      I don't think so, unfortunately. It might be though, others at this club seem to be doing alt-right bingo. I think it's a tactical mistake at the very least, it's only going to reinforce the mistaken impression that freedom of speech is synonymous with the alt-right. 'Free-thinking' used to just mean atheism!

    • @henryburton6529
      @henryburton6529 3 роки тому +1

      @@jamesthecat Its because they equate being called a racist for being a racist, with, impingement on their right to be a racist without being called a racist. Confusing isnt it

    • @alibushell6762
      @alibushell6762 3 роки тому +2

      @@jamesthecat I've been to this club (it's not far from where I live) and seen some of the comedians there. I totally disagreed with the views of the one talking about how we needed Brexit yesterday, but he was still funny. So were the other comedians, whatever views their comedy was coming from, some were more right leaning and some seemed more left leaning.
      As much as a lot of the comedians that associate with this brand are doing so from a somewhat centre-right place in reaction against what they're insisting is woke gone made and cancellation culture galore, I do agree with them that there needs to be the ability to say things that people don't like. I'm pretty centrist, but very liberal; I'm interested in what works and is supported by evidence, not what is ideologically proper or fits with my preconceived ideas of what I want to believe works (something that I find a lot of right of centre viewpoints seem to). I find it interesting that the comedy that comes out of this space, one that celebrates being free to say what you want without limits, seems to often be political stances that I don't so much think are wrong, but more don't actually work or a more ideological/inductive lens of how things are. What does that then say about the whole free speech discussion? If the controversial or unpopular can frequently be tracked back to prejudiced, simplistic or just simply falsifiable thinking or beliefs (e.g. Brexit will simultaneously make everything different and better but nothing will change that we'll notice so don't worry about it, for example) then what does that say about the argument that free speech is under attack? Maybe what is being said just isn't needed to be heard.
      Still, it's good comedy :)

    • @mattygroves21478
      @mattygroves21478 3 роки тому +2

      Indeed Henry. You'd imagine that if you don't like being called a racist, the easiest way to avoid it would be not to say racist things. It's not super complicated.
      Truthfully though, regarding those that bemoan being called racist, I'm a little skeptical that the purported exchanges even happen in reality. Let's say that these exchanges did happen, I honestly believe that it would take a lot for anyone to come straight out and call someone a "racist" to their face. Being that direct to people is a lot harder to do in reality, even if faced with utterly abhorrent speech in the moment. Most people would surely say to themselves "I could call this person a racist, but what would happen? It'll likely not play out well". I don't doubt that I'm unique in generally choosing the path of least resistance in life...... for the most part.
      I've had family members and work colleagues say the most bigoted hateful stuff in front of me, and truthfully, I've just said nothing and let it slide by. In the calculus of 'how to deal with it' I just haven't seen the point in speaking up. Yes, I've made my disagreement known to people, and even done a small amount of reasoning, but I've very rarely gone as far as said "you're being a bigot". Reasoning, at best sows a seed, but you're never going to undo years of rationalized hatred in a single exchange.
      For a bit of context I'll share a story. I promise this is a true event from the last few weeks.
      I was doing a bit of IT work for an insurance broker in my local town. A lady arrived at the counter to discuss her car policy. Whilst her policy was being examined she started to make small talk with the staff. *"The world's gone mad!",* she said at one point. *"Look at all these BLM people pulling down statues and destroying history, and you can't say anything these days without the PC brigade saying, "you can't say that". I mean, one of my colleagues at work is being taken to a tribunal for calling a female Nigerian member of staff "a filthy monkey". The Nigerian woman, made a mess in the staff kitchen and didn't clean up properly after herself."*
      Now I'm working at the far side of the office thinking to myself, "oh yeah Mrs, what kind of a world do we live in, where you can't even call an African "a filthy monkey". No-one called her a racist, of course they didn't! Everyone just put their head down and stopped talking to her.
      I've read a lot of comments/thread on this channel. This is the only thread that has a consistently reasonable group of people having a back and forth.

    • @alibushell6762
      @alibushell6762 3 роки тому +1

      @@mattygroves21478 It is a refreshing change to the rush that a lot of people seem to have to go to one side of the argument or the other without really engaging with the discussion, I grant you that.
      In fairness to the "free thinking / freedom of speech" right of centre position, there are plenty of people that are making a living off the point that "you can't say anything". Dave Chapelle's last Netflix special was over an hour of him talking about how censored he was being. I wonder, considering he's not allowed to say anything now, how does he make so much money from his comedy?
