    As an Australian, you are 99% spot on, I'm learning so much about my dialect from you, gotta say at times I cringe.
    2 quibbles... How's it hanging??? You gave a politically correct ( yet incorrect ) version of the translation. I get the real translation doesn't agree with UA-cam t&c
    Also, you disabled comments on a previous vid I viewed..
    You speak general, rather than cultured dialect. Be proud man!!
    You're awesome, I'm impressed by where the UA-cam rabbit hole took me👍🏼

      Hi, so embarrassed for my country, but also very guilty of 'what's up?' and 'see ya'.
      I reached an IT call centre in US once & the operator asked if he knew me - I think from my use of 'mate'. Soon he said where are you? Me: NSW mate. Him: What? Me: Australia. Him: Ohh I see... how are you? Me: Great mate what's up? Him: Um what was your question? Haha etc. He definitely had never spoken to an Australian!

  • @SpottedWithin

    As an American originally from the deep south, I can relate to a lot of these lol. Like in "What ya been up to" the only difference between how I've seen you say it and how I'd say it is the ta and to (too with a long o sound because we love our Southern drawl :P)

    All are pretty accurate for me as an Aussie from regional Victoria except for a couple.
    - "How are you doing?", I would usually not say "HOW AH YA DOO EN?". It would be closer to "HOW YA DOO EN?". Although I'd generally say "How are you going?" (pronounced: "HOW YA GAHN?") in most circumstances instead.
    - "What's going on?", I would pronounce that as "SCARN ON?"
    - "G'day" I never say this but I want to :P
    - "Howdy" I would never say this, ever
    - "What's the goss?" I've never said this but have heard people say it

    • @ShawnGaming11
      @ShawnGaming11 7 років тому

      Lol as an American, I can say the only people that say that are southern people or people raised by southerners, like my parents and grandparents say it but I dont

    Have to remember that when using "How's it going?" (or similar) it's a greeting and the question is rhetorical, we really aren't that interested. The standard reply is "yeah, alright" no matter how un-alright you might happen to be.

    • @maddyg3208
      @maddyg3208 6 років тому +11

      +Aye Chan Sorry to hear that you feel awkward. As a native Aussie, most of the greetings in this video are variations on the theme of "How are you?"; the standard answer is "alright". If the greeting is not in the form of a question, eg "Gday", "Hello" or "Hi" you can just say those words back. Above all don't be shy - we like people from overseas in Australia and very few of us can speak a foreign language, so it's not like we could do any better. So get out there and interact with some Aussies and your Strine will only improve!

    Deadly ! I really enjoy watching all your videos :) "What's the goss?" is similar to "What's the story?" which is used really often in Dublin in Ireland :)

For example: Aussie expressions used in a party, Aussie expressions used in work environment, Aussie expressions used driving, etc. Thanks for the neat work. Looking forward to seeing you in my upcoming visit to NSW. Hopefully within 12-15 months God Willing.

    "Hiya" is also very common, and best understood as a blend of "hi" and "how are ya". I use it a lot. For a more enthusiastic greeting, I'll typically go for "Hey, how are ya!" (Demographic reference: late 30s South Australian.)

    This is awesome. I've learned now that there's so many different ways that Aussies use to greet each other. However, I am curious to know if there's any gender differences in how these greetings were used by the speaker? It would be very helpful if you could do a video about gender differences in the usage of Aussie English! For example, how would a female and a male speaker go about saying something if the two were in the same situation? Thanks heaps!
