Bare Soil vs. Mulch (and what about WEEDS?) || Black Gumbo

- You've probably heard the saying among gardeners: bare soil is bad soil. But is it true? I've known some gardeners, Old-Timers especially, who never mulch their garden. What if your garden is so large that you can't mulch it? Traditional row gardens don’t usually have mulch. In this video I will show you a side by side comparison in my own garden. I've left some on mulched, and I have heavily mulched other parts of the garden. I'll show you how to care for the one that was left without mulch.

Love to see Phoebe running around. Great content Scott
I only recently found your channel, and glad I did. I needed this video, as I love a tidy garden but sometimes I just can't keep it that way! I'm going tomorrow to get a stirrup hoe in hopes of finding it more efficient than a regular hoe. Thank you. Please keep the helpful information coming!
Awe I love seeing Phoebe !!! So cute ☺!
Great video! I can testify the weeds can help as they serve to trap moisture from escaping so the soil stays moist where the bare soil gets dry and crusty. They provide shade and a microclimate for my melons I grew a few years ago. The plants without weeds around them got to dry and hot and withered, while the wild ones produced some fruit. Now if they get crazy they got to go, like if they're smothering or way to close or in any way taking over as the alpha dominant plant. Lol
I like that stirrup weeder! We have a wheelhoe that works fantastic for in between rows but I still remove them by hand within the row. That looks super handy!
I used wood mulch last year and when my plants were done, I used your screen to clean my raised bed soil. Saved the mulch but not putting it back in. I watch my beds when watering and pull my few weeds at the same time. I have less weed/snails this year than when I had mulch last year
I use leaf mold compost for mulch. As a result, I fight a weed or two but the compost is so beneficial that I consider it a fair trade. And yes, that rain and the one this morning were so welcomed. ‘Bout time. Thanks for another good video Scott.
Hi Scott. Just got one of the hoes from Ross and they are a game changer. No more getting on my knees to pull weeds. And I loved the rain we got Sunday. Have a great night.
You confirmed the things about weeds that I've been thinking about like certain bugs will eat up weeds and leave the plants you like alone. Thank you.
I have one of those. But until know I have only known it as a Hula Hoe. I think that was what was printed on it. I think anyhow. Enjoyable video. I have come to expect nothing less. If you don't cover it, God will.
Love your info for years. I always used hay but your video forced me to change. Starting this year cardboard and wood chips.Really happy with cost of big bags of chips.
We finally got rain, been very dry. I had a hard time with my corn and beans half the rows came up. I was waiting for the rain then the cardboard and mulch will go down. Thanks for your video have a great day. Give phoebe a cool drink
Very nice! I actually used the grass clippings in the mulch bed before I put down the card board and mulch. I actually used brown paper bags to cover the gaps between the cardboard. I have not had any weeds to pull up yet.
Glad Phoehe is doing well also!
I always mulch , usually with arbor woodchips because it has leaves as well, but I use it after it breaks down at least halfway and thinly because of snails. I love that it breaks down and adds to my soil and I don't want my soul to be bare. And in the fall, if I don't fall plant, I put more on top to break down til I plant again.
I seem to run out of cardboard and mulch one a week. what I don't run out of is weeds. God bless & keep growing.
I recently heard a saying that the earth is modest and she will cover herself if we don’t (with mulch).
Thanks I do the cardboard early and kill all the weeds works well then layer more if needed gonna try your tarp trick ... Great video 🤠🤠🤠🤠
Thanks for the reminder, I’m definitely overdue to mulch my tomatoes!
Great info as always. Thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness, nearly 10k views in the first day now. I'm remembering the first few videos you made, I made a point of telling you that the channel would grow because you're real, nothing fancy, just down to earth what people want, oh my, the channel certainly has. I think I might think about getting a stirrup hoe myself, although, I have very few in my back garden... The front one is different, couch grass creeping in from the lawn, but I have plans for that, deep galvanized lawn edging. Keep producing videos - it is a good provider. 😇
Thanks, you've been here a long time and I appreciate you.
Nice video?, I do like this video. Got to get My wife to watch these videos she wants me watch then show her what she needs to know. I'm more of a cardboard with mulch kind of guy , do once and forget. But she's is providing the Labor. 17/10 today.f toLabor did get the tomatoes, sunflowers in. She and her sister did all the planting and weeding. Great job on the video SCOTT .
Another great and informative video. I hate bindweed and now I know what nutsedge looks like. I lived at one time at a place that camel thorns, not sure if that is the right name but they are the worst weed I have dealt with. Phoebe looks great! TFS 👍
My parents have used grass clippings for their garden my entire life. Works great.
I am doing this this year to save a little money, and I can already tell it's helping.
I'm just south of Tampa, I couldn't believe that whole system missed me, barely a drop of rain, depressing!
If that plant you were questioning has a purple stalk , it is probably poke salat. Good eating when cooked correctly.
Hi 🐾🐾 Phoebe 💕🐾🐾
I do leave some dandelions but we haven't other invasive weeds to worry about. Now we have garlic mustard all through the grass at the side of the house. instead of mulch we're trying to put down ground covers. Forget me nots are easily pulled out and transferred elsewhere when your ready to plant.
Ah yes, the constant war against weeds. Neither of my neighbors take care of their yard, so my yard is becoming a challenge. As a result, even my container garden suffers with weeds. This year I added an inexpensive hardwood mulch to the pots after planting, and my lower back is appreciative. I also raised my pots up a couple of inches using cement pavers which... believe it or not has lowered all kinds of issues. My over-wintered peppers started producing early (my first one now has a tip of color!) And my new seedlings (I grew from seed) have peppers on the bush. I've survived the "annual bluegrass" attack on my pots. Once the heat gets here in the low country I won't have to worry about weeds until early fall.
Thanks for sharing 🙏 😎 🏖 🏝
I understand what your saying I use mulch when I can get ahold of It
Aww hello precious girl ❤️
I usually use wood chip much but in my cucurbit beds the squash bugs use it to hide and it can get overwhelming. I read cedar chips repel them, that true? Or any other squash bug-deterring mulch advised? I do a lot of interplanting and that does seem to help but not enough when I use mulch.
Cedar does repel bugs a bit, so its a good choice.
Nutsedge has tuberous roots that produce nutlets that get left behind when you pull up the “weed”. These reproduce and create more “weeds”. But, they are sweet and their nutty flavor makes them ideal for a multitude of recipes, from soups to sweets. Chufa can be eaten raw or cooked.
Thank you.
Scott, how do you handle a bed mulched with cardboard and hardwood mulch for second plantings and next year? Is the material broken down enough that it does not matter or do you have to pull it out to work the soil and reapply the mulch layers? My beds are fully on drip irrigation so water is not as much of an issue as in the past. Also good to see Phoebe is doing so well and her fur is almost fully grown back in!
I pull back the mucl and cut a hole in the cardboard to plant or sow there.
garden loaf 😂😂👌
I got bad news for you my friend. It's only May, just wait until July and August.
I allow a certain amount of weeds in certain places too
Great garden. I am in Central Texas and I have had raised beds but this year I'm expanding to the land behind my house. I have black clay soil . Mulch doesn't seem to work for me as it tends to harbor bugs. Is this normal?? Or am I doing something wrong??
Depends on the kinds of bugs. I don't notice many bad bugs in the mulch but sometimes it invites snails.
Another question. Everything seems to be doing great in my garden but after that storm the flowers at the top of my tomato plants turned black. Do you have any ideas??
Hmm no clue, maybe mold?
For weeds right next to a plant you want to keep you can use a circle hoe aka carrot hoe. I have found a butter knife or flat file will also work.
Are the sprawling tomatoes the Everglades variety?
No they are my Edox hybrids. They sprawl if you let them.
I've always wondered: is it better to let the weeds grow or have bare soil? Which is the lesser evil🤔
Gotta find a cheap source of mulch. Grass clippings are pretty good.
@@BlackJesus8463 where I live, people bag their leaves and I load up 3 yards at a time. Tree service brought me at least a 100 yds or more for free.
@@michaelshmaruk7485 That a sweet deal.
Hey Febbie
Scott,
Is there a brand of hula hoe that you'd recommend?
No, just any decent one. I don't even know what brand mine is.
If the rase bed was done right . The problem should never happen at least 90 percent. I have rase beds and no problem with weeds .
I'm guilty I'm one of the no dig no mulch gardener.
I thought that morning glories grew sweet potatoes. ?!
Not wild morning glories.
@@ScottHead Ahhh. Thanks. (smile)
Your weeds are protecting the tomatoes from the sun.
I HATE BINDWEED! I HATE BINDWEED!
