Breaking Glass with Sound

- Rubbing the rim of a wine glass with a wet finger will cause it to resonate at its resonant frequency. The glass is placed in front of a speaker playing a sine wave, created by the function generator, of this same frequency. When the amplitude is turned up, we can see by shining a strobe light at the glass that this resonant frequency causes it to oscillate. When the glass becomes too stressed, it will shatter. Video: Eli Sidman; additional editing: Melanie Gonick.
My glass broke too but its because my wife threw it at me from the sound of the video ....
lol
Dont u have a headphone?
Wait I really broke?
tough stuff man
lmao
R.I.P. Headphone Users
i was wearing headphones
Wdym
Edit: ow
My head got blown to pieces
Hi
Not only that glass will break but ears will from that sound
thanks for warning lol
Gosh after a minute or two of watching this my ears are still vibrating like crazy😂😭
I knew when you detected that 440mhz "A note" from rubbing the glass that that is all you had to do is repeat it with more decibels because that is its sympathetic frequency to get it oscillating. Well Done!!!
Thank you youtube reccomendations, very cool!
Cool may I ask what device did you use to create that sound?
For Great experience watch at full volume
Yeah it cures my tinnitus for a couple minutes
LOL at the technician giving a comedy skit vibe to an otherwise serious science video 😂 The way he pops up after the parts have been identified, and his cringing in anticipation. And there’s a bit of an outtake at the end that will probably leave some people wondering how the glass reassembled itself 😄
Amazing! Love science! I am subscribing to this channel! Great to see these experiments in short videos. Thank you 🙏

I love how he just pops right up from under the desk 😂
Hi. Does the glass 🍷 break at its fundamental frequency or which
Harmonic? Do the results vary when experiment repeated. Thank-you
I think The harmonics are produced by clipping because sound was too loud(so the harmonics you hear in video is not present in irl when recorded)
when fundamental sound is matched with resonant frenquencies of a material and had enough loudness itll cause material to vibrate and break
That glass: AHHHH MY EAAARS!!!!!!!!!
Hey im kid sunshine nice name
You changed the frequency after you changed the amplitude! What you should have done is get the resonant frequency as accurately as you could beforehand, then increase amplitude. I want to know how low of an amplitude would work, and this doesn't get answered in the way you did it.
Sounds like you've got some experimenting to do!
Mind your own business sir
made my ears ring! tinnitus you sombich!
this is the reason I'm scared of screaming close to my laptop

Can I use this clip in my video clip?
@mit Is this video available for fair use under copyright law? I would love to use this video in a training video I have been asked to make for work. (I work for an company that deals with ultrasonic condition monitoring and this video explains the principle of resonance better than I ever could hope to)
wow very cool love to see people doing expements
Can i reload this video on one of my instagram videos ?? Please ??
Msy I use that video for teaching purpose?
Frequency?
from what I get it's different for each glass, you can figure it out by listening to the sound it makes when you circle the edges with a wet finger
I heard A
or I think it started at Ab then broke at B? ;-; idk I don’t have perfect pitch
or 440 hz
556 Hz should break a wine glass
Up until now, I had only seen glass break in cartoons
what frequency was used or did you just use sound and tweak it not knowing any data?
Can someone explain me the science behind this?
I didnt quite understand this, except the vibration of glass was same as that of the machine, thus it broke.
That was Awesome!
Hey, that's my jam.
cool sound waves!!!!
Qual é a frequência?
How or where could find more information about this test, Thanks
it helped me put my friend in a better place
Whats speakers? how many watt's and frequency?
Thanks man, good experience
This was i video I had to watch for science
What resonating frequency required to break a glass
around 500
550 to be exact
...You did this when I wasn't even born...
/ᐠ。ꞈ。ᐟ\
hi. if i put glass inside someones eyes and do the same method will it be enough to kill a guy? just wondering :)
Frequency??
OCTOBER 4TH AT 2:20 PM THERE WILL BE AN EMERGENCY TEST AND THEY WILL BE PLAYING THIS TONE! TURN ALL DEVICES OFF FOR 30 MIN!
DAMMMIT..... EVERYTHING NEAR MY SPEAKERS SHATTERED........
OHHH
HAHAHA LOL
(MIT) Research: Cracking Skulls with Sound in the neighborhood...
Nice!
Advice: Don't watch this at 12:00 am, very creepy, feel like that Grudge Girl is gonna climb out my screen
Make sure to deactivate the media sounds while watching this video
I'm just here to theorise. If ever breaks at a certain frequency does that mean we could break the universe, just a theory.
What.... but I do that water and cup thing and it doesn’t break
my cat just blew Into pieces,jk cool video bro .
Why does this sound almost made me sleep ???!!
Its funny how they call it glass but its actually the material like would you call the Holy Grail gold ?
Do this again with higher res
That broke my ear drums as well.
i hade cup and it broke while watching, im suing you /j
RIP headphone users that put it on the highest volume
That’s a plastic wine glass
Does this happen in real life
yes what do you think this video is?
I tapped my vase on something once and it started to do a hum louder and louder I touched it right away and made it stop, I don't think anything good was going to come out of seeing what happens lol
Now just imagine if someone took this, and made a way bigger version into a bomb😅
I was 4 when this came out
Wow k wasn't even born
UA-cam : how was the video?
Me : good
UA-cam: did you give it a Like
Me : good
🤯
This is what it looks like on the inside of a healthy man's attention span. When episodes of the view are played.
This is what my brain looked like when my ex-girlfriend used to bitch at me over something lame like leaving a single wine glass in the kitchen sink.
what air conditioner secret hidden sound weapon can cause do to human brain as Breaking Glass with Sound
Just throw it. that's enough for us
Thank God sound energy from sun might have destroyed all planet if the sun's strong magnetic field prevent it escaping to space!!!
This is louder than my flipping hoover
I am using this to prank my folks
It's sounds like the kazoo kid . Lol
what is the frequency in this experiment ..
sine wave calculate it
I think it’s A. So 440 hz But it breaks at B
It is 447 Hz, just a few cents above middle A.
All of our phone and laptop screens break
Anybody else here from Death Battle?
Thanks I pranked my mum
😂🤣
Wobbleing like a jelly
GENERATOR
That is mentioned in quran 1400 years ago
No one said what Fr.
anybody watchin this in 2021-
Dude I am just trying right break a windo
I’m older than this video
Why did not it brake my phones screen
Just play Ali-A intro and the results will be the same.
kid rock
My house broke too....😔😔😔😔😔😔😔🤛🤛🤛🤜
MY EARSSSS HELP IM DEAF
nooooooooo
!!!
Who is watching it in 2k21

Why increase sound when it adds every time the cycle completes? Is there a point of increasing sound to increase vibration amplitude?
Loudness depends on the amplitude of vibration, to increase the sound means to increase the amplitude of vibration
@@brunoh_bx yeah but in resonance the energy adds up, right? So even small volume should add up gradually and break the glass, right?
@@daddy7973 How can energy add up without an external force? Sound is a form of energy, so if you increase the volume that means the energy also increases. Read more about mechanical resonance you will understand. So energy can not add it self there must be a source, and here a source is sound i.e volume
@@brunoh_bx Bhai sound energy add nhi hota hai kya resonance k state me? Tum khud padhe ho. Resonance ka use hi isliye kiya jata hai taki har ek oscillation me jo energy aata hai wo add hota jae. So it's not just the energy in each cycle but total accumulated energy over a period of time. That's what resonance is. And this is not limited to mechanical waves, any sort of wave can exhibit resonance e.g. em wave resonance. Radio equipments work on that em wave resonance principle. Waha konsa force hota hai? Hum radio tunning krte hai alag alag channel listen krne k liye usme v actually hum frequency ko match karate hain incoming radio wave se taki resonance ho sakte. Topic is large.
@@daddy7973 You quoted me wrong, i didn't mean resonance occurs only in mechanical waves
I had to plug my ears.
My sister when she screams
Science fair 💀
SPEAKER
Wow..after listening to that my glass eye fell out.
.just kidding.😄
😂
GLASS
Ullo ki dum tera glass टूटा, par mere दिमाग nahi
Lol rip my speakers..
wow ntg 2 say
Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
