Had the same problem. You can try first to save it with hardcoded values as a dataset and then to edit that dataset and in settings there is a place for adding template parameters.

Unable to save the dataset while using a jinja template. We can only explore the data in chart, but we cannot save dataset to add metrics.

Macros are not working for me, it returns the literal string "{{ current_username }}" or whatever macro I use, what is wrong?
Seems like a functionality to promote using rushed ad-hoc changes rather than best practices ...
