You do not need a great film to sell to Netflix and no need to do a festival screening. The film just needs to satisfy genre expectations and have professional production values.
If you have a good short film and considering it meets all of Netflix’s requirements like camera, lens etc. How do you get in contact?
@@MidhunNotFound you may need a sales agent. I have never approached them directly. I wasn't aware that they accepted shorts.
What if you have the idea of the film. Like it’s your head how do you pitch it to them?
@@leakedstudiosghana You dont. Waist of time. They will not entertain such idea. Maybe only to superstars directors such as scoresse for Irishman. They go ok here is the money, go do your thing. Because they know his work. For you or anyone else, dont even bother.

Great information. Regarding Sales Agents, they usually need a name to be able to sell the film. Also, research the Sales Agent, there are some sleazy characters out there who will sell your film for less to make their commission and get it off their plate. My understanding is Netflix takes a very long time to pay you, like two years before you get the first check.
There are bad actors in any industry, our job as filmmakers is to share information so that we are avoiding those people as much as possible. Netflix pays out every quarter over the life of the term. If you want the cash upfront there are film finance companies who will front that money to you and collect from Netflix (they charge interest and fees to make money from the deal)

When you explain the down side of a sales agent is the commission, you should explain what the typical commission is, obviously 5-10% is ok and 50% is not.

For a sales agent it's 15-25%. If they are not putting up an advance, it should be closer to 15%. If they are it will be higher.

Yes, if you don't need a sales agent to help finance your film, wait until you get selected. If you get selected to a major festival my advice is to attach a sales agent between the time you are selected and your premiere, so that they are attached and can build up interest in the lead up to your premiere and hopefully sell it immediately before or after

Yeah, these are great steps, but he's missing a lot. Like, a LOT a lot. How do you find the agent. What type? Should the movie be completed and shot?
You can find sales agents and distributors in many ways: referrals, online, markets. You can sell when it's completed/shot or during financing. I've done both. I don't think there's anything missing here
What about just selling a script outright?

That was so helpful thank you! How does a first or second time filmmaker get in touch with a local distributor or sales agent. I have reached out to many in the US but most do not accept unsolicited emails.
If your pitch is good enough they will reply. Otherwise, team up with a producer who has contacts

question: did you have to provide Netflix with a script clearance report before they agreed to buy the film?
No but if something like this is required you can always go and get it once you know it's required.

I’m not sure who are the professional hubs that are going to be there. Would you suggest me to contact sale agents or distributors for meeting? My film is complete
Yes contact as many as you can before the festival to set up meetings. Send them a trailer to your film and if they ask to see it, send them a screener

The key with finding a 'good'/reputable sales agent is to look at which films they've represented, then you reach out to the filmmakers and ask about their experience working with them.

Debut film Plague via a sales agent after it was completed, US only, 3 year term. Fourth film Paper Champions via a local distributor, Aus/NZ only, 3-year term. Still chasing that worldwide original :)
