Fun Fact: During the filming in Italy, Stallone walked into the boutique of the dying wristwatch brand, Panerai. He loved how much bigger the watches were than the average watch and how they fit on his larger wrists. He began wearing them (a good shot at 4:42) and gifted many to other actors. They eventually became the defacto watch of Hollywood action stars. Panerai eventually named one their models the "Daylight" after the film, in gratitude for Stallone's saving of their company. These watches can still be seen, being worn on-screen by many Hollywood A-listers, such as Jason Stathom, The Rock, and Arnold Schwarzenegger ⌚⌚⌚
I also believe it's one of those movies that, despite its clichés and sometimes over-the-top scenarios, still manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. Stallone truly has a knack for embodying these rugged, yet loveable heroes. It's interesting to revisit older films like this and see how stars like Viggo Mortensen and Danielle Harris have evolved in their careers since then. The practical effects indeed lend a real sense of urgency and danger to the situation, which can sometimes be lost in the world of CGI-dominated films we see today. Randy Edelman’s score - it's one of those that can easily be overlooked, but it really does set the tone and atmosphere throughout the film. Your nostalgia-filled review just made me want to revisit this underrated gem. Here's to more rediscoveries of somewhat forgotten classics!
Daylight is my favorite Sylvester movie he plays a everyday hero trying to make a difference. As soon as the action starts he’s in full hero mode and doesn’t stop. How many people or citizens would do what he did risk his life to save others. No bad guys but the force of nature itself.
Even if its not his best or most popular, I always had a soft spot for this movie because it used to play on USA Network constantly back in the day and my Dad and I would watch it all the time. Brings back some good memories
Rob Cohen's Daylight with Sylvester Stallone was a fun, suspense film for Universal and Studio Canal in 1996. Nominated for an Oscar for best sound editing in 1997.
As someone who worked on THIS movie (in the editing Dept.), I can dish that the previews were in the 90% positive range, there was talk of a sequel and Cohen was going to do Saving Private Ryan next. All that changed when the movie bombed... 😢
Would you happen to recall any differences in the original cut compared to the theatrical cut? There doesn't even seem to be any deleted scenes released.
@@jameslatrobe Most of the cuts were just trims that gave more depth to every character, BUT there was one whole deleted scene we called the "No Fear scene." In it, Sly rallies the group to chant "No fear!" one by one until they are all chanting w. fists in the air. It's a laughable scene and I was glad when they cut it out. 😅
Not gonna lie in my opinion this is the last truly fun great underrated action movie of Stallone from the 90s. Was a good premise and also Viggo Mortensen was hilarious for a brief scene
I've always enjoyed Daylight. It always reminded me of the late yrs of Laserdisc and the early days of DVD and the heyday of DTS . DTS was the audio format of choice for movies released by Universal Pictures back then ....fun times
Fun fact: the movie “Daylight” was actually a screenplay written to be the sequel to the Poseidon Adventure which saw the survivors of the USS Poseidon trapped in a train tunnel after being saved from the shipwreck disaster on their way back to safety.
I haven't watched the video yet but I need to say that I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I remember that when I rented the VHS, I must have watched the explotion scene like 5 times.
This is one of my favorite Stallone movies. I seen it in theaters when it first came out and I still love that song whenever there is love. Plus I love disaster movies.
Oh man when I saw this on the big screen it blew me away! In the years since I find the overacting by most of the cast cringe worthy sadly. Not my favourite Stallone movie.
I used to see the trailer for this all the time when I was a kid on one of our VHS tapes and since I was a big fan of Stallone from the Rocky movies, I really wanted to see it! I've still never seen it and it's unfortunately not streaming anywhere currently...
A classic in my eyes. I had a lot of fun watching the movie in the Bioscoop. Stallone is a real action star and when his time comes, hé will leaf a lot of fun action movies 🎬🎥 that nobody can do beter. Greetings from the Netherlands
One of my the video tapes in my families collection when i was young, I'm really surprised you didn't mention the soundtrack, it's simply amazing and easily the best part of the whole Film.
In the mid 1990s,the studios were beginning to stop making big action films, because the demographic of ticket buyers changed. The studios wanted to make PG and PG 13 films, because kids(parents took them),teenagers and women were the big ticket buyers and then,it was the start of the international box office factor.
I paid good money to watch this in the cinema and I was not disappointed. Enjoyed almost every moment of this film. Viggo Mortensen's brief role was pitch-perfect. The group of rescuees were believable, some stoically surviving, some panicking, some just going along dazedly.
AGREED.I LOVE this film, had me on my knees ( just kidding )at the cinema the entire movie.Staalone was an every day man in this film, which I really liked. Rewatched Assassins a few months ago and LOVED it,good concept too.
@@powerbadpowerbad Assassins was a Wachowski script, but Donner directed. I liked it, but even while I was watching it I could tell I would have liked it a lot more if the leads had been considerably less well-known, perhaps even British. It didn't lend itself to A-listers.
I'm a big fan of disaster flicks and Daylight was one of the first I ever saw along with Twister and Independence Day. I was fourteen that year and I guess because it was one of the first films of that type that I saw it's been one of my favorites. Funny story about it. When I first went to see it in the cinema there was an issue about a third of the way through the movie and the film reel burned apart in the projector. So we got free tickets for a future showing. It was the only time this ever happened that I remember.
This film was a ripper great entertaining time at the theatre. 1996 was pretty hardcore for action movies Broken arrow, the rock, star trek, mission impossible, last man standing, etc good times!!!
Daylight is fine for the most part. Definitely different from Stallone's regular output. I liked seeing different shades of Stallone that we hadn't seen (much) before in Daylight. That said, yes, the film is too melodramatic at times. It's still worth a watch for Stallone fans.
Lock Up is a Stallone classic.. Love it.. Sly as Frank Leoni.. Donald Sutherland as the slimy warden..drumgool. The guy from die hard 2 as the head guard..mizener.. Tom sizemore as dallas.. Great prison flick.. "What just hit me"? "Freight train son"!!
For those who want to experience this film in a different manner; try the Max Allan Collins novelisation. It's unusually good/different as it is written from the POV of each character as like a documentary.
Stallone is the ideal star to carry a disaster movie. His physicality and heroic persona are both perfect for the genre. You can picture this guy laying down his life for strangers. Stallone has always been convincing playing noble characters. The only problem with this film is that the ending is a bit weak....it's almost as if they got Stallone underground, and couldn't figure out an entertaining way to get him back out again. But up til then, it was an outstanding film.
It's just so weird that this one completely forgettable, meh action film from 1996 changed the entire industry irrevocably, forever. When word got out in Hollywood that Sly was going to get an INSANE $20 million fee for his role, actors like Jim Carrey and Will Smith freaked out. Carrey of course insisted on $20 million for "The Cable Guy," Arnie got $20 million for his twenty minutes in "Batman & Robin" making him officially the highest paid actor per minute in history. Since most of those movies were outright bombs, the studio heads panicked and set a hard cap of $20 million on ANY contract going forward that his still never been breached. Harrison got exactly $20 million for Indy 5 and after that bombed as well you probably won't see an actor's salary that high again.
It’s funny just recently I was thinking about that movie😅 maybe it’s time I revisit it. I loved it. I thought it was a really good action. Flick a great heart and you know an all-star cast in my opinion. I know it’s not everybody’s favorite film, but neither was demolition Man and we all know how that turned out.
I think the various storylines work better than advertised here and overall this is an affecting disaster movie. Not a masterpiece but not the trainwreck some make it out to be.
Daylight was based off of a 1972 May 40v movie starring James Brolin called short walk to Daylight, they can be found on UA-cam and you tell me which one was the better movie
Having used both of the tunnels to and from NY I can say yea this is a lousy thought. But then did they ever allow combustible materials inside in the first place?
Besides the Rocky franchise this is one his best movies. Unfortunately the timing was not at its favor. Msybe a few years back or forward this might have been a hit.
You should have heard the original set audio. We had to ADR 80% of his lines. That being said, Sly was a pro at this and gave a much better reading for each line! 😮

His look in this film was the bases for Chris Redfields look in Resident Evil in '96.
