  • In this tutorial, I show you how to get the background blur in your image using the Sony 55-210 with the Sony a6000. You'll find out it's not really hard to do. This lens is not optically the best, but if you learn how to use it, you can still get some great shots.

    The 55 to 210 lens is a cracking little zoom to carry around. It's not going to win any super sharpness awards but it gives a good amount of reach in a tiny lens package. I used mine extensively on a recent holiday, I thought I'd barely use it but the very sunny weather meant its slow aperture wasn't a problem for me. Needless to say it has its limits, don't go expecting this to come close to a 70 - 200 f2.8 but for pleasure shooting its perfectly fine 😃

    Also its important to keep your subject far enough away from the background in order to throw the back out. If your subject is up against a wall or fence, you wont be able to throw out the background as much if at all, esp at only f5.6 or f6.3 which is the max aperture on this lens when zoomed in. So 3 keys are: 1) Use widest aperture possible at focal length set; 2) Get as close to your subject as possible to increase blur/compression; 3) have subject far away from background. With those 3 tips you will maximize the blur in the back even with a kit lens.

    After seeing your video I decided to go for a shoot with the 55-210mm, on the a5000. Mainly used it between 100-150mm at f5.6 - f6.3 and I was really impressed by the results. However, it really made me think about buying the 18-105 f4 :D

    Thanks again brother! I went to the Zoo on Sunday with my A6000, but I was in a quandary because my kit lens didn't do any justice..hahaaa. I even forgot to turn on the auto/tracking AF... Last night I was searching for a zoom lens online, and now I see that you just uploaded exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!

    Awesome stuff! Been binge watching your a6000 vids lately. :D Is there a noticeable background blur differerence on 55mm and 220mm given that they have the same composition? I have always preferred going lower before, as it helps with reducing camera shake and especially when shooting handheld (also allows faster shutter speed if I remember your tutorial correctly). Hope to see more videos soon!

    • @that1cameraguy
      @that1cameraguy  7 років тому +2

      You will have to use a slightly faster shutter speed at the furthest length of 210mm. Something like 1/320 would probably be a safe shutter speed with optical steady shot enabled to prevent blur. Since we're taking photos daytime outside you can increase your shutter speed a little more if you're worried about shake. I do have some more videos on the way. Thanks again for watching and following the series!

    Hi there. Really useful video! But I have a question. If I use this lens on a a5000, which is a crop sensor...does it actually mean that I have to multiply the Aperture with 1.5 in order to find out the actual settings? And does it mean that I loose sharpness and megapixels? Thank you!

    • @user-lx4tf1yk5m
      @user-lx4tf1yk5m 4 роки тому

      No, you don't need to multiply aperture, only focal length.

    Do you still use this lens? And have you tried changing the quality from fine to ex fine or raw as to see the crispness of focus? I have the a6500 and it seems to me to get a crisper image shooting in standard or fine rather than ex fine raw ect. Maybe this is due to it taking more information in at better quality settings idk.

    Actually f/5.6 Blur is always the same amount with same framing, doesn't matter what focal length.

    • @QuietOC
      @QuietOC 6 років тому

      But you can't keep everything framed the same with a different focal length. The background framing will decrease relative to foreground framing at longer focal lengths.
