One of best movie scenes ever made, pure perfection.
I love this scene
Seasons pass, one great song showing his heartbreak. The sun does not shine. Finally the sun breaks...heartbreaks over.
What’s ironic, she did broke his heart twice. She did absolutely nothing to make it better.
Then one day she sees him at the shooting of the movie, she blows him off, strike 3. Then comes crawling back.
Yes, the Great Anna Scott, I would have dumped her too.
@@terrancethomas9792
It wasn't so much " dumping" but self- preservation!
Good yes but perfection?????
True 👍
Not only the pregnant woman and the breakup, but notice how the produce on sale changes from peaches to broccoli to apples to flowers as the seasons change (potatoes are there all year!), and the sly way the scene is choreographed, how he passes a big van to mask the fall into winter transition, then turns a corner and it's Christmas. Also Grant's demeanor changes as he first feels heartbroken, and eventually is more accepting by the next year. I love to ponder on the logistical organization that was required behind-the-scenes to pull off that scene. Those recurring people had to run around and change clothes, the baby had to behave, the snow machine had to be working, everyone had to hit their marks, hundreds of extras all had to be in the right place at the right time. One of my favorite scenes of all-time. Someone who was there should write a book about it.
Jim Owen - Also notice when guy's back fills screen at 1:09-1:10 - after that, the sun has come out, so maybe it was done in two parts with the guy covering the join? A brilliant feat of filming.
It was done with CGI by VFX studio Framestore -- their CEO, Sir William Sargent, was on BBC Business Live this morning (2018-03-15). He said "for me Notting Hill was a benchmark in terms of storytelling because nobody has any idea that the seasonal walk down Portobello Road is actually a triumph of visual effects."
Interestly he said there was a woman who walked alongside Hugh Grant who got increasingly visibly pregnant and at the end was holding the baby but I cannot see her walking in the clip.
Maybe it was a reflection of his feelings getting colder by the minute as he passes people but strangers..emphasising his being alone..everybody else being alive, even friction, pregnant, happy, busy but poor young Mr Thacker realises that he is but just one item on Life's smorgasbord as he is left behind for a moment to regurgitate consequences with the scene as a back drop. of course because this is a nice film he does get to back
♫ What do I do when my love is away?
Does it worry you to be alone?
How do I feel by the end of the day?
Are you sad because you're on your own?
No, I get by with a little help from my friends ♫
and sweetly he did. A reminder that catalysts are everywhere and truly the best asset one can have in life is each other....
♫ Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends ♫
He might have exaggerated, or maybe just got confused. I could only find the pregnant woman at 0:03 and then again at 1:26 with the baby already born...
One of my favourite scenes in the movie. It's done so brilliantly.
I want to be this cool when i'm sad
Oooo
😂😂😂😂
Yup
DEFINITELY
The best scene ever!
absolutely yeah!
Couldn’t agree more. Captures the time passing and mood perfectly.
I completely agree with you
Sure of It!!
0:03 pregnant woman
summer / dry season
0:10 - his happy sister w/ her bf
0:20 rainy season start
0:34 windy season / fall
0:40 winter season
Christmas time
1:16 his sister's break up w/ her bf
1:25 the pregnant woman on 0:03 has a child
Spring time
.
It's an all year round situation in this beautiful scene.
.
His sister's heart break on a time of flowers bloom followed by a newly born child is a mind boggling sequence.
He wore the same suit for a year... That's quality material.
Easy Eagle
Funny 😂😂😂😂😂
That can also represent that he hasn’t changed, that he still has feelings for Anna
RIP Bill Withers. This song was the soundtrack to the many breakups in our lives.
Hi. I am from india. Just heard this yesterday and instantly fell in love with it. Melody , the music is so so so good.
I'm always impressed how they get the quality of light to change so convincingly. From the strong, bright summer sun where colours are saturated, to the grey, muffled light of a snowy winter day. Amazing.
It wasn't shot in 1 day but impressive nonetheless.
@@spateri728 Interesting. I reckon up to 0:19 and from 1:09 onwards were filmed in summer and the bit in the middle was filmed in winter to get the light right. Have you any more info?
@@EASYTIGER10 No I've just seen how they do this seamless shots. It's when the camera pans past the posts or a person that takes up the frame too to bottom.
To be fair after living in London this could be filmed in one day with their weather although I'm sure it was over a few days. It doesn't snow that much in London either so it would have been a snow machine for sure. You can get seasonal fruit and vegetables all year round there as well, not the nicest but it all comes in from Northern Africa and Spain etc. during the colder months when they can't grow it there.
@@EASYTIGER10 were film the same month, but shot in different days to get a sunny day and then a cloudy one to match better the light effects while he's walking
@@EASYTIGER10 I think it's just filters, with grey filters, fans (wind machines) and snow machines you can make it look like winter.
if you have already watched this movie you can understand this scene absolutely!
Yes sir I do but I believe the scene is shot in a such a beautiful way it's self explanatory!!
You look geh...
One of my favourite scenes in the movie. I love the concept of him walking through the seasons, to show that it has been a year. Not just the weather, the pregnant lady and the break-up. But everything else in the scene. What items are on the stalls. And the music is brilliant. Love this scene.
Thanks for been a good fan feel free to write me
I watched this movie on netflix last night after ..oh god.... some years... and this scene in particular is poetry in motion in its true sense. How effortlessly it transitions from season to season and the locals and the whole environment perfectly captures its essence … Marvellous.
What country is your Netflix on?
I watch more than 10times both in movie and netflix
Hugh Grant is so gergous in this scene.
Not just the best scene in the movie but one of the all time best scenes in any movie. Quintessentially British
An absolutely iconic and fantastic movie scene. I love this movie.
"I may have told a few people down the pub"
i love this can watch this over over and over again
+MrRaypat It's the song.
Me too
Si ma non ti allargare
Music and love. This is real magic.
Me too ❤️
It is not important the nationality, language, race, social stratum o beauty. All of us, have the same heart to feel sore and some time hapiness.
How ever long and how ever difficult it was to create this scene, it was worth it. Absolute perfection!!
Stumbled onto this scene being filmed in Notting Hill one Bank Holiday Monday. It was a really hot day too and very strange to see one of the side streets covered in fake snow. Very cool to see Hugh Grant and took lots of photos as i also happened to have my camera with me too :)
My favorite movie...
There are so many emotions in this scene. I miss the love that makes me dizzy.
I loved how Mindy Kaling revisited this scene in Four Weddings and a funeral!!
Sometime in the early 2000s, I was in my teens, absolutely addicted to TV, and watched "Notting Hill" for the first time. This movie introduced me to "Ain't No Sunshine" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart". I am forever grateful for that.
❤Hugh Grant
He looks absolutely divine 🤣🤣.
i watch this scene every morning
Manh he must be hella depressed to go without changing his clothes for sooo many seasons.
Hafsa XVI
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love that comment about not changing clothes!!!👍😄
Notice how the pregnant lady at the beginning got her baby by the end of the scene. Perfect! I was blown away watching this scene
Hey it's Fazex Thanks for your love and support,am really glad you watched and enjoyed my videos here on UA-cam so feel free to write me
I love this scene!
Hugh Grant just so perfect. I love him
@@hughgrant8588 is that you really hugh grant ? Oh my god ❤️❤️❤️
This is one of the cleverest devices to show the passage of time I’ve ever seen. Maybe the cleverest. I Absolutely love it. Who in the heck directed this film?????
This whole song was so beautifully orchestrated. Just amazing what they have achieved in less than 2 freaking minutes! In 2 minutes months and seasons have passed on, and the lives have changed of the people in the scenes.
Just the time passing by.
It rips my heart every time
They should have a behind-the-scene clip on how they put this amazing scene together.
It is just outstanding.
if my life was going to be perfect, i would be in this scene right now. The expectation of a heart that cannot turn away despite rejection, injuries and disappointment. Only if my life was going to be perfect...
Bill Whiters...
This scene is the optime of the song.
This exactly what waiting for death feels like
RIP, Bill.
Ain't no sunshine when you're gone.....
Any time you feel down... this, and a few other scenes guaranteed to chase the blues away (sniff, sniff)
2018?
One of my favorite scenes ever
Genial!!
One of the most iconic scene in the film industry.
Ain't no neurotic ranting while she's gone either...
0:01 I can't with this guy 😂😂😂
J'adore ce film! Hugh et Julia sont fantastiques
this gives me so much nostalgia
This is the only song which gives me happiness when iam high. 😄
God😭 the sequence that made me fall in love towards UK❤️ what perfection!
I have seen Notting Hill many times. And this scene even more often because it is a pure masterpiece - a new, unique way of telling the viewer that a year has passed - and with so many details that you only realize little by little.
For example, I had never noticed before that the pregnant woman at the beginning of the scene is holding her child in her arms at the end. How could I have missed that?
2018 any one still listening ? :)
Listening here in the last legs of 2019! Woot!
Absolutely brilliantly executed shot! ♥️
I love this scene from nothing Hill movie 📽️ with Hugh grant and Julia Roberts.....
This montage is superb! Both technique and emotional.
One of the best rom com of all times.
It's true love as u like choco lawa after booze or dinner...hit Like this for me...
This movie and the previous 'Sliding Doors' launched London as capital of socalled 'Cool Britannia' in the mid of 90s. Whoever I know went there during that period got an opportunity to change his life. Totally different from Brexit's time...
the good 1999 2000s
Hugh grant is so charismatic with this music
Ça rappelle Vertigo, la scène du baiser.
Yes to the song and yes to the movie!

One of my favourite movie 😇
RIP Bill Withers.
love the transition between season.
I remember when the film came out a lot of film critics hated this scene and song choice.
Tells you how many of these movie experts are out of touch with moviegoers.
Love this song and the best romantic comedy movie

See 0:09 to get the whole picture.
Never a more perfect use of this song
Beautiful scene. But apparently filmed in what must be the whitest area of Notting Hill, or indeed anywhere.
Interesting. I hadn't even noticed.
