How’d you get the dirt to not get hard and crumble without rain to keep it moist, did you just pour water on it

When I first applied it, I made it really wet and made sure the bottom of the board didn't bend and crack the dirt on top of it. If it ever cracked, I just wetted some loose dirt and filled it in
