About This Property
The Ocate Ranch consists of 862+/- deeded acres located in the southern part of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range in the tiny town of Ocate, NM. The ranch’s footprint sits alongside HWY 120 via I25, which is a direct route into New Mexico’s famous playground, The Enchanted Circle. This ranch has solely been used for many years as a small cattle operation for a local rancher.
Land
About 2/3 of the ranch consists of open pasture with a hearty source of good native grasses and foliage that fully cover its ground. The main pasture is parameter fenced and has supported between 30 and 50 head of cattle on a small operation for many years. LeFebres Creek meanders through the southern part of the property and offers a water source for the livestock year-round. There are also a couple of small catch ponds that remain full during the wet months.
The crown jewel of the property is a large plateau that covers almost 1/3 of the land that gently slopes up from the west and flattens out up on top to the east. This plateau offers several acres of build sites, campsites, and additional uses with amazing 360-degree views that expand for miles. The Plateau also overlooks the main pasture. One can see straight into the Sangre de Cristos and look directly into the south side of the Montoso Mountain range. The views from the plateau are something reminiscent of a postcard with a famous view. The plateau also offers a good number of trees, over half of which make for a good cover for the wildlife. Small herds of elk frequently cross the property on the north side and are often seen on a daily basis later into the year.
Recreation
This area is replete with recreational activities. Angel Fire and The Enchanted Circle are only about 35 minutes away. Five ski basins are close by including Angel Fire, Taos, Red River, Pajarito, and Sipapu. The famous Kit Carson National Forest is nearby and offers many opportunities to hike, camp, hunt, or ride ATVs, dirt bikes, and mountain bikes on its 1.5 million acres. Fishing in the area is an angler’s dream and can be found in local streams and rivers, including the Cimarron River, The Rio Grande, and many more. Trout, Northern Pike, and Kokanee Salmon can be fished out of Eagle Nest Lake less than an hour away.
Hunting- This area is known for having a plentiful amount of big and small game. Elk, Deer, Turkey, and the occasional Black Bear are a common sight. The ranch is no stranger to having its share of wildlife that frequent it daily. The Ranch falls within GMU 46, which is within the boundaries of the NM EPLUS Landowner zone. This means the ranch qualifies for Elk tags that will be allotted to the owners of the property on an annual basis. Some of the country’s largest Elk and Mule Deer roam in this area of Northern New Mexico. The ranch has not been hunted in years and gives ample opportunity for successful future hunts to a new owner.
Location
2 miles northwest of Ocate, NM directly off of Highway 120. Towns like Angel Fire, Taos, Red River, Eagle Nest, and Mora are within an hour’s reach.
