you should have included the species gongylus gongylodes or violin mantids. they typically only eat flying insects. slow motion footage of one grabing a fly out of the air would be unreal.
Jill Stassie what’s wrong with saying mantids? That’s what they are called as an intire group. Mantis is actually a particular species of mantid, although most do have the common name of “______ mantis” 🙂
Well...bugs are almost always able to lift more than their own weight. I believe the only thing restricting their size is levels of oxygen, explaining why bigger insects are found in less polluted areas
I seriously thought they were more precise and more lethal than that. Not that I'm disappointed, after all they play alot on speed and surprise. Yet I was expecting a bit more from these creatures.
Mantid is actually the proper word over mantis. I have had some myself and know what they are like. Usually they prefer ground insects but will take flys.
"Mantid is actually the proper word over mantis. I have had some myself and know what they are like. Usually they prefer ground insects but will take flys." Flies is actually the proper word over flys...lol just playing with you ; ) Didn't know a mantis should be referred to as mantis. They're a most beautiful predator.
Saw a bright green one catch a bee out of the air as it was about to land on a Lavender flower once and it just casually held it out and ate it from the head down.
DrCl4ym0re Yeah mate,no shit,in Victoria Australia our ones down here are only about 50mm or 3 inches long this one was about 2 inches long and held the bee in one arm and ate its head,. you cant make that shit up. I saw the whole thing while weeding out there, there was no escape it tried.
I'm astonished at how they just grab a bug and just start chewing away. Imagine being force-fed through a low powered paper shredder! Absolutely brutal!
I hadn't realized that mantises could actually stab their prey... I thought it was all in the sudden spiky vice grip, but you can see more than one of these strikes, the prey is harpooned right through the exoskeleton
I noticed that the cloud of the powder above the candle after the punch looked very much like a nebula in space. Am I seeing an example of how a nebula 'works' on a smaller scale here? I believe it's the same basic concept, though I'm certainly no expert. Anyways, this is awesome footage. Mantids are just striking! No pun intended, of course.
I remember in elementary school at recess we would go into the field and look for a praying mantis. We would never hurt them but just pick them up and look at them.
I love mantis bugs...X3 Though a few children at my school when I was younger where torturing one that they had found once. -_- I had to take the thing away from them, and from then on became known as the bug-whisperer...They'd call me to take care of bee's in the classrooms, ants, flies, ect...But regardless, the ghost mantis at the end seemed to be the most efficient. ^3^ Nice video!
There's this deep sea shrimp that strikes amazingly fast, so fast that it boils the water around it and cause a shockwave that also will kill prey if not the initial strike (which is rare)
Smackan no tyler there said strike so it must be mantis shrimp cause it's the one that strikes amazingly fast and the shock wave causes light and electrical impulses :D
Once a praying mantis which was giant flew into our house and we have a blind dog who caught it and stomped on it but the mantis attacked the dog so we had to trap it and throw it away The mantis was massive
Try throwing a mantis into a spiders web & watching the poor thing get wrapped up! a big beautiful yellow and black (Garden spider) web becoming its meal :) . I didn't have slow mo camera with me, but boy was I watching intently!! it would look awesome in slow mo i bet. I did this back in 1998 age 25. I was bored that day obviously. they put on a good show for me!! love you work guys keep it up
How did you guys get into this business? I shot some videos at 240fps at a reduced res and it's very fun, but how does someone get into something as specific as high speed shooting professionally? It's one of those hobbies you can't really have without a $40k camera lying around.
i always sort of hated manis, it was on my tennis racket in my garage, and i picked up the racket and it thaught my hand was a different organism and put two scrapes on my hand
I was at mini golf the other day and they was a baby one so i put it ok a flowers and a bee cane by and it killed that thing it stopped moving in like a second it was so cool
Praying mantis... My soul animal. Been studying them for 30 years and they still fascinate me.
The third one IMPALED the cricket, badass to the bone!
you should have included the species gongylus gongylodes or violin mantids. they typically only eat flying insects. slow motion footage of one grabing a fly out of the air would be unreal.
I had 2 mantids as pets! Stunning insects!
what mantises? i have 5 different species
I don't know what species I had, I can't for the life of me remember their sientific names :P
Talon I am getting a giant Asian soon. I have a ghost.
Jill Stassie what’s wrong with saying mantids? That’s what they are called as an intire group. Mantis is actually a particular species of mantid, although most do have the common name of “______ mantis” 🙂
Striking when u least expect it SMACK!
the aqua-colored one looked confused as to why the cricket was so ready to die(0 3 0)
Praying Mantisses are so awesome :D
2:17 Right into the eye. Ouch!
And people say aliens don't exist?
The true aliens are Katydids. Leaf bugs suck.
+marceline5
When I went to Mexico, I saw a dead one, stuck to a guy's sandal.
JESUS that scared the hell out of me.
These things are like flesh eating aliens
It's really weird how it reminds us of an alien, while we haven't seen one :)
reb1138 they are not aliens they look like it but are no so in that case aliens don't exist
The music playing during the close up kills really suits the praying mantis.
Well...bugs are almost always able to lift more than their own weight. I believe the only thing restricting their size is levels of oxygen, explaining why bigger insects are found in less polluted areas
LMFAO the first grab. Butterclaw mantis. He dropped the cricket like 3 times! hahahaha
I seriously thought they were more precise and more lethal than that. Not that I'm disappointed, after all they play alot on speed and surprise. Yet I was expecting a bit more from these creatures.

It's nice to see you actually write their scientific names correctly. Well done!
I will never forget the video of a mantis eating a lizard. Scarred me for life
Black background and better lighting would have worked alot better, but cool any way..
Saw a bright green one catch a bee out of the air as it was about to land on a Lavender flower once and it just casually held it out and ate it from the head down.

Honeysucklebommie You forgot me mention Austrailia. :D
Any more predator action? Snake strikes? Frogfish gulping? Kingfisher diving?
you barely blow out the candle, Chris Brown punch would shatter the candle and the camera
I had a pet mantis and one day a bigger mantis ate him :( the next day he had nothing but his head and legs :'( r.i.p Mr.Snapper my first pet T^T
😂
Did you adopt the bigger one? He earned his place, u know...
*JUST KIDDING!! JUST KIDDING!!*
The bigger one was a female and they just mated
@@0bstolerance If that is true, at least he died happy...
_MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!_
_o o f_
Right, so we have a few to be getting on with eh...
Pretty awesome. I can't even see my mantis catch them sometimes.
Also that bit at the end of a waste of time haha.
It's like the Apex Predator of Bugs!
prey mantis was the first bug i held and now its my favorite animal/bug
mantis catch cricket ...good video.
Thanks for replying! I am glad they are not poisonous.
they creep me out so much. imagine a dog sized mantis..we would all live underground
One mantis which was massive attacked our blind dog
gonna get my heavy machine gun and machete
Baki vs 6ft mantis
We would all carry firearms everywhere....all the time.....
I'm astonished at how they just grab a bug and just start chewing away. Imagine being force-fed through a low powered paper shredder! Absolutely brutal!
Another great vid. Preying Mantises are amazing creatures.
Times for the mantis strikes
Cameroon Mantis: 0.057 seconds
Griffin Mantis: 0.039 seconds
Egyptian Mantis: 0.031 seconds
Ghost Mantis: 0.027 seconds
The Mantis almost looks like an elongated Grasshopper to me.
Makes alot of sense, thank you for connecting the dots for me!
First one was slow and uncoordinated.
ghost mantis looks pretty cool
I hadn't realized that mantises could actually stab their prey... I thought it was all in the sudden spiky vice grip, but you can see more than one of these strikes, the prey is harpooned right through the exoskeleton
I'm so grateful these things aren't eight feet tall.
I feel like a flick would be much faster and much more effective at putting out a candle than a punch.
I love watching my praying mantises eat it’s pretty cool

Everything in slow mow is cool
Damn I thought the ghost mantis was invisible until I realized that the "leaf" on the underside of the branch was it 😂
good mantis video....
you should slow mo a mantis shrimp!
I put one of these in a jar of vintages and it won't die! ( science project )
The arms of a Mantis remind me of the Toe Biter water Bug.
The mantis is like: you wanna hug? You wanna hug? I will give you one hard hug
The bug is like:nooooo I don't want a hug let go of meee!!!!
It's cruel enough to carry out a praying mantis attack speed test, don't you think so, guys?
I remember in elementary school at recess we would go into the field and look for a praying mantis. We would never hurt them but just pick them up and look at them.
Hannah Bickford me too, I once found a mantis nymph on the canteen table
Everytime the Mantis attacks I can just imagine Scorpion saying "Get over here!"
It just wanted a hug :(
should've gotten a bark mantis, they're some of the fastest ones as they are active hunters.
no animals were harmed in the making of this video
I like the green one
I think about that all the time in fact I write a book about bugs being life sized
That was the ghost mantis... yep.
awesome!
04:54 Oh look! a stop smoking advert!
mantis strike and says free hugs :D
I love mantis bugs...X3 Though a few children at my school when I was younger where torturing one that they had found once. -_- I had to take the thing away from them, and from then on became known as the bug-whisperer...They'd call me to take care of bee's in the classrooms, ants, flies, ect...But regardless, the ghost mantis at the end seemed to be the most efficient. ^3^ Nice video!
You can see fast things with a lot of details!
nice Portmanteau
those three little dots on the top of its head are also eyes.
Nice video.
There's this deep sea shrimp that strikes amazingly fast, so fast that it boils the water around it and cause a shockwave that also will kill prey if not the initial strike (which is rare)
Oh yes I saw that one once.
Pistol shrimp
morganmichaelp it is pistol shrimp a mantis shrimp have the fastest and most painful punch and it is faster then a bullet
Smackan no tyler there said strike so it must be mantis shrimp cause it's the one that strikes amazingly fast and the shock wave causes light and electrical impulses :D
Do a video of the mantis eating too!
We're available in more than just the UK, but due to various rights issues we’re not available everywhere quite yet. Sorry about that.
SIMON AND LEWIS JOINING TO MAKE A VIDEO WITH YOU!?!
Once a praying mantis which was giant flew into our house and we have a blind dog who caught it and stomped on it but the mantis attacked the dog so we had to trap it and throw it away
The mantis was massive
Guys, awesome work! Can you do a parkour practitioners (traceurs) slowmotion movements. That should be nice too.
Try throwing a mantis into a spiders web & watching the poor thing get wrapped up! a big beautiful yellow and black (Garden spider) web becoming its meal :) . 1:00 Cricket: Come at me bro! come at me bro! come at me- SHIT!
OMG YOGSCAST O,O YAY! :D
At the end was Lewis and Simon!!!!!
good videos just need more time to click the links at the end of the videos before auto play

I hate praying mantises. I don't know why, but I just hate almost all bugs. but like with the spiderbro, if they don't bother me I won't bother them.
Would of liked to have seen more of the mantis'. They are amazing.
you should keep all the mantis as pets.
VERY interesting! Thanks you guys. :) Bugs, not drugs... ;)
I have only seen these once
The cool leaf like praying mantis is a ghost mantis Wich I own as a pet.
Ah I see what you mean now, they already actually did as shown at the end of the video (regarding my previous comment)
They have compound eyes, but it also looks like they have pupils...
Pseudopupils or as the video shows Fovea the "sweet spot".
I think his arms weren't that accurate as he was aiming for its leg to rip it off
Rocky punches: Strike Time N/A
I have had hundreds of mantids. I think the fastest is the spiny flower mantis, pseudocreobotra wahlbergii
Mantis scare me the most! :/
Is strike time also temperature dependent?
suabian yes
More mantis vids
i always sort of hated manis, it was on my tennis racket in my garage, and i picked up the racket and it thaught my hand was a different organism and put two scrapes on my hand
see you did great with the punch, what happened with the bugs?
Who's the genius that decided on a white background?
Instead of talcum powder, you should use powdered milk... much better results :)
You should used corn starch instead of talc. You might get a fireball. :)
@ 1:41 You need to cut the awkward parts where the one guy explains to the other what they obviously have both together been Googling about.
I was at mini golf the other day and they was a baby one so i put it ok a flowers and a bee cane by and it killed that thing it stopped moving in like a second it was so cool
IT LOOKS LIKE THE BUG VERSION OF A ALIEN CREEPY!!!!
Wow I never seen a mantis that grey, it's looks like an alien! What type of mantis is that??
Griffin mantis
Awsome footage! (Y)
Ever tried to catch the Somalian pocket thefts? Sneaky skills! Crazy fast!
