@@RBHADD my fellow fan. I said he "didn't rehearse" my intent was for it to mean with the group. The article that lead me to this new cut talks about him telling the producer "don't worry"
Actually I believe he did rehearse with the the group. I remember reading in an article he did that he purposely toned it down a little in rehearsals and then let it rip for the live performance.
He rehearsed with them, it’s just that Marc Mann kept stepping on him and wouldn’t let him solo in rehearsals, so Prince chose violence when the time came.
The man who caught his guitar, was probably the same man, who randomly held him up, and pushed him back to his feet, when he laid back off the stage doing his guitar rift?
Yeah actually that was a fuck you to them since they kept him the whole time as background guy They disrespected him And he blew the stage They will remember that forever ..never mess with legends
There's a great article online about this performance and how he didn't really get to practice during the rehearsals for this because another guitar player kept jumping in where he was going to do his solo so he simply let everyone know he had it and where he would come in at the next day. The guitarist allegedly wasn't being disrespectful just overenthusiastic. Then he proceeded to murder that solo live and shock everyone on stage. Took that guitar off and threw it to the sky without even touching his hat, and told it to stay up there and it listened. Bet nobody ever stepped on another Prince guitar solo again. I love the interactions between Prince and Tom Petty and the way Dhani Harrison looked like he was having the time of his life.
Is it true that as a further example of just how good he was on that night and how a little respect should have been put on him that he bought a 12 dollar guitar in a pawn shop earlier in the dayand it was that that he played. If not, my favourite Prince ancedote is that when asked if he took drugs before performance he replied that he didn't smoke drugs just other guitarists 😂
Not to disappoint, but in an interview that’s easily searchable he says the smile was him being nervous because the rest of the band was annoyed Prince never showed up to rehearsals. He called Princes solo “gratuitous”. I was appalled at what they thought of him.
@@doubledollarman2727 I saw an interview on 60 Minutes wherein a close friend stated Prince told him that he only used "half gas" during rehearsal but let loose during the actual performance.
Dhani was so clearly excited for Prince to start playing. I love how he kept smiling at Prince. I feel at least 18 emotions simultaneously while listening and watching this performance. I get chills and cry every time I watch it.
If he wasn't using the vocoder or some form of auto-tune here, Lynne sang remarkably well. Overall, I'm still 50-50 on him. He was indeed a great songwriter in his day, but his production style was tone-deaf. Practically every single song (that I've heard) that Lynne produced for, or with another artist, is absolutely swamped by his heavy, overblown, multi-tracked sludge.
Yeah the just in case guy if my hat fall offstage when I throw the guitar,if I get to deep in the song and go into a coma guy to catch him if he falls off the stage and a guy to catch the guitar if it comes back to earth if. It dont just float away guy.He has a guy to cover every scenario.
I can’t stop looking at him fall back off that stage like that. It does it for me. Oh My. Even tho he did spot and make sure it was good to go. Y’all peep that. Lol
True, not only is he virtuoso in playing but he's completely connected to the moment and everyone in the band, filling in where the magic was needed and getting out of the way when the song needed to be... the way he does so many flashy moves with the guitar is also so engaging.. he's performing with every bit of himself and that guitar!!
Egocentric is at the heart of his performance. Its not a bad thing as it takes character to embody a show not just guitar skills beyond the norm. Ego is more theatrical... its a persona that made Prince own that stage with presence and the guitar licks made you know he owns your ears too lol! Sensory overload putting it mildly! There's only a chosen few that bring it like that.
@@wes3519 i feel the way for a performer to get around using ego is to stay in touch with the music. replace "Egocentric" with "Music-centric" and now we're talking. Ego is a dangerous drug. Let the music show you the way.
So awesome Prince pulled that out and ran with it. The shows producer told him to just play a small solo in the middle 😂 instead he gave them a serving of eat it. Nobody knew it was coming and you can feel the band trying to pull it back in but Prince said No Way I'm doing this😂 They had to just roll with it. Gotta Love it.
@@jurassicmatt2796 It irks me that more people don’t take writing into account when it comes to comparing Prince against Michael Jackson. Sure, Jackson wrote some of his music, but it’s pretty clear that Prince could play every single part on any one of his songs, and likely wrote most of those parts. On top of the lyrics, melodies and structure of everything.
This is absolute truth...heard dozens of musicians and artists who have played with him or collaborated that were in awe of his virtuosity on guitar and piano. Prince's musicianship was next level for a pop/rock/R&B artist. He was like a jazz virtuoso who played and created pop music.
The Kinks wrote that celluloid heroes never really die. Neither do musical heroes...we will listen to their recordings as long as there are devices to play them on.
What makes me so sad is that both Tom Petty and Prince (and to some extent Michael Jackson) killed themselves with drugs that eased the pain of performing on stage. I'd have been perfectly happy for them to perform sitting in goddam Lay-Z-Boys if it would have given them another couple of decades.
Still one of the coolest moments EVER> Finishes solo, tosses guitar, walks away! No one is that bad ass to do that to a Beatles song, except of course Prince!!

But still, a great bit of songwriting, and Harrison's solo on "Something" is still a great one.

Y'know why that was the way it was, right? Prince got snubbed by the producers and the other guy playing all the intermediary solos was given preference and Prince wasn't given time to practice with the band. So, Prince being Prince, said "f*ck that" and stole the show out from under everyone because he was a boss! You can see it on his face towards the end. He's looking at Tom FRIGGIN' Petty and the other guys like "yeah, I'm still going," and they all seem to look back as if to say, "do you, boo boo" 😂
His showmanship will never be matched. I love how he stayed quiet the entire first half and then just steal the whole stage. And proceeds to leave all the others with huge grins on their faces. What a legend.
Prince stated that this performance was one of the most fun times he's ever had on stage and that he would've been perfectly happy playing lead guitar in a great band (but we all know he wouldn't have been satisfied) 💜.

@@Grassman6900 It really makes sense too bc it's rare that an artist like Prince gets to play with legends he grew up admiring. You can literally see him looking to Tom like "look what I can do" lol. I really like the fact that Prince didn’t try to get the spotlight, stayed on the side until he had to do the solo. People think he was a diva, well, he was, but he was also very respectful.
He was definitely a diva, but he also had a strong opinion of people covering songs in general, he must have been very careful so as not to do the song injustice. Instead, he gave a great performance and stole the spotlight regardless.
But you can see Tom petty just couldn't shut up and let Prince go. Prince would be broken out his trance multiple times due to him continuing to sing. I love Tom Petty don't get it twisted but, ego just couldn't win that day.
The amount of talent in Prince's pinky gave him the right to be a diva. I watch this video at least once a week, especially for my dose of therapy, and each and every time I am left speechless. Prince was known to toss many a guitar over the years, but this one deserves its own place in the R&R Hall of Fame. And I'll bet Takumi never dropped a guitar even once in all those years. It sure looked like good fun then. You could even say that giving a great performance honored rather than dishonored George (that's a subjective view of course).
I was never a Prince fan. When I first heard him, was when Purple Rain came out and Van Halen, Genesis, Ozzy, etc. was ruling the airwaves. So I thought nothing of him UNTIL I saw this mind blowing solo! DAMN DID NAIL THAT BIG TIME! Maybe I should go back and visit more of his material 👍!?
I originally came across a clip of this performance as it was labelled the greatest solo of all time. I agree with that sentiment. Prince’s playing is simply off the charts here. A good solo should compliment the song, should never overpower it. His playing here is phenomenal. His solo is restrained, outrageous, technically perfect but sits so beautifully within the song itself - his guitar weeps indeed. Every time I watch this I have a smile a mile wide.
If you look at this and other footage, plus watch the documentary, Prince looked across to Tom Petty for a nod to keep going during the solo. He very consciously didn’t steal it, he asked for it.
This needs to go down in the annals of history as one of the greatest rock moments ever. Right up there with the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show and Queen at Live Aid.
@@CT-mw7yu It is debatable whether he is in the top 10 or not, but without a doubt prince is one of the greatest guitarists in history who is simply not recognized as such because he was so great at absolutely everything.
I've watched this many, many times on UA-cam, but have just come across this cut. Sublime! Prince's enigmatic smile and showmanship is incomparable. I love the back-story to this recording, too. Apparently during rehearsals Marc Mann took Prince's solo spot and he let it slide, the others weren't sure how it was going to be on the night but Prince assured them it would all work out and left. So when he did his epic solo he surprised the band. He said to someone in his entourage 'I took it easy on them in rehearsals and then I let the mutha fuckas have it'. They never knew where the guitar went. G.O.A.T.
I love how much he seemed to be enjoying himself with the company he was in. Prince never needed to be accepted he was already a god, but you can tell the honor meant a lot to him.
Agreed, when he and Petty look at each other and smile, and Petty is clearly grooving to his solo, you can tell he gets pretty encouraged and starts shredding even harder.
When Prince started his solo, NO ONE was standing up or even close to the stage. By the time he did the "dive" there was a sizable crowd, and by the end everyone was on their feet cheering. He is so magnetic. Also, the facial expression... he has zero fear on this face. Just pure mischief and enjoyment.
@@bethhendricks5567 Totally. I feel like Prince's solo was supposed to end after that dive, but he looks at Tom with a question - "Yes?" Tom smiles back: "Go for it" and from then on Prince basically runs the show and orchestrates the ending with his solo.
For those wondering: Prince's guitar here was an H.S. Anderson MadCat, a fairly rare Hohner '70s Telecaster knockoff, with Kinman pickups. At the end, it was caught by his guitar tech Takumi Suetsugu -- that throw-off being a common thing he did in concert.

He rehearsed with them, it’s just that Marc Mann kept stepping on him and wouldn’t let him solo in rehearsals, so Prince chose violence when the time came.

he OWNED THAT
Yeah actually that was a fuck you to them since they kept him the whole time as background guy
They disrespected him
And he blew the stage
They will remember that forever ..never mess with legends

For Prince, the theatrical performance is intimately tied to his incredible musical skills. It's not ego but dedication to performance.
Ego would have sounded out of sync. He's 100% in sync with the band-- it sounds sublime!!
100%

After he tosses the guitar and just before he exits the stage with his Princely confidence, you can see him cast a quick glance in the direction of his faithful and beloved guitar tech.
Swoosh, nothing but net.
(Oprah returned the guitar afterward.)
It's probably purifying itself at the bottom of Lake Minnetonka.
Having fulfilled its earthly duties, that guitar was caught by angels.
The guitar flew UP TO HEAVEN to meet him there later...........
I feel like i,m in heaven too. Greets from germany.
Sadly, Oprah has the guitar. Really.
@@richraiders5917 : /
Dude I played it back five times and u might be right lol
@@richraiders5917 Is this true??
Prince, easily one of the best f-ing guitarists on the planet.
Up in heaven, Jimi Hendrix is still buying him drinks on that performance
@Jackie Bereham maybe not. But his performance on the song "the cross" is heard and played in heaven.
@Jackie Bereham so u say
Hendrix is telling Prince in heaven , yeah not bad but look at Monterey pop festival and watch how my guitar weeps
@Jackie Bereham so, as a troll what does your “to do” list look like?
find new prince videos. check
complain about his music not being good. check.
mention heaven. check.
crack open a beer for job well done?
why though?
@@pdxorbust27 You have to wonder how pathetic & bitter Jackie's life is that they have to go around trying (& failing) to belittle world famous musicians.
That walk off at the end tho........only prince can mike drop a whole damn guitar
I have seen this performance several dozen times over the years. Allways end up in tears. It's just... too much of everything yet you still want more.
Yep.💯
So true dude
1st time
Jeff Lynne of ELO
I feel better now I know it makes other people cry too
That has to be the best ever ending to a guitar solo and this guy is just a genius
As I watch this for the umpteenth time, I see Prince ripping it up but I also see a man who loved everyone who came before him. Master showman and master guitarist paying homage to George and totally respecting the beauty of the song.
@Michal Brickley Thank you for giving all due respect to all due respect. Much agreed.✨🎶🎸🎶✨
Well said my friend.... Well said!!
Dave Grohl told a story on some TV show about how he and Prince jammed out playing Led Zepplin. Prince was so talented.

RIP George Harrison, Tom Petty, and Prince.
Amen to that!
Agreed.
gee that is so sad when you look at it like that,
so many rock greats have departed, you can only but hope there really is a heaven and they are all together jamming and swapping Rock God stories to make each other laugh....
george's son is a clone
Yup, . . Last and least
Love how Prince just leaves the stage when he was done. He was so rock n roll.
@Richard B good gods man, that's a shit take on this.
@Richard B if anyone sounds triggered it's you..............
@Richard B you’re the triggered one lol
@Richard B getting a little sassy there jr?
@Richard B so I am going out on a limb and say your not a Prince fan like the test of us here!!
When prince became famous I liked some of his songs but was not a true fan of him until I watched this video about a year ago. No only he let me know what he could do and perform but the same thing happens to a lot people that night right there live!! He blast a performance that gave me goose bumps every time I see this video. Every Friday night is Rock Night Friday in my house and my wife and I get the coolers ready with wine, beer and any name with the last name Alcohol. It’s party time and when it’s time for this song to come on it’s time to get serious! Prince simply Killed it!!
Jeff Lynne singing with Tom Petty became the best voices for that song. What a Performance!!
Definitely One of the GREATEST .... I never understood WHY to this day the Black Community chooses not to celebrate Hendrix or Prince the way they do other artists. I saw Hendrix LIVE several times and Prince too ... Both Blessed with GENIUS TALENT ...
SMH Eric Clapton is the 2nd best and prince is not the best. He just has more marketing
@@hemanshu3698 who is the best?
Stands to reason
Except sadly he never said this. His admiration for prince has been well stated by him helping him to come out of depression and renew his love of music.
@@bobbylavoie3223 There is no best, not possible.....
Of course, my first time seeing this, I'm wondering "why is Prince even there? After all, only the others are 'performing" while he's off to the side." OMG! My jaw dropped in awe. Once he started, you forget the "others" are even on the same stage. What a gift we have lost far too soon.
“The others” are gifts too, in their own right: Tom Petty (lost him to Fentanyl same as Prince), Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison’s son, Dhani Harrison.
Right, just steals the show
All so talented, but you had to see Prince live to really get how talented and special he was.
@@Kglov I hear you! I saw Prince at NYC's "The Bottom Line" right after "I Wanna Be Your Lover". The venue was the size of my living room! I also saw him do an impromptu walk-on during a Stevie Wonder concert at the Garden. I thought the rafters would collapse! Amazing!! When Michael Jackson died, I was shocked, but when Prince died, I actually cried :-(
@@JDoe001 Not taking anything away from the other talents. It's just that Prince was literally a musical genius, the kind of which we rarely get to enjoy.
The absolute glee on Dhani's face is EVERYTHING when he sees Prince. I also love how Prince doesn't make it about himself, not even about George, but for Dhani . What a great soul.
how very true
@Johnny Bitcoin B. GOODE I've heard this but it seems on the tape that Prince is smiling at Petty and they're sorta looking at each other a lot. Dhani seemed pleased at the time, too. Not sure what happened.
Prince was kind. remember that.
@Johnny Bitcoin B. GOODE Youth. It takes maturity to be kind.
@Johnny Bitcoin B. GOODE I wonder if Petty and Dhani enjoyed it at the time but someone spoke to them after and said something akin to "Prince really took over the stage and disrespected George" or whatnot and got them to decide that something was wrong.
Well said, I miss prince. A lot!
I love watching the reaction of George’s son listening to prince.
A stage full of absolute legends, with prince stealing the limelight for just a few minutes. George, Tom, Prince u are all missed.
I gather every musician on stage was glad to be part of a stellar performance
If you look at this and other footage, plus watch the documentary, Prince looked across to Tom Petty for a nod to keep going during the solo. He very consciously didn’t steal it, he asked for it.
@@abutomtom117 4:57
Dhani looks so much like George, and he's clearly loving every second of Prince's work.
Yeah but he later turned on Prince calling his performance "gratuitous." How dare he as only the son of someone.
This needs to go down in the annals of history as one of the greatest rock moments ever. Right up there with the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show and Queen at Live Aid.
annals...
Good choices
Agreed 👍
Annals, anals...
Prince was one of the best ever guitar players. A year before rolling stone magazine said he wasn't in the top 10 best ever. He shut them up. Respect.
Rolling stone load of rubbish. Group. Total boring.
Prince was a great composer and entertainer top 5 for sure, but not a top ten guitar player.
He wasn’t in the top ten , he was the GOAT . Just ask Clapton
@@403elle First the Clapton thing is a myth and never happened. Second, no he was no GOAT of guitar playing.
"They never knew where the guitar went. G.O.A.T.".....WOW!!!!!

@@geckolor I'm not... theres another edit of this video where you see the guy catch it
@@johnmartin9263 Nope.
I love how much he seemed to be enjoying himself with the company he was in. Prince never needed to be accepted he was already a god, but you can tell the honor meant a lot to him.
Well said.
And yet I've always thought that a possible/partial motivator for his work ethic was that he felt like he never quite fit in.
Spot on !
The smiles between Prince, Dhani and Tom just slays me.
@@bethhendricks5567 Totally. I feel like Prince's solo was supposed to end after that dive, but he looks at Tom with a question - "Yes?" Tom smiles back: "Go for it" and from then on Prince basically runs the show and orchestrates the ending with his solo.
"mischief and enjoyment". Lovely.
yes, lustful to the point of being sinful
For those wondering: Prince's guitar here was an H.S. Anderson MadCat, a fairly rare Hohner '70s Telecaster knockoff, with Kinman pickups. At the end, it was caught by his guitar tech Takumi Suetsugu -- that throw-off being a common thing he did in concert.
Where was Takumi - in the lighting rig???
Down in front of the audience -- you see Prince pausing for a beat after pitching the guitar to see the outcome.
He threw the guitar straight up, not out.
He ended up giving it to Oprah
Do you know what guitars were used on the original recording of When my guitar gently weeps ?
The guy in the flat cap's solo was fantastic. Prince was like....hold my beer! Amazing!
Who was that? He was nailing those parts.

Do you think so? I thought it was dreadful. Overplayed and entirely unnecessary, especially considering what was following. The guy is clearly a minnow in a shoal of much bigger fish. Less is usually more and he should have just not bothered. Goes to show a musical education doesn’t tell the most important thing - when not to show off.
The way that cat walks off stage... there's probably never been a cooler exit.
