  • Today we have an update on the progress of our custom sleeping platform and drawer system that we are building for our GMT800 Yukon XL overlanding rig.
    The goal is to rival a Goose Gear style platform at a fraction of the cost. Since no one makes something like this in the first place for our vehicle, we had no choice but to DIY!

    I'm a firm believer this is the "con" the world needs. DIY keep you hands busy and so many problems go away. GREAT JOB ANDREW!

    Aluminum Extrusion has changed how we build now, light, strong, easy to build with, and simple woodworking tools work well. GG is so bloody expensive. Great job!
    I like the play on the 'Goose' name by adding a Gander sticker...well done!!!

      I have been trying figure out the best way to utilize the 80/20 for the small space in the back of a 2-dr Jeep, your folding storage method is cracking...if you do not mind, I would like to employ that method in my design?@@OverlandAdventureTimes

      Absolutley! Do be aware, ( I can't remember if it's in either video) that with the thickness of the MDF on top of the 80/20 frame, mine doesn't fold completely flat (the frame). I haven't bothered figuring out a better hinge solution, as when I have ours folded up, I usually have our bedding stuffed on the folded section to make as much room in the back as possible, and it kind of rides on that.

    What did you use to enclose the front box?

    • @OverlandAdventureTimes
      @OverlandAdventureTimes  Рік тому

      The sides and bottom are 1/4" plywood, and the top sliding lids are 1/8" HDPE so they can slide on top of each other in the slots

    Boss, you got the plans for the build?

    • @OverlandAdventureTimes
      @OverlandAdventureTimes  2 роки тому +1

      Nothing formal, no. Mainly just a lot of measurements scribbled down and terrible sketches I didn't keep! Looking at my orders, the basic dimensions for the two main sections are 52.5" long, 22.5" wide, and 8" high. Those are the actual extrusion dimensions, keep in mind the corner blocks add an inch to your length and width at each point. The front folding box is just the final width of both long sections, so like 49" total, extrusions plus corner blocks. And the extrusions for the folding box length were 16.5", and the same 8" high legs. Whether or not you want to use the same connections, corner blocks or not, etc, and how you decide to hinge it, etc, could make any of those measurements vary. Grab a tape measure, get on the TNUTZ website to see what hardware you'd like to use, and have at it! Planning is at least half the fun!

    Where did you find the corner blocks? Great build and setup. New Sub here!

      Thanks for subscribing! Corner blocks are from TNutz as well:

      These are all I see currently, pretty sure what I ordered were zinc, and a lot cheaper. They do still list zinc in the rounded corners, though

    Nice build. How did you connect the frame to the floor of suburban?

    • @OverlandAdventureTimes
      @OverlandAdventureTimes  2 роки тому

      Thanks! So far I've just zip tied the front bottom bar of the frame to the 3rd row seat mounting bars on the floor on each side. I'd like to add something like a turnbuckle at the rear to some factory mounting points on each side. Even just zip tied, it can only move maybe a quarter inch front to back under some pretty rough conditions.

    good job! what thickness 80/20 are you using?

    • @OverlandAdventureTimes
      @OverlandAdventureTimes  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! It's 1"x1" 10 series, with some 1"x3" around the hinged section.
