There's nothing like hearing this piece live, even with a less than stellar orchestra. It is sheer theatre and an unbelievable spectacle of orchestral imagination and excitement. When played by the best, like here, it is nothing short of miraculous, a marvel of exhilaration and emotion. Tchaikovsky the greatest orchestrator ever.

When I was a boy, about 75 years ago, I heard my Italian mother singing the main theme to this piece with lyrics. For many years thereafter. I thought it was an Italian work until I heard it as Tchaikovsky's masterpiece. Though confused, it , with prodigious nostalgic affects, sent my heart to heights seeking the Godhead. What a masterpiece of creation!

there's also the Canzonetta of his violin concerto ( andante in g minor - th 2d mvt). Russian ware interested in popular tunes from foreign countries : never in a nationalist way. even Glinka in his jota aragonesa ( or even, some non russian composers : Liszt, Schubert ...)

Exactly! Much of it IS Italiano - he wrote it that way, he was so absolutely enamoured with the style of the time that was coming out of Italy, and yet still he has glimpses of Vienna. It's what makes it a work of genius, he fuses styles, reigns himself back in, then lets fly. It's a timeless masterpiece .

This piece definitely has Italian influences. The bugle call at the start of the piece was inspired by an Italian Army bugle call of the time since Tchaikovsky's hotel was next to an Italian cavalry barracks in Rome and he used to hear it every day. I'm not sure exactly what the call was for since in armies of that time there were calls for everything from reville to taps and everything in between. Another part of the piece is an Italian folk melody that I remember my father singing in Sicilian dialect.

Tchaikovsky is a genius of orchestration. He arranged brass and string voice as muted for constructing musical spatiality as if sounds coming from a distant italian seaside town. Though with many pauses between the italian melodies, he still managed to make it more coherent and dramatic than capriccio espagnol or other orchestral pieces containing folksongs. Tchaikovsky didn't want to show you a symphonic picture of italian town but he wanted to show you what he feeled when he was in Italy. His melancholy, his joyness with italian festivity and folkmusic ...... everything that is personal but also in every moment influenced by tht outside world. You will see a tormented soul living in this melancholic world, not bombastic folkmusic with chauvinistic imagination.

If he'd written nothing but the symphonies and the ballet music he would have made a permanent mark in musical history. This is a 'bon-bon' (as is, to a greater extent the 1812) to be enjoyed for its 'fun!'

Oui ! elle a donné à ma vie une source d'inspiration, elle part tranquille, puis elle s'élance là-bas, vers un à venir, un futur imminent...Mes Chers Amis, je vous souhaite un moment de plaisir à cette oeuvre Splendide !

Such a spectacular musical performance by gifted musicians and an emotional one for me. Tchaikovsky was a master! Capriccio Italien was my Sorrento-born Italian father's favorite classical piece, particularly the last few minutes! Tears stream down my face when I reminisce listening to this masterpiece on a worn 33 1/3rd vinyl album in the 60's in NY. Thank you (Grazie molto) You Tube very much!!!

It’s a wonderful performance of one of my favourite pieces.
I always feel it isn’t very Italian. The opening phrases always make me think of the limitless frozen steppes of Russia. Does anyone else agree?

@@ChristianP06 the opening of capriccio italiano is remeniscent of the bugle calls of the Palio of Siena but the main tune is from the old folksong "Babbo non vuole e mamma nemeno".

Very interesting remark about steppes of Russia. This never occured to me. The beginning really reminds me Tchaikovsky's 1-st symphony.

Absolutely amazing... mind blowing when you think that when it was composed there wasn't any YT in fact probably no way of recording the sound... you had to be there to experience it... I've just had this on loud in my garden. Used to listen to it on my Walkman '85 '86?

Tchaikovsky was the greatest of them all because of his astounding and incomparable versatility. Besides stand alone pieces like this magnificent composition and his 1812 Overture, he excelled at opera, concertos, symphonies, choral, chamber and, of course ballet. He also, may have been the first great modern song writer (None But The Lonely Heart). This rendition does do this majestic composition justice.

windstorm1000 some pianists say that Tchaikovsky’s piano pieces are quite awkward to play but he is otherwise an exceptionally versatile composers. Other candidates for most well rounded composers I would are Bach, who composes every form of music that was in existence in his lifetime and made enormous contributions to choral, solo instruments, and keyboards and Shostakovich, who was perhaps the greatest polystylist of all time
