I remember one time I was driving I noticed a police cruiser behind me, kept going the same roads I was, and I noticed on roundabouts and turns, they didn't use their indicators. When I saw that happened several times, I started blinking my hazard lights quickly to let them know. Me using hazard lights if not called got it, is a violation, so they ended up flashing the blue lights and I stopped at a busstop They asked why I kept using my hazard lights, and I responded kindly, I just noticed on my rearview mirror that you didn't use indicators. You are the police and are not above the law, but should uphold it right. His face turned red with embarrassment, nodded and said thank you for letting us know, we will do better. In Sweden (country closest to Norway, charing the same border) we are educated for 3 years. 1,5 years in "school"/the acadamy. And then 1,5 years in the field working, always with an instructor/superviser. And if you do a good job during that time in the field you're accepted and graduate.
Nordic (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark) police education (3-4 years, bachelor's degree) vs. American police training (6-8 months). There is no time for learning psychology or how to de-escalate aggression by verbal communication and body language, if the training period is as short as the training of a private rifleman in a reservist army. Police is also a much more respected profession among young people in the Nordics, and the police colleges get to choose only the most suitable applicants in the long process of comprehensive physical, psychological and academic tests. In Finland, for example, there are 15 applicants for each new police cadet. Of course American policemen and -women may learn these skills while working with good, more experienced collagues, but this is not always possible, especially in smaller departments.

Training too, average training time between states in US is about 6-8 months. In nordic countries 2-3 years. Police are learned how to control situation with calm manner vs takedown aggression in US. Of course there are more guns involved, but people would lie if they have never seen US cops escalate situations to worse.

+Alex Romanov I would have to say the largest difference in training of US police and the Norwegian police is the academic duration and construction. In America the average police academy training program is 19 weeks. In Norway, you are required to complete 3 years with a bachelor paper to become a police officer. Additionally one of the courses is ethics, and is considered to be crucial in making a good law enforcement officer. From what i understand, Us police academy have a course on how to deal with civilians. However the couse has been criticized for training officers to dehumanise civilians and develop aggressive behavior. That's my theory anyway.
The longest is San Diego with 6 months, and that's not even close to being good enough by my opinion. As a police officer you need thorough studies in law aswell. How can you enforce the laws when you don't even know what the laws are..:/
US cops needs to focus on learning more psychology to de-escalate situations. A lot of episodes I've seen from the US could have been solved peacefully if the cop knew how to de-escalate the situation.
The problem for the US is that they rather spend the low taxes on war instead of education. Education is relevant for everyone incl. cops but this is what the US choose to ignore again and again. The situation will simply not get any better in the US.. it just can't because of its mentality. This is literally why we generally trust our police in the Nordic Countries. Not that they can't make a fuckup too, but in general they are very well trained in psychology and absolutely most arrests are nonviolent. Even when a situation escalates they are trained to use minimum force required. For instance a provocateur politician held a meeting in Aarhus (denmark) against immigration and where attacked by a man with a knife. The police shot the man in his leg (one single shot) disarmed him and provided first aid during his arrest, until he could be taken to a hospital. You only use the force necessary to dissolve the situation and nothing more. Always keeping the situation as calm as possible, that is basic knowledge anyone coming through police training should know by heart.

Yes - I agree completely. It's like an episode of Supernanny! When the stupid toddler lashes out - he's automatically picked up and put in the police car with no anger or shouting. Just ruthless efficiency. His "naughty step" will be a jail cell for 8 hours (not 8 minutes). Excellent police training and discipline shown here - at every stage, they knew what to do. Hi, I’m from the U.S and I wanted to know why so many people from Norway or Sweden can speak English. In the U.S (well southern U.S) we are only given Spanish as an elective language to learn in school any other language would be self taught. so how and why do so many people learn English ?

It is an international language, so it is nice to be able to communicate with people who can't speak Norwegian. Especially since we have a lot of tourists and immigrants in Norway and we come across a lot of English entertainment, etc. When we attend ungdomsskolen (junior high?), which is 8-10th grade, we can decide to learn either german, spanish or french, the options may vary from school to school depending on the available teachers, in addition to Norwegian and English. If the student doesn't want to learn another language, it is possible to specialize in Norwegian or English. Norwegian consists of two written languages, bokmål and nynorsk. Most people in Norway know English.

The education system in Norway really works, and we are well established in both written form and in spoken form. It can depend from generation to generation of course. Many elderly people can't talk English to save their lives. It's more common for younger people to speak English fluently. Danish citizen here. I was once stopped with a gram of weed on me. Here's how it went down: Was walking across a parking lot with groceries. Two civilian cops come right up to me. Shows badge "Hello, this is the police, can we have a look in your pockets?" I was in a temporary visitation zone so "yeah" Guy cop asks if I have anything in my pockets I shouldn't have. I say no. He goes through 3 pockets thorougly, so I knew I was fucked. I start grabbing into my pocket to get the gram He tells me to keep my hands visible I dig down into my pockets too fast to hear him and stop He does nothing I pull up the gram and say "Eh, you got me" Female cop pulls out ticketbook I hand over the gram to male cop and he says "thanks" I get told I'm being fined 1500 kroner (about 220dollars) I accept my ticket. Both cops tells me to have a nice day with a polite demeanor. I say "likewise" I was grumpy after, but I knew the risks. I get my ticket in the mail.
In Sweden you would have been fucked. Driver's license revoked and if you have kids the social services could take them from you because you are a drug addict.

Great that they examine people before taking them into the drunk tank. Some severe illnesses may cause symptoms that may have a person seem drunk, for instance a person on the verge of going into insulin coma, they may be confused aggressive and smell something like acetone. Sending someone like that to sleep the booze off may have them killed. WhileI suspect this dude in the clip may be an old aqaintance to these cops. Probably a result of the best police education in the world. Norwegian police are generally very professional at work and knows how to handle the different situations in a proper manner. It's just a big shame we "can't afford" to employee all highly skilled and newly educated officers.

What you have to understand is that - the difference in time taken to pass the academy aside - there's something else that is very different in Scandinavia, which weighs in a lot heavier than "just sending US cops to Norway". I'm talking about the Scandinavian infrastructure of course; you'd have to fundamentally change your system to get to a level where this would be feasible and dare I say it, adopt the dreaded socialist model. The whole point is that our systems are generally humane. No one needs to be homeless, no one needs to go hungry. This creates a base of trust in the individual, and THAT is basically why our societies thrive; because we build upon trust rather than distrust. Binds things together and leaves the individual with a notion that, say carrying a weapon in public is preposterous. Bad things happen over here, sure, but the scale is very different. Tl;dr you'd have to become socialist to achieve this.

We had two officers killed in 18 months, our situation here is a bit different than Norway. I lived in Norway for many years and one big difference is Norwegians for the most part have respect for the law and government.

But in my younger days I experienced almost this. I was a drunk idiot making havoc on the streets, but the police acted just like this with me...nice and cool and laughing with me, not AT me. They helped me and straightened me out and I'm forever grateful.

It's the Northern dialect, more known as a Nordland/Troms dialect leaning more over to them Troms one because of all the diphthongs). +Alex Romanov I would have to say the largest difference in training of US police and the Norwegian police is the academic duration and construction. In America the average police academy training program is 19 weeks. In Norway, you are required to complete 3 years with a bachelor paper to become a police officer. Additionally one of the courses is ethics, and is considered to be crucial in making a good law enforcement officer. From what i understand, Us police academy have a course on how to deal with civilians. However the couse has been criticized for training officers to dehumanise civilians and develop aggressive behavior. That's my theory anyway.
The longest is San Diego with 6 months, and that's not even close to being good enough by my opinion. As a police officer you need thorough studies in law aswell. How can you enforce the laws when you don't even know what the laws are..:/
US cops needs to focus on learning more psychology to de-escalate situations. A lot of episodes I've seen from the US could have been solved peacefully if the cop knew how to de-escalate the situation.
You're gonna have to move to a new country for that. Shit is never gonna change with police.
The problem for the US is that they rather spend the low taxes on war instead of education. Education is relevant for everyone incl. cops but this is what the US choose to ignore again and again. The situation will simply not get any better in the US.. it just can't because of its mentality. The scandinavian model is to logic to simple to humane to fair for a majority of americans to optin for it.
The only way to fix the US is for the strongest party to win and the right wing will kill to keep things as they are or to even make things worse. There is no future in the US for humane persons... its sad but you can always fight or migrate to another country.

This is literally why we generally trust our police in the Nordic Countries. Not that they can't make a fuckup too, but in general they are very well trained in psychology and absolutely most arrests are nonviolent. Even when a situation escalates they are trained to use minimum force required. For instance a provocateur politician held a meeting in Aarhus (denmark) against immigration and where attacked by a man with a knife. The police shot the man in his leg (one single shot) disarmed him and provided first aid during his arrest, until he could be taken to a hospital. You only use the force necessary to dissolve the situation and nothing more. Always keeping the situation as calm as possible, that is basic knowledge anyone coming through police training should know by heart.

Hi, I’m from the U.S and I wanted to know why so many people from Norway or Sweden can speak English. In the U.S (well southern U.S) we are only given Spanish as an elective language to learn in school any other language would be self taught. so how and why do so many people learn English ?
@@bumgarner4987 I am norwegian. English is a mandatory subject in all norwegian schools, so we start learning it when we are in 1st grade. It is an international language, so it is nice to be able to communicate with people who can't speak Norwegian. Especially since we have a lot of tourists and immigrants in Norway and we come across a lot of English entertainment, etc. When we attend ungdomsskolen (junior high?), which is 8-10th grade, we can decide to learn either german, spanish or french, the options may vary from school to school depending on the available teachers, in addition to Norwegian and English. If the student doesn't want to learn another language, it is possible to specialize in Norwegian or English. Norwegian consists of two written languages, bokmål and nynorsk.
Most people in Norway know English.

It can depend from generation to generation of course. Many elderly people can't talk English to save their lives. It's more common for younger people to speak English fluently.
The reason for this is because we've had English since first grade, but also because we socially active on platforms that uses English and television.

Was walking across a parking lot with groceries.
Two civilian cops come right up to me.

"Hello, this is the police, can we have a look in your pockets?"
I was in a temporary visitation zone so

Guy cop asks if I have anything in my pockets I shouldn't have.
I say no.
He goes through 3 pockets thorougly, so I knew I was fucked.
I start grabbing into my pocket to get the gram
He tells me to keep my hands visible
I dig down into my pockets too fast to hear him and stop
He does nothing
I pull up the gram and say
"Eh, you got me"
Female cop pulls out ticketbook
I hand over the gram to male cop and he says "thanks"
I get told I'm being fined 1500 kroner (about 220dollars)
I accept my ticket.
Both cops tells me to have a nice day with a polite demeanor.
I say "likewise"
I was grumpy after, but I knew the risks.
I get my ticket in the mail.
You got lucky, my friend had 0,6 of a gram of hashish in his wallet and got fined 4000kr (422$)

They are nice because they are smart and act acording to the situation. Norwegian police is extremely authortiarian in, for example, domestic violence cases or terrorism, and that's a very good thing. It shows how prepared they are to handle different scenarios.
Still have a lot of studying to do before I can understand a native speaker (and I don't even want to know how long it will take to understand a drunk native that speaks with a funny accent). But at least I got how the drunk guy called the police man a "pudding".

I got so confused in the end when they said “sykehus” because it sounds almost exactly like the Swedish word “psykhus” (the p is silent) which is slang for mental hospital. Good thing that I had the English subtitles.
Great that they examine people before taking them into the drunk tank. Some severe illnesses may cause symptoms that may have a person seem drunk, for instance a person on the verge of going into insulin coma, they may be confused aggressive and smell something like acetone. Sending someone like that to sleep the booze off may have them killed. WhileI suspect this dude in the clip may be an old aqaintance to these cops. It looks likea small town setting and they're probably somewhat familiar with the local hoodlums. Great job they did.

What you have to understand is that - the difference in time taken to pass the academy aside - there's something else that is very different in Scandinavia, which weighs in a lot heavier than "just sending US cops to Norway".
I'm talking about the Scandinavian infrastructure of course; you'd have to fundamentally change your system to get to a level where this would be feasible and dare I say it, adopt the dreaded socialist model.
The whole point is that our systems are generally humane. No one needs to be homeless, no one needs to go hungry. This creates a base of trust in the individual, and THAT is basically why our societies thrive; because we build upon trust rather than distrust. Binds things together and leaves the individual with a notion that, say carrying a weapon in public is preposterous.
Bad things happen over here, sure, but the scale is very different.

It's two completely different environments, but there are so many thousand videos of US police officers not even trying to de-escalate situations, but end up power tripping instead.
