Founded in 1818 and originally known as Mauch Chunk, Jim Thorpe is now named after the athlete and Olympic gold medalist Jim Thorpe - a member of the Sac and Fox Nation and was the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States at the 1912 Olympics.
