In the US these are called 'pre-trip' and 'post-trip' inspections and are supposed to be done at the beginning and end of every trip. Requirement for every type of commercial vehicle, regardless of type.

I use a Steering Wheel Lock Bar between seat and brake pedal to test brake lights. Little tip if your on your own to check brake lights1. Back it up to a wall and check for the light reflection on the wall,2 use your mobile in video mode placed behind Jupes press the brake pedal then play back your video or 3 get a prop to wedge between your seat base and depressed brake pedal, obviously with the ignition on. Hope that's a handy tip. With a C class LGV licence without going into special types with multiple axles , you can drive a 4 axle rigid grossing 32 tonnes.

In the U.S. this License is a basic "CDL" (Commercial Driver's License) required to Drive a vehicle GVWR > 26,000 pounds. Other CDL classes allow to drive more types like Semis and HAZMAT trucks that have more rules to get. Is also why U-haul truck rental and some other larger trucks have (paraphrased) "this vehicle under 26,000 lb" printed on the sides because allow normal Class D license and avoid some other issues.

Past my test on a DAF 2800 in 1988 as part of my apprenticeship as a mechanic. in those days you could go straight onto Class 1 HGV(LGV C+E). One thing to say is that myself and other drivers would like to see is recently past test car drivers do a two day course on commercial vehicles as a passengers so they realise how different a commercial vehicle is to a car.

Trailers and towing vehicles should also be checked regularly prior any journey as well as people do forget this and neglect the maintenance and then end up getting in trouble with vosa or the police. I found that out when we borrowed someone's trailer last year who assured us it was road legal. Lets say most of the tyres were bald on the inside edge.

There are 2 causes, at least here in the US: Drivers aren't as diligent in the pre-trip inspection as they should be, and a lot of trucks use recapped tires, and they fail without warning.

I recall being on a transit bus which did not have these check done well. The bus stopped at a traffic light. One wheel just kept rolling through the intersection. My brother is a long haul trucker. One really wants things right and tight when the vehicle weighs near 40 tons and be going 100 Kph around 60 Mph. It can do more when going downhill. My brother drives all over the country, including passes high enough they cannot haul ice cream there. The air locked in the ice cream would explode opening up the tractor trailer. Those Rocky Mountain passes are something else.

And at least in my experience of volunteer departments nobody really checks them regularly. Except when they go for their safety twice a year. Something i hate to see.
Has jupes already gotten air dryers? Or do you have to manually emoty the tanks?
Even if they have dryers, many tanks still have the nipples, so it wouldnt hurt doing it from time to time.

@lmm that's rather unhelpful! It might be something you can retro fit. Renault, Iveco and MAN all do tipping crew cabs. I've worked on Isuzu crew cab trucks, and they've got the hinge and locking system of a day cab, then a fixed mount at the very back of the cab. None of the hydraulics for tipping fitted though. To get them to tip, you had to remove the rear mount, manually release the centre ne and then lift the cab with a hoist.
If yours has hinged front mounts, it could be a fun project to go to a truck breaker and see if you can get hold of thr bits needed to make it tip. I know you're running quite low on projects at the moment 😆

One question though, as Jupes is classed as an HGV, do you still have to adhere to HGV driving rules, such as having to break for 45 mins after 4 1/2 hours driving? Do you have to use a tacho? Just interested, as even though it isn't a commercial vehicle, as you stated in the video the dangers are the same!

      From gov.uk:
      Category C
You can drive vehicles over 3,500kg with a trailer up to 750kg maximum authorised mass (MAM).
Basically any truck that doesn't bend. As I understand it, back when licenses were class1 or class2 rather than c or c+e, a class 2 license had a weight limit, but would let you tow a drawbar trailer (wagon+drag) but the license categories were simplified a few years ago when they were trying to tempt more people into HGV driving.
