- Why Yamaha Drums? Well, let me break it down in this video. I'll talk about the build, reliability and sound, plus I'll play a little funk for ya. If you're also considering a switch to Yamaha drums, then be sure to watch this video! I'll share with you why I made the switch and how I'm enjoying the new drums.
The green kit pictured in the thumbnail I borrowed for a photoshoot. The Smoke Sunburst in the video is my personal kit.

Rikki, you are absolutely the reason I started playing drums when I was 13 yrs old. Nothing but a good time was just released, and I LOVED those DW drums. I've lusted after, but never owned a DW kit. I ended up with a Yamaha kit recently, and I am 100% blown away by the quality and sound! Now you're with Yamaha! Love it!! Keep kicking ass Rikki!!
Hey I have a question! How did you first try out the drums? I’m looking into trying the drums, but I don’t want to own a drum kit or spend a lot of money. Do you have any suggestions?
1988 tampa fl my brother bought me tickets to see poison for my birthday, my first concert and I was blown away, been a fan ever since
Love how precise you are with this, even though 99% of your audience wouldn't notice or care. Mark of a professional!
Haha was thinking the same thing. Only fellow drum geeks appreciate this.

Off topic but ... I understand you are a vegan or a vegetarian .. I'd like to be able to do that ... I live alone and cook for myself ... and blah x 3 ... is there a book or something man ..?

@@ThePoisonDrummer No eggs or cheese ..? I'd like to try for 1 month but I gotta have a menu plan to pull it off ... Thx.
Great explanation of what you need in a pro situation.
Having delays because of gear is the worst.
I look forward to hearing this line very soon!
Again another very interesting video! So cool that you share how the music is made. Thank you for keeping Rock Alive.
This is so exciting, the kit sounds awesome and the bass coming from the kick sits well with the rest of the kit! Thanks for keeping Rock alive and can’t wait for more Drum content 😈🤙 Happy New Year!!!
Love it. Sounds awesome. Can’t wait. Thanks 🤘👍
Good stuff ! Good luck with the new kit !
thanks for focusing on the practical aspects of load in, sound check, and mics
Love this Rikki !! Can’t wait to see the video break down on the pedal!!
Like you, I am also a drummer who loves to play songs
You nailed it right there !!!
Cheers Rikki!!
Every drummer loves to change some times always evolving and these drums are so gorgeous yamaha hit it perfect with these
Love your videos...especially the tour videos! I have a Gretsch kit I bought when I was 17. Got it from Drum HQ in St. Louis (RIP). That was 1984 I think and they are still in great shape. Harvey Mason used them in a clinic. After watching your video, I think I may need to sell them and get some Yamaha gear. Looks like great stuff!
Your a blessing brother and thank for the insight on the drums
It looks and sounds fantastic!!! I love your videos on drum stuff. I geek out on that too. Rock on Rikki!!
this kit is gorgeous and sounds amazing. good choice. love your channel :)
Hey Rikki, you have chosen WISELY! I love Yamaha drums and hardware. I have a little Stage Custom Birch bop kit for smaller gigs, and honestly, I absolutely LOVE it. What's meant to be a mid tier kit, it's got all the check boxes of pro level drums. (The snare is a Tama 12 x 5 han hammered steel though) The little 18" kick with a mic in shocks people that something that small can sound so punchy! Toms have the right amount of decay and tone. On the ship I worked at for 5 years, all Yamahas. Maple/Birch/Oak customs all round. I miss them drums...
ps my main kit is a Tama Starclassic Maple, which I also love... But Yamaha are fantastic.
I just discovered your channel a week ago and subscribed, great videos, love your playing and knowledge Rikki !!
Nice choice Rikki! Sounds great!
Hi, I’m OrkDrum. Followed you and the guys since the 80s. You’re one of the musicians I learned my drumming from. Great to hear some drum chat. Amazing Yamaha kit!
I’d love to do a drum jam online video, if you’re ever up for it and have enough time. Cheers Rikki 🥁
If I could change kits every time I played, I would. Love it! If you get a chance to do a video on all your vintage kits, would love to see that. Or even a video of all the old Poison kits would be interesting and fun. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the great video and all the detail you went into...... I'm a guitarist, not a drummer but I was totally engaged in this video. Thanks again for the great content and best wishes for you and Yamaha.... 🙂
Kits looking great sounds killer. Good luck with it. Swoooop
That’s a nice looking kit. I especially like how the grain pops out. Good color scheme as well.
Hi Rikki
Very informative , thanks for sharing all the tech info
EXCELLENT review, really enjoyed the detail you went into on this! Your new Yamaha kit sounds enormous yet punchy and round, just as you described, NICE!
dude! i love how into the drums you are! your so real and honest have fun with those new drums. yamaha's are killer. im a gms guy myself but have all the other stuff too. even a smoke sonor acrylic. good luck with all your endeavors! you rock!
Those look beautiful! Can’t wait to hear them recorded! I tried some Yamaha oak customs once and they sounded amazing.
Nice kit Riki! I still play my 1992 Tama rockstar dx.. I got them for my 13th birthday.. that is when tama was still made in Japan. The tone is amazing. I’m self taught . I had the old school home stereo and my first kit which was Pearl exports ,learned playing along with my favorite bands. Poison being one, so I leaned playing along with you MR Rocket. You were a true inspiration and influence of mine. Thanks for all the music sir
I just starting playing drums 2 weeks ago, cannot wait until i get enough experience to begin learning some of these poison songs. Keep up the Vlogs Rikki i love seeing all the behind the scenes stuff.
I also was a young fan starting drum because of you. You were my first concert Poison Slaughter Bullet Boys. I truly enjoyed watching this and look forward to more along your journey with Yamaha. Congratulations on the new drums they look and sound great 🥁🔥
I love my two 20s (14 rack, 16 floor) and thinking about building out a kit w two 18s. I love the feel of two kicks and the footprint / hauling it isn’t super bad. Love the channel!
I really like your new drum set. I don't know anything about drum's, lol but you make it very interesting. I've missed alot of your video's, gotta catch up soon. Have a great day Rikki!
They sound pretty damn SICK !! Can't wait to see/hear them in action at a Poison Show. Or whatever side gig you plan on doing too possibly if you come to the east coast. 🥁
Great choice. I remember hearing the great Paul Leim saying that a big reason he plays Yamaha is because of their international footprint and reach. He can be any where in the world and still be near the support he needed from Yamaha.
Yes and take it from that legend for sure!
Good looking kit and I do like the sound!
I use the bass drum Tom Mount to mic the bass from the inside. Works really well for me.. with my Sennheiser bass mic 902e, it gives a nice deep tone with lots of clicks. I no longer need 2 mics for the kick.. Give it a try, you might like it
Fellow PA guy here. I just wanted to say thank you for being so informative with your drums. I learned a lot from your new vid. Haven't played in a while but now I will be looking at things differently. Thank you!
I love Yamaha drums. I switched from all DW hardware to Yamaha Crosstown hardware two years ago and it was such a game changer. I absolutely love that finish too, I can't wait to see them on stage!
F ya awesome cans! Friggin beautiful too. Punchy and the low end cuts through. Yamaha drums most recorded drums ever. Btw love your real groove in beat lab! Lovin your uploads. At 55 I’m appreciating the fact I can still play drums professionally and these vids are inspiring to keep doing it. Takes a lot now that we are getting up there! Cheers from Maine! 🤘
Phenomenal Rik
Well deserved brother.
The drums sound fantastic.
That kit is absolutely gorgeous Rikki! 🤩
Sound killer Rikki Rockett!🚀⚡️🤘🏼🤩
Another great video, Rikki. Thank you! I've been jonesing for a Yamaha kit for years now.....I do however have the single FP-9. BEST pedal I've ever owned. Super sensitive and FAST!! Looking forward to your next vid. Peace, man!
Nice work Rikki!👍👍👍
I own a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute. Freaking love my kit. So versatile. Beautiful kit.
Beautiful kit!
Great review!
love the kit.
I just got a Yamaha stage custom. Haven't played it yet,but man am I hyped
Awesome video Rikki
Thanks for the message sir. This video was 🔥
Glad you liked it!
seems like you are SUPER pleased with your new Yamaha kit.....good for you.....enjoy
Damn man! I didn’t know you had a UA-cam channel until just now! You were my inspiration as a kid to get into drumming. I remember I was 6 (1987) and I saw the video for Your Mamma Don’t Dance and I was so friggin intrigued by your DW kit. Idk why. Anyway, I think I played the whole damn Open Up and Say Ahh album a thousand times on pots and Tupperware over the next year or so and then my folks bought me a CB700 starter kit. Lol. That DW kit btw is my favorite looking kit to this day. Plus it sounded amazing. Glad to see you’re doing well. Seen you guys at least a half dozen times over the years. Always a kick ass show! God Bless, my friend.
Hi Rikki. I have a 1980s pre YESS mount RC Yamaha kit and even back then the build quality was phenomenal. Great choice 👍👍
Likely the best drums ever produced.
Great kit, great choice, great company. Had the original Live Custom oaks before this series. Got a bunch of compliments from a few sound engineers. Was surprised when RR made the announcement. Good on him. Well done.
Rikki, I ove your style sir, thak you very much for all the amazing influence, great choice on those yamahas, however I miss your spectacular double-bass sets with all those cool florescents, salud amigo!!
Sounds great! Great company! My sister worked for Yamaha artist relations for years. I have a Maple custom absolute, dig it
Very cool Rikki. Last year, I purchased separate Yamaha Custom Birch drums. What an amazing set. I ended up getting a 13" rack, two 14" floors and a 22" Bass. The snare is a 12" Pork Pie. Thanks for this video. Keep rock alive brother.
I’ve been playing Pearl Drums & hardware for many years & have loved the quality & sound of their drums as well as the sturdiness and stability of their hardware. The 1987 Pearl Kit that I play works for me. Of course it’s paired with Remo Heads, Zildjian Cymbals, & newer Pearl Hardware & Pedals. That being said, I can totally see why you switched to Yamaha Drums & Hardware for the same reason I stayed with Pearl: it works and is reliable. By the way, your new kit looks & sounds totally awesome!!
I love Yamaha drums & percussion!! I’m blown away by the quality and sound!
Congrats with Yamaha! Always liked them. An old school Rock Tour Custom kit is on my bucket list.
Right on right on. Looks good on ya
Best sounding drum set I personally ever played was a Yamaha. And they've always been known for quality.
I love your playing. Very cool and challenging beats to try to copy!
Great stuff, I’ve been playing Yamaha for a long time. They record well.
Having followed the recent un boxing videos, the excitement and comments about the DW kit was always the appearance. They were stunning. Having sold a beautiful champagne sparkle DW kit because no matter how hard i tried, the 12” rack would never tune up to my liking, i get it ! I ended up building a yamaha RC kit and have been super happy with the consistency. Cannot wait to hear these oak hybrids on tour! Thanks for always making great videos for the fans to enjoy.
Thank you Matt!
Very cool drum kit. Sounds and looks great. I currently play a Crush drum kit which I love and it's very punchy. But I do miss my Yamaha stage custom. That was a great kit also
Man, those drums sound phenomenal!
I remember talking to you back stage in Dayton Ohio as a teenager when you made the switch from Pearl to DW and now I'm 52 for your switch from DW to Yamaha 😂🤘
😂
That's no f***ing joke!
Started drumming last year at 47 and just recently found your channel. Your kit is amazing and I am enjoying your videos. Though have to look up some of your drum lingo. Appreciate your content and look forward to more of them. Thank you 👍
Lingo? What can I clear up?
Wow much appreciated that you replied. When you go through the detail of your drum set you explain a lot of the benefits. For me I just need to research what you have explained. From the pedals, to the bass drum, to the size of the snare and toms. It’s a learning game which you are great at taking the time to pass the knowledge. I know I will learn more from the future videos and thanks again for taking time to make these.
Excellent choice!
Watching the video I was tickled to hear you mention Rogers, Rikki.
I presently cycle between my 66 Rogers, my 99 Keller DW, and I also have a Sakae Almighty Birch.
My actual name is Jim Killian on the profile.
Thanks for the gear update.
Loved my Yamaha stage custom!
Hey Rikki, I watched your previous video leading up to this one and I really thought you were going to go with sonor for a minute, but congrats on going with Yamaha! When I was 10 my father bought me my first kit which was a Yamaha and I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to learn on a kit with such a prestigious reputation ( no matter what it is that they are building ). I wish they would just start making cars! Anyways good stuff, you have some good taste in drums man! I’m also a big Rogers fan myself. I noticed you mentioned something in your last video about how you were thinking of passing the torch onto a young blood and I just wanted to say if you’re ever thinking about holding try-outs I’d definitely be interested if the opportunity presented itself. Looking forward to hearing more from this drum kit! Congrats again.
Music touring is an unique engagement, especially with the right sonic gear, changing climate and durability. I use to be a roadie for a known drummer, before jumping into music performance/recording myself (bass, synthesisers). Have fun with the new gear on the road this year! 🎶
No need for double bass on this, double pedal is just fine and the kit looks phenomenal! Great video, keep us posted buddy!
Yes Tommy A will approve I had a late 90’s Yamaha stage custom kit in raven black my first official drum kit had it a few years now I’m a pearl guy
I have a set of Yamaha drums love them easy to tune and the Yes clamp system is amazing and easy to use great choice Rikki,
Dude, I love how. you do your videos. and I am going to say what we are all thinking here that the POISON DRUMMER is the best drummer in the world. Its that simple that is all for now just wanted to let you know that 😇🤠
Just put in an order through a Yamaha rep for these in the Natural finish being they were out of stock everywhere (3 month wait). This makes me even more exited!
BAD ASS kit, Rikki!! Been a huge fan since Cat Dragged In. Got my nickname ( "CC" ) from walking around playing air-guitar from that album, although I am a drummer! I had my leg amputated due to an infection, but I still play occasionally. I use a double pedal and play the kick with my left foot. I'll take your old kit, man!!!!! lol You keep rockin' and I'll keep rollin' (in my WHEELCHAIR!!!!!) jeez I crack myself up...
You have an amazing attitude!
Their recording custom sets (all birch) sound phenomenal as well! Nice choice, Rikki 👍🙏 🔥
Awesome I have a Yamaha stage custom honey Amber birch with all Yamaha hardware. Mine tuned up in about 10 minutes for the whole kit. I bought mine 3 months ago. Everything feels and plays solid. I added the 10 inch tom and an extra 16 inch floor tom. The only thing I don't have is the double base pedals.
Dude, awesome! I've played the Beech Custom's since 2001 & I will never change. Cheers from an old Las Vegas drummer!!
I just got my LCHO the other day, in the blue finish. Get to set them up for the first time today. I tuned them up last night and god DAMN!!! 22x16, 22x18, 8,10,12,14,16,18
Craig does fantastic work on your kits! I've known him since high school and would love to have him do one of mine. The hardest thing to decide on is what to make the design 🤣.
Congratulations 🤘 I've loved Yamaha drums since I first saw and heard those awesome recording customs sets in the 80s. I myself have a 1st gen. Oak Custom set in natural Oak finish (from 2005 I think it was) that still sounds great. Punchy, powerful, resonant. Their hardware is also among the best I've tried, the hideaway boom arms, the YESS tom mounting system is always easy to use and reliable imo and their pedals are rock solid. Best of luck to you, man, I look forward to hearing you play those amazing drums 👍
I agree with you!
The points you made are spot on. I decided Yamaha drums were for me mostly because of Jimmy Chamberlain and Matt Cameron and their feedback on Yamaha drums....a long time ago. Glad for you that you found a good company to work with. Cheers!
Agree with the decision to go with bass drum mount. It has been so useful over the decades I've had my Yamaha.
Sweet video Rikki!
The shells are beautiful I love that charcoal finish and in my experience I've never owned a Yamaha kit but it I've owned Yamaha hardware that's withstood a beating through out the years but seeing this kit with the weights and the phenolic ply in the shells I would without a doubt own one of these kits and you just can't go wrong with Yamahas hardware
Rikki, I fell in love with Yamaha hardware when I first started drumming. Straight cymbal stands, boom stands they are the best! I love the ergo and detail in them. Also, in a great price range. 😊🤟🥁
Nice setup! I appreciate the classic sizes
YESSSSSS!!!! People sleep on Yamaha all the time!
Love Yamaha!!
The new kit sounds and looks amazing,go with what makes you wanna rock Rikki! Yamaha snares and boom stands have always been my favorite gear choices also.
4:03 dat gravity blast power quad lick tho... THAT WAS BAD-ASS. i'm just a hobbyist drummer and my drums never move from the room that they're in, but i've been thinking about upgrading and this phenolic/oak material combo appeals to me for some reason... Keep on ROCKIN', Rikki!!
Not only are you a fantastic drummer, but you seem so down-to-earth, and you're extremely knowledgeable. Great choice in drums! I'm sure being with Yamaha gives you better international support for your gear as well. The tom mount system is really the best...especially for fine adjustments.
Simplest and best tom mounts. Less is way more.
@@menriquez89 The best Tom mounts are the ones that do not penetrate the shell .
Phenomenal drums! Oaks are no jokes ;)
yep love my yamas, great vid............cheers
played Pearl for years and on a club tour show the backline only had Yamaha available and as I wasn't sponsored I figured what the hell. Holy Cow those drums sounded AWESOME! Hold tune where you want them. Congrats on your new deal!
Thanks for sharing all the detail and rationale on your decision. My first two kits were Yamaha in the 80s and 90s. Great company. I'm looking to move the other way though, primarily because the drummers whose sound I most adore tend to be DW artists (Chad Wackerman, Jim Keltner, Joe Travers). And DWe has my full attention. But not sure how you could go wrong with either company. Both are top-shelf, along with many others.
