of finding something I had regretted donating and I would buy again. That is much more satisfying than shopping at the mall for me. Thank you for letting me share. Always sending you positive vibes and well wishes xo
Really love this sustainable attitude now when I was young having one best dress and even sewing it is not far from my past loving that you are all trying hard for the planet .
I love these kinds of videos from you, Emma. Your delivery is so smart and approachable. I remember years ago, one of my profs was obsessed with a book called The Checklist Manifesto, sounds like you and Debs might also like it.
Silent watcher 🙋🏻♀️ thank you for making these videos. I’ve been watching since before you started this journey and have found it so helpful and interesting😊 I think you do a great job of setting an example and encouraging us to make better choices without them coming across as extreme/ judgemental. I think it helps people that maybe haven’t embarked on this journey yet to not feel totally alienated or like they have to start a new minimalist +100% ethical wardrobe tomorrow.
+ I feel like if you make content around clothes for a living ( with all the expectation of consumption and variety that comes with said job) and still make some better choices, then people like me that truly don’t need to worry about whether or not they’ve been seen in an outfit before can go even further and finally shed that silly societal pressure of having ‘new’ stuff all of the time 🖤😎
Im loving this transition from super shopper to a more considered, thoughtful and careful consumer. More influencers should take this lead. Im not watching any more hauls, the time of the HAUL IS OVER! For me anyway xx Thanks Emma
Thank you Kelly. The funny thing is that this video will probably be one of my lowest viewed videos and if it were a haul (not that I make those any more) it would be one of my highest. Unfortunately hauls are still the most popular videos from fashion creators and until viewers stop watching and requesting those, a lot of creators will continue to make them 😕
Emma i looove your style!I get the aesthetic pleasure about watching your outfits!:))Can you please do a video about: 1- styling berets and beanies in winter 2- jewelry collection 3-scarf collection
Definitely would love to see more of these type of videos. I love listening to Talking Tastebuds which have a lot of guest taking about sustainable fashion/ impact of fast fashion and many other sustainable issues x
this was so insanely helpful, i’ve been trying to search my favourite vloggers YT pages for this kind of insightful information, but there hasn’t been any! thank you so much for taking the time to share your personal experience and give such practical tips. this is one mine & my husbands 2021 goal, to shop more consciously and sustainably. this was so helpful! thank you thank you x
I am working hard at being better too and not just impulse buying. I am not a luxury shopper by any means but do try and incorporate better quality items at a mid price point. I am also trying to 'shop my wardrobe' more and when I see a style or things I like see if I have anything close to it. Like you said it isn't easy and it a learning curve which takes time but I have noticed since buying better and thinking about things more I am happier with what I have. Much love and thank you! X
I downloaded the good on you app a while ago, and I think it’s hilarious that the H&M group is doing better to become more ethical and sustainable than everlane.
I loved this video!! Putting practicality in the same conversation as building a wardrobe I something I don’t see on most platforms and it feels refreshing to come to your channel and see perspectives like this. I love your content!!!
My mum had a saying "buy well buy once" which I've tried to stick to... Tried being the operative word! 😉 Also, she often referred to clothes as "earning their keep" in the wardrobe. Similar to the price per wear...
I was JUST speaking today with a friend about wanting to learn more about this very topic! What a crazy coincidence! I’m so grateful for the information you provided with regard to resources and where to start with learning more. I want very much to change my mindset when it comes to purchasing in general, but especially clothing. Definitely keep this conversation going! Please!
Some great tips and resources mentioned that I wasn’t aware of so will add to my list of things to look into going forward. None of us are perfect but if we all do a small part in making a change it does make a difference. I think ultimately the more store closures that are happening consumerism is already changing in a way. I know in your particular line of work it must be very challenging but love the enthusiasm and commitment you’re making to move in this direction and to also help educate others (ourselves) on this sometimes controversial topic 🙏🏼🌎.
Recently followed you on IG and now I'm binge-watching your videos. Love your taste, your accent, your sense of humor, your honest opinion, the way you shop and much more! xxx
You inspired me to buy less but high quality things. I've invested a lot more in timeless items. Totem scarf, cashmere sweater and high quality wool coats (I collect almost long coats😆 but I love them all). I learned a lot from you about materials and which ones are valuable and what to look out for. so thank you for that 😆 Buy less, wear more.
I too am a collector of coats but they bring me so much joy and I try (in normal times) to wear all of them as much as possible. When they no longer bring me joy then can go on to the next person to bring them some joy. Keeping things in good condition and looking after them is so important so they can remain in their circle of life 🙌🏼
@@EmmaHill absolutely. I try to resell items that needs a new lover. But I also try to buy smarter. Thank you so much for promoting conscious shopping. I try to buy less and less fast fashion and rather invest in quality. And to think of second hand more in both directions. So thank you very much for making videos like this and inspiring us to think more about these things. I am also a huge fan of restore shoes and invest in quality cleaner, conditioner, brushes etc. Because I love the idea of thinking about that every item has its story. When I wore it, what I did, where I went for holiday with it etc. And I try to maintain every item as much as I can. VeTiVeR is a great Inspiration for restoring shoes. Love from Germany.
I turned 30 this year and I feel like my wardrobe is need of a major style overhaul, but my goal is to do it in a more thoughtful and considered way - both for the sake of the environment and my wallet. Videos like this help so much!! (Plus I love your style. I get so much inspiration from you all around!)
I loved this...especially your last tip...simple, practical and well said ❤️ I think you have so much more to share from your personal journey as a consumer that I cannot wait to hear from you
Emma, please do more videos like this! Love your style and journey - it’s so inspirational. I’m on a similar route, trying to modify my shopping habits to be conscious and more „sustainable“, learning something new bit by bit. Can’t wait for more content like this.
This is maybe one of your best videos. Thank you very much. I love you and your account because you are a responsible influencer and we can learn a lot not only about style & fashion but about the real important things. Thank you!
Yes I’m afraid Everlane are nothing like what they have claimed to be which is why I stopped working with them/buying from them last year. They did some pretty shady stuff at the start of the pandemic with regards to their staff as well 😕 Sadly, ‘greenwashing’ is their area of expertise. I think it’s great if a brand is transparent, even if they’re not ethical or sustainable because at least the info is laid out for the consumer to see and measure changes, albeit with a lot of reading through their reports 🙈 But Everlane marketed themselves to be transparent with their clever marketing techniques which definitely appealed to a lot of people. Myself included. I was so sucked in by Everlane because they sold us the dream, guilt free shopping 😕
Nice to hear someone say think before you shop because most of UA-camrs are saying buy this and that etc. I will definitely download the app too. Great video love anything about sustainability
I have been obsessed with eBay ever since you made one of your first videos on second hand buying. I spent most of my twenties buying without consideration and it makes me sick to know how much money I wasted in the process. I still fall into the trap occasionally and order a bunch of items from places like Zara or H&M but this is usually followed by instant regret and I end of sending most (if not all) of it back. Anyway, I appreciate these videos and your honest portrayal because we’re all learning and it’s a tough habit to beat when you’ve been shopping a certain way your entire life.
Oh gosh yes, the amount of money I wasted over the years makes me feel sick. When I think back to the days where I used to order huge bags full of Missguided, boohoo and Asos on a WEEKLY basis I just wish I could go back and shake myself 🤦🏼♀️
Been a follower for a while and have been on a similar sustainable fashion journey timeline to yours coincidentally. Just popping in the comments to say I've been enjoying your content more and more over the years as I see the conscious effort you make to improve your impact and leverage your influence to help spread the word! Keep it up and looking forward to more content in this vein :)
There are already plenty of comments so this may be redundant. But I really enjoy fashion content creators who buy second so much more. It feels like it takes more creativity to be able to successfully articulate a style. In a day and age where high fashion is tumbling down to the rabbit hole of fast fashion*eh hem, vuitton*... being mindful of your consumption is so so so important. More of this type of content is a certainly an outlier in the most positive and exciting way 😊
I totally get it 😆 .. I love a good to-do list... I have many many live lists around the house and at work and online... I keep re-writing them, updating, editing... I cannot go without them anymore, as they help me to get much more things done... and keep me very organized AND efficient... and yes, I put clothes (and other stuff) on my to-do lists 😐 I hate to admit
I have loved seeing how your shopping habits have changed and always enjoy these type of videos from you. I actually made my first #secondhandbutgrand eBay purchase this week and it was exhilarating winning something I had given a lot of thought to. I saved £105 off the retail price and felt good that i had given an unloved bag which was in perfect condition a new home! Thank you for inspiring me to shop more sustainably 💗
Loved this video Emma. So much to learn and you gave really good insight on how to start being a more responsible consumer. Looking forward to more of these kind of videos. A lot of the high sub influencers are plugging products all the time and at the same time doing ‘wardrobe clear out videos’!! You are genuine and are showing your growth as a consumer which is admirable and shows a lot of strength and integrity which makes you shine above the rest.
"Perfect is the enemy of good". Thank you for doing your part on your platform. It's awesome for someone like you to speak up about responsible consumerism. Will be tuning in for more of this :)
Thanks Emma! I believe this is my first post on your channel, because i want to show my appreciation for your commitment to this journey, especially as it involves forgoing a lucrative income stream. What's even more commendable and which really demonstrates your integrity is your consistent treatment of Everlane, because the income from touting Everlane's current autumn/winter collection is obviously enough for some UA-camrs who previously professed their support for Black Lives Matter and ethical fashion to convince themselves that a few months is all it takes for Everlane to reform their longstanding practices.
I would love to hear about your ethical / sustainable shopping journey, what/if any areas you still struggle in shopping ethically, favourite brands, etc!
I'd love other videos like this! I also started buying less and searching for a more sustainable alternative so any reccomendation is welcome! Thankyou Emma!
Thank you Emma for your wonderful tips and videos, I am an anxiety sufferer and this year has been challenging at least, and your videos have made me feel excited again for dressing up and shopping for pieces that go together! I love your videos and your personality! And your wonderful dogs!
Well done you. I am sick of black Friday over the last 3 weeks. Yes I did buy 2 cashmere jumpers and a wool coat but they were on my list anyway. I didn't buy anything that a certain u tube person had been pushing down my neck every day for the past month. I think she has got to go, I don't believe a single word that comes out of her mouth any more. Thank you for opening my eyes. Xx
I think UA-cam and anyone that works in this social media/“influencer” industry have certain decisions to make, and I’m not going to lie it is tricky. On the one hand we’ve now got a whole range of women (and a few men) who have created their own self-run successful businesses which has to be applauded I think. But on the other hand the rise of this industry has definitely had an impact on consumerism. The entire industry is based on consumerism, if people don’t buy then we don’t earn money. This goes for affiliate links and paid partnerships with brands. There’s always going to be an audience for all the different types of creators out there, whether they be the haul creators, the diy’ers, sustainable creators etc etc. But it’s up to everyone to tailor their follow lists to best suit themselves. I think it can be easy to blame influencers for compulsive consumption, especially much younger audiences that are more impressionable, but I also think that we all (every consumer) need to take accountability for our actions. If we realise we’re spending too much because we’re watching too many hauls then we need to stop watching them. The irony is that this video will probably be one of my lowest viewed, but if I did a haul it would be one of my highest viewed. People still want hauls, and as long as they’re gaining high views and generating high affiliate earnings some UA-camrs will continue to make them. I think there’s a responsibility that perhaps some UA-camrs haven’t realised they have but there’s also responsibility with all consumers. I think as the years roll by more and more creators will start to take a more responsible approach, or at least I’d like to hope that’s how it will go 🤞🏼
I decided at the beginning of last year that i would buy less and more consciously. And that gave me a lot of freedom. I spent the whole year only buying the needed working items. Twopair of trousers and 3 blouses. And this year I bought a second hand bag from a luxury retailer. My very first real high quality leather bag.. And when I saw it online I thought about the #secondhandbutgrand Line and knew I made a good purchase. Brand new, no scuffs, with dustbag.. What a thrill!!! Please continue to educate us.. Thank you Emma! Stay safe! 😊❤️
@@EmmaHill I wanted to share on instagram with your hastag!!! 😬😬 But I've been post poned.. All that I can say it's.. Italian.. Nothing too fancy.. But I just love that kind of shape.. Classic shapes..
Yes absolutely use your platform to inform on better consumption. I did shop in this black friday for items on my wishlist and it felt so good to be able to save some money on better quality items and ethical brands. This black friday felt different. More awareness of thoughtful buying and ethical brands saying, actually black friday can call more people into sustainability.
Your approach is SO relatable! Loved this video, and I would love to see more recommendations and similar contents. This is the reinforcement we all need regarding fashion ❤️
First of all i am a huge fan. You’re my favorite UA-camr and you make me want to start a channel. The American Emily channel lol. I’d love to see your full wardrobe so I could compare it to mine. I i have altered my whole wardrobe within the last year and you have helped me hone in on what I really enjoy wearing. I’m 31 and love the laid back chic minimal neutral vibe. Low key but so classic and elegant. I am in the process of reorganizing, minimizing, and upgrading. Eventually I want to replace w designer but haven’t yet but this is wonderful motivation. I look forward to your videos every week and I want to see more vlogs :)
I loved the buy better T-shirt comparison. I remember buying one simple grey T-shirt from Acne’s own outlet, and had it for ca 3 years before the first marks got visible. (I still have it in my wardrobe). It made me stop shopping cheap shirts that I know will last for 6 months or less.
Yes please! More videos like this, more on your sustainable, ethical evolution! You have helped me personally to second hand shop (had gotten away from this) and really think about/research my purchases (or lack thereof)! Going to educate myself more with some of the documentaries you mentioned (love a good docu) and the ‘Good on You’ app, Thank you Emma! 💕👍🏻
Faux leather is absolutely horrible for the environment. Those polyurethane leather items will never degrade and they will stay in landfills for thousand of years. Also, PU leather do not last. After few years of wears or even just storaging, the surface of the PU will start peeling off. People, please do educate yourself before buying any PU leather. It's not investment pieces and not eco-friendly.
Really appreciate the honest and earnest content, Emma. Appreciate your POV on sustainability and on how all of us out here in the world can SAVE our money. Don't hear that a lot from influencers. It's appreciated. Would love to see more like this!
This year has really made me rethink my shopping habits. I have, as you put it, stept away from the computer several times thinking ”do I really need this?”. Black Friday was the real test and this year I only bought things on my list 🤗. Last year I went banas with my card 😥. For 2021 I want to take the step into buying second hand so thank you for all the tips and I look forward to future videos.
Just placed a big order at an online Second Hand Store (it's called Carou btw). So excited for all the cashmere goodness to arrive!! I decided this year to buy all my clothes second hand and I've only slipped up once. So much easier than I thought it would be and it can make such a difference for the environment. :)
Yes I do think we need more videos like this because it is the right path toward conscious buying/buyer, sustainable fashion, quality over quantity, so yes Emma please do more videos like this, sharing personal/first hand experiences and sharing your knowledge about fashion and other things as well of course (books, apps, , lifestyle etc.). I always learn something new and what is most important it makes me rethink about my purchases and the way I will be buying in the future, also what I love is to do my own research before I decide what to buy. Thank you for sharing. 👍
Yes this was great to see Emma. I do love Vestiaire Collective but also finding brands like Ninety Percent has been great because though the items are more expensive the quality is incredible and they are sustainable which I love. I am definitely looking for a vintage Celine bag but I have been waiting for over a year because I want it to be right and the best price for me. Thanks so much for discussing this especially now Emma! 💓
Also, can we please discuss brands that were a breath of fresh air (at least to me) and sent emails saying “we are boycotting Black Friday”. I was so happy to find a couple of these messages from some of the brands/retailers I love, amongst the hundreds of sale emails I was constantly deleting. 1. I appreciate not having to ever think “oh, could I’ve gotten this cheaper if I waited?” 2. It feels like the pricing is fair as it is and they won’t be able to take down 40% or more and still make a profit 3. It feels like they stand for designers who sell through them 4. It will also reflect on the second hand market and pricing of the brands
I don’t have the budget for buying things off vestiere, but I’ve committed to buying at least 80% of my items second hand - either in charity shops (when safe) or on Vinted - Vinted is great for more high street brands / lower price point items which are still decent quality! I always select either new with tags or new without tags ☺️
I love these videos - it's how I came across your channel! I would love to shop more responsibly and any advice on how to do this is fantastic. Such a refreshing change from all the high street "haul" videos which encourage people to buy loads of cheap items they're hardly going to wear!
This is such a great video and advice everyone should hear! These tips are things my parents have always taught me even though I have been very guilty of impulse shopping. I will be watching the documentaries you suggested and I am already trying to look more into secondhand websites and reaaaallly trying to save a bit and buy something of much better quality than the popular high street retailers. For example I still do not own a classic black blazer!!! I want a classic fit and wool fabric black blazer!!!! So I’m waiting to find the one! 🥰 thanks Emma. Xoxo Alix
Loved this video and all your others of late (tbh). I think encouraging us viewers to be responsible with our shopping habits is such a good way to use your voice and platform especially compared to a lot of other influencers/content creators. Would love to hear more recommendations of podcasts, docs, books etc we should be reading! ❤️
Some 2thhand apps & webshops : VINTED DESIGNER VINTAGE VINTAGE UNITED TRIFTAMSTERDAM TWENTYSECONDVINTAGE VESTIAIRE COLLECTIVE MARKETPLACE E-BAY HETERODOXA But also "buy less and wear what you buy"
I am always grateful for this informative, sharing and conscious type of videos! Thank you Emma for the quality content you're producing, always a pleasure to watch and learn
An excellent excellent video and a wonderful message! Thanks for taking the time and the effort to bring some attention to such a critical topic amid this consumerism world we live in lately!
Great video and would love to hear more from you on how to be a more responsible consumer. You have totally changed how I shop as well. It is actually more fun to shop second hand because you never know what you will find. Keep up the good work Emma x
I'm not a minimalist, not by far, I just reduced the amount of items I was buying, cut out a lot of brands (not all) which I felt I could live without and started shopping second hand more. My visual wish lists help me decide what I really want and need 🙌🏼 It's a case of training yourself to think differently, and it takes time, or at least it did for me anyway ❤️
This is such an awesome video! "A Life Less Throwaway" is another fantastic book I'd recommend. The book explains in great detail the importance of buying less and buying high quality items that will last!
So appreciate you making this video Emma 🤩 You mention that you're not perfect and you're on a journey, but we all are! It's not a destination, but a journey 😁 Some of the zero waste influencers that pretended they were perfect are now making videos about how they worked around their "rubbish in a jar" posts and how the lifestyle almost ruined them 😒🥑🍵 I think a big thing to remember in all of this is we all have a certain level of privilege, those of us that can afford to do better need to try and do that ❤️ Also we were all taught to believe that fashion was this fun hobby that anyone could participate in, the real cost of all of that was deliberately hidden from us for as long as possible. We shouldn't beat ourselves up about that but once we're aware we should try and do better.
This was great - thanks so much for sharing! As you said, buying quality can mean that items last longer and therefore don’t need to be replaced as often....but in some cases, I’ve found you can’t assume a higher price point = higher quality. It would be so great to learn your thoughts on best quality brands per item/category. You mentioned that great app that can help with some of this, but it would be amazing to have a rundown of your favs - best tshirts or jeans, shoes, coats, even socks (eg do they hold shape, wash well, are lasting quality, have ethical & environmentally-considered manufacturing processes). Just a thought but hope it helps x
I loved this well timed and thoughtful video. Our email inboxes are busting with tempting titles this time of year. I think probably a lot of your viewers are on this sort of journey of “buy better, buy less” and a handful of accessible documentaries, podcasts, and book recommendations (with the EH seal of approval) can be quite impactful. 🤍
As an additional way I learned to extend the life of some of my clothes, is to donate them to homeless shelters. My friend pointed out that even the small things like socks can be just what someone would appreciate to help keep them warm, particularly during these cold months.
I loved this discussion, Emma. I’ve found your channel recently and really resonate with both your ethos and your style in general. Keep up the good work 👏🏼
Thank you for such an insightful video. It’s really great to see a honest approach to more sustainable consumption that has given me a lot to think about. This year I made a promise to myself to only buy anything in the Black Friday sales if it had been on my wish list for over a month and it has drastically reduced the number of items I purchased - only a small step but I’m determined to make it the first of many.
Thank you for this video, very helpful! I'm trying to be "more" fashionable and care more about how I look/wear etc. But also be environmentally conscious so this has been very helpful.
This may be one of my favorite videos of yours. I would really like to see more content like this. There’s a lot to be said about sustainability and fast fashion.
Hello Emma! Always a pleasure watching you. I have been a second hand shopper for a long time. I am in the USA so my preferred online shop is FASHIONPHILE. Have a great week! 🌈
Hi Emma yes please keep the sustainability content coming, it’s a really good reminder & it’s affirming when you give your tips! I also love lists & sometimes just pinning is at good as shopping. I’m watching from NZ & I really wish we had Arket & cos here. Keep up the good work.
Gradually learning as well.... Nowadays I give myself at least a week time to think it through, to search for second hand options... As I just finished 30 days of declutter and was able to get rid of +500 items from different areas I really went through my stuff and now I know what I own. For sure I don't need to buy one piece of clothing next year :D
Great video and I would love to hear more about your sustainable journey! It’s been interesting and inspiring to watch how you’ve delved more into the second-hand market. I’ve been shopping second-hand for some time but know it can be a little intimidating for some people. You have a couple of videos that are really instructive re: making second-hand purchases and showing how that process works which I’ve found particularly useful! Thanks for all your hard work in this area and for using your platform for a good purpose ❤️
Well done great tips! Resource recommendations are excellent. I too have been very conscious of where and how the clothes I consider buying. I've now gone into the beauty side, I'm finding the cosmetics are quite hard, the skincare products I've conquered.
Emma is an ethical queen! Instead of using her platform with affiliate codes to encourage people to buy, buy, buy, she’s encouraging better shopping behavior! This was such a welcome reminder for me personally, and I’m sure for others too :)
That is a such a lovely message, but honestly, I’m not an ethical queen 🙈 I have changed a lot of my bad habits but still could change more ❤️
Yess and her style is very classic and wearable.
Totally agree. My shopping behaviour is heavily influenced after one of her first videos on the topic. 👍👍🙏
You can't do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all you can do. It needs all of us doing a little, not a handful of us doing it perfectly 😁
My dad always says "it's only a bargain if you needed it before it was cheap", otherwise you just want it because it's cheap.
I'm gradually learning that before making any purchase, I ask myself, "Do I really need this? Will I get use out of it? Do I already own something that resembles this?" These questions save me from making unnecessary purchases. In fact, I didnt buy anything this past Black Friday, except groceries 🙌🏽
Yes some great tips ❤️
Yes... I really enjoyed this video. Buy less, buy better 👌🏽
@@EmmaHill very true, and good points. This video was very helpful, since I've discovered your Channel, I mainly shop second hand.
That sounds amazing! Ganni do such beautiful dresses so I'm sure you'll have that for years to come 🙌🏼
I've been trying to become a more responsible consumer for a while, it's difficult but I'm trying, videos like this really help x
Emma, you just speak directly my mind. Buy lesa, do the research, ask yourself if you really need the item. That's exactly my jam.
Thank you, I will take a look 👍
Yeah that’s a great one actually
Unfortunately hauls are still the most popular videos from fashion creators and until viewers stop watching and requesting those, a lot of creators will continue to make them 😕
Emma i looove your style!I get the aesthetic pleasure about watching your outfits!:))Can you please do a video about:
1- styling berets and beanies in winter
2- jewelry collection
3-scarf collection
Definitely would love to see more of these type of videos. I love listening to Talking Tastebuds which have a lot of guest taking about sustainable fashion/ impact of fast fashion and many other sustainable issues x
Finally someone who is not throwing discount codes at us :) thank you Emma for reminding me to think twice before clicking “buy”
this was so insanely helpful, i’ve been trying to search my favourite vloggers YT pages for this kind of insightful information, but there hasn’t been any! thank you so much for taking the time to share your personal experience and give such practical tips. this is one mine & my husbands 2021 goal, to shop more consciously and sustainably. this was so helpful! thank you thank you x
Thank you. ❤️
Thank you ❤️
My mum had a saying "buy well buy once" which I've tried to stick to... Tried being the operative word! 😉
Also, she often referred to clothes as "earning their keep" in the wardrobe.
I learned a lot from you about materials and which ones are valuable and what to look out for. so thank you for that 😆
Buy less, wear more.
Thank you!
I downloaded the app! I was shocked that Everlane isn’t doing as much as I would of expected! (Not good enough!) Thanks for the helpful tips! 💞
Thank you ❤️
There are already plenty of comments so this may be redundant.
Congrats on your new bag and I hope you enjoyed the process of buying second hand. There’s quite a sense of achievement that comes from it 🙌🏼
Thank you Emma this is the type of content I need during the black friday period! Can you do a sustainable/responsible gift guide?
Coming up next month 💚
Thank you Evelyn ❤️
I would love to hear about your ethical / sustainable shopping journey, what/if any areas you still struggle in shopping ethically, favourite brands, etc!
I'd love other videos like this! I also started buying less and searching for a more sustainable alternative so any reccomendation is welcome! Thankyou Emma!
Thank you Emma for your wonderful tips and videos, I am an anxiety sufferer and this year has been challenging at least, and your videos have made me feel excited again for dressing up and shopping for pieces that go together! I love your videos and your personality! And your wonderful dogs!
Vegan leather, definitely buy 2nd hand.. it takes about 300 to 500 years for decomposition, indeed very bad for our environment
I think as the years roll by more and more creators will start to take a more responsible approach, or at least I’d like to hope that’s how it will go 🤞🏼
Now tell me about these cashmere jumpers and this wool coat? 😍🙌🏼😘
And when I saw it online I thought about the #secondhandbutgrand
Line and knew I made a good purchase. Brand new, no scuffs, with dustbag.. What a thrill!!! Please continue to educate us.. Thank you Emma! Stay safe! 😊❤️
Well don’t leave me hanging, tell me which bag you bought 🙊😘😘
You can see my wardrobe in my recent wardrobe changeover video 👍🏼 that shows all areas of my autumn/winter wardrobe ❤️
I am so grateful for you and your videos in the midst of the most consumer insane year I’ve ever experienced!!
What an amazing human. I am proud of letting myself “influenced” by you. ❤️
Really enjoyed this video. I shop second hand on Ebay & Vestiaire. Havent bought anything in blackfriday/cybermonday ✊🏻
1. I appreciate not having to ever think “oh, could I’ve gotten this cheaper if I waited?”
2. It feels like the pricing is fair as it is and they won’t be able to take down 40% or more and still make a profit
3. It feels like they stand for designers who sell through them
Xoxo Alix
All your input regarding purchasing is making me a careful shopper and this video I’m seeing a year later.
Loved this video and all your others of late (tbh). I think encouraging us viewers to be responsible with our shopping habits is such a good way to use your voice and platform especially compared to a lot of other influencers/content creators. Would love to hear more recommendations of podcasts, docs, books etc we should be reading! ❤️
Absolutely love this video! I've been trying to do the same thing for a while now. Please keep creating content like this!

You're right, the thrill of finding something second hand that you have been searching for is the best. It may take a little longer but so worth it 😍
How has your transition been to a minimalist? How did you differentiate your wants an needs along with impulsive buying?
I'm not a minimalist, not by far, I just reduced the amount of items I was buying, cut out a lot of brands (not all) which I felt I could live without and started shopping second hand more.
My visual wish lists help me decide what I really want and need 🙌🏼 It's a case of training yourself to think differently, and it takes time, or at least it did for me anyway ❤️
I would LOVE to hear about how you curbed your shopping addiction❤️ love your journey and would like to start mine
This is such an awesome video! "A Life Less Throwaway" is another fantastic book I'd recommend. The book explains in great detail the importance of buying less and buying high quality items that will last!
Making a list is such a time save and money saver for sure!!! I am all about making a list 👌❤️
Big up the list makers club 📝😆🙌🏼😉😉
Most definitely, price does not equal quality. This suggestion is great, I’ll add it to the list 🙌🏼❤️
Yes absolutely!
Thank you, you too ❤️
Hi Emma yes please keep the sustainability content coming, it’s a really good reminder & it’s affirming when you give your tips! I also love lists & sometimes just pinning is at good as shopping. I’m watching from NZ & I really wish we had Arket & cos here. Keep up the good work.
Thank you ❤️
Gradually learning as well.... Nowadays I give myself at least a week time to think it through, to search for second hand options... As I just finished 30 days of declutter and was able to get rid of +500 items from different areas I really went through my stuff and now I know what I own. For sure I don't need to buy one piece of clothing next year :D
Thank you. I just made my first purchase on vestaire. This was a really informative and interesting video
Thank you, Emma. 🙏 Very sage advice, especially during the whole ‘cyber’ week mania. I love your style too - so chic. 👌 ❤️
