Thanks for this video! I've been trying to figure out why I couldn't buzz low on the embousure - I was using too much pressure. Love the chill tones of the play along tracks.
Been looking forward to this video, I’ve been trying the new low exercise on a trombone mouthpiece and the higher exercise on the embosure for the past few weeks. It has been helping a lot through a big embouchure change!
Thanks for your enormous generosity in taking the time to make and share so many videos about the Embosure! I have a question about these exercises (and using the Embosure in general) - what do you do to relate these exercises that are so much lower than the normal trumpet range to the rest of your playing? Do you start down low like this to avoid tension, then gradually work that up into your normal playing range, or is there something else you do or think about to make the Embosure practice relate to your normal practice? Thanks!
Thanks for the question. In general I’m referring to not relying on pressure on the teeth/lips to secure the aperture. The corners or overall support of the area outside of the mouthpiece to be engaged “forward” to help create a healthy cushion. Make sense?
Thanks so much for the quick reply! Yes, it does make sense! I’ve been working with the Embosure for a few weeks and I think I’m finally starting to get it. Any kind of buzzing for me created huge pressure, if I could even get something out. This is an entirely different feeling - and it’s hard to explain. Does it, or should it, feel the same with the horn on your lips? Thanks again! This is a great device!
Tom, I have a question. I hear you regularly talk about using this tool with ease of playing, or no pressure. I assume you mean to relax and take the pressure out of your embosure. While playing with no pressure are you still using air support with this tool? I am about to order my tool and I just wanted to get your thought on the notion of this tool with or without air support. Thanks for all you do...
Hello Michael, Thanks for the question. I'm trying to not let the overall embouchure relax or collapse. There is pressure, I'm just trying to not use so much that the buzz stops. As far as air support, I'm definitely using air support and trying to work for a strong balance between lips together and out embouchure muscles maintaining that balance. I think people (myself included for a long time) try to find balance between the trumpet and their body. The real balance is between the lips and air I hope that helps.
Tom, I have been using the Embosure now for a couple of weeks, watching all the videos and using the exercises with the drone. I have trouble coordinating the use of the straw and tongue to get the note started. It seems like you are blowing through the straw, withdrawing it, and using the tongue to focus the air. I find it difficult to place the tongue without blocking off the straw, which seems to negate the utility of the straw. My best strategy seems to be to not use the straw. Instead I attack normally releasing the tip of the tongue from the back of the upper teeth and immediately place the tip of the tongue slightly touching the lower lip to focus the air. Could you please comment and thanks for this excellent approach to getting us in touch with our embouchure!
I realize now that I was sticking the straw in too far. Now I just place the end between my lips. I can do an air attack by just withdrawing the straw while blowing. Or I can do a tongue attack while simultaneously withdrawing the straw.
Hi Charles, I think your approach is fine. Although I'm not totally sure about the tongue touching the lower lip. Send me a short video through my website email and I can take a listen.
@@ThomasHooten Thanks for responding, Tom! Do you need a video or would an audio recording be ok? I routinely make audio recordings as I am working on etudes. However, I take it that you don't think my tongue should touch my lower lip. I will try to avoid that. I was trying to focus the air.
@@ThomasHooten So I sent my video, but in the meantime, thanks to the Embosure, I have discovered something interesting about the vibration of my reed, as you call it. Every morning I warm up by buzzing the extended exercise down and up. At random times, and especially when I was going up, my lips would just stop buzzing and I would have to blow hard to keep the buzz going. Of course, this is bad. The interesting thing though is that I could easily free buzz the same exercise perfectly. How is that possible? The only explanation I have is that the rim on the lips is stopping the vibration. So I released some of the pressure on the top lip by rotating the rim downward, putting more pressure on the bottom lip. To maintain a seal now on the top lip I have to push the corners forward. This is a new sensation for me. However, I can now get through the extended exercises without the buzz cutting out!

The best part of this video is the stage call, then the nonchalant “…we are doing Mahler 1 tonight…”😂😂😂😂
Haha!!

I can feel the tip of my tongue vibrating…does this mean my tongue is too far forward?
Thank you 🙏
When you refer to a "forwardness", what does that mean?

Thank you for taking the time to answer. Your answer is what I expected and more. Merry Christmas my friend.

My dictionary say it the "embouchure."
It’s right. Embosure is the product name
