I got into metal via classic and prog, so bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath and Dream Theater. A year later I came across Ne Obliviscaris, which were my gateway into extreme metal

I got into metal thanks to a multitude of popular bands (FFDP, Linkin Park, Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, Rammstein, some others too), but the real breakpoint to me was when I started listening to Sabaton, and eventually heard their cover of Metallicas "For Whom the Bell Tolls", I still remember thinking something like "wow, so this is what great metal music sounds like". Then I went down the Metallica rabbit hole, it was my favorite band, and then I started discovering more and more different and heavy stuff.
It happened like 3 years ago. Nowadays I am primarily a fan of black metal, but enjoy most of the other genres metal has to offer, and i managed to get into some other genres of music along the way.

I'm a classically-trained music (violin, viola), so I first got into prog due to the musicianship. I then found Deep Purple when they reformed back in the late 80s, and that clicked. Later someone loaned me Iron Maiden's Live After Death which I loved thanks to the mixture of music and imagery. Metal also appealed as I love things macabre (early horror authors and filmmakers). Then in the 90s I started purchasing the Century Music samplers and the Nuclear Blast DVD video compilations. Been hooked ever since.

I got into metal around a year ago through NateWantsToBattle, who does covers of alternative rock songs, anime covers (I don't watch anime) and songs based on videogames (I'm not a gamer). Some of his songs based on Five Nights at Freddy's just sound like normal rock songs, so I played one at a drinking session with my university rock society. One of the older members said it was 'metalcore' and 'not his thing'. That was how I discoveres metalcore was, in fact, my thing. That's how I got into metalcore, and then metal in general. I was 20 years old 😂

Amazing way to get into it! Love Nates content and funnily enough the genre I voice act in is nerdcore, the same one he makes content for haha. And I love me some metalcore!

linkin park -> avenged -> metallica/pantera -> slayer -> Death for me. Black metal came a bit later into the picture. And from there I started to branch out into little bit of everything exploring on my own. I kind of slowly and naturally worked my way into it.

LP was massive to me! I'd put Breaking Benjamin up there, too. But that last part is exactly where I was at.

I never knew metal would be a huge part of my life that I was missing. It's been a few years and here I am today finding appreciation in all the subgenres metal has to offer. It's crazy to think what really sparked my interest is a best friend of mine who showed me the song Metallica - Turn the Page (my favorite track ever) because as they said "it reminds me of you", from there they took me on a ride through various bands and genres where I would eventually make my own discoveries. The world of metal truly helped me get through a dark place in life, who knew such a genre can be so brutal yet so damn beautiful. There's so much metal has to offer and there quite literally is something for everyone, absolutely no shame in liking any of the subgenres.
Someday I sure hope to share the same experience I had when first being exposed to the depths of metal!

At 12 & 13 (80's) I started listening to rock, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, then Beastie Boys, Genesis, Mike Oldfield, RHCP, much of it inspired by popular movies sound tracks at the time & MTV with plenty of 80's & 90's heavy metal mixed in there. Last 5-10 years I rediscovered rock & metal - def have a preference for Prog Metal but I love a bit of classic metal, black metal, Metalcore, Nu Metal and lots of other sub-genres that I wouldn't know how to name.

I have no business being a metal head. I grew up on country music, the beach boys, & Sinatra. My teen friends listed to rap or punk. Somehow i discovered metal and it just kinda made sense. I always enjoyed orchestra music, thats the only connection i can think of. Now my best friends son is getting into music & since ill never have a kid, im passing on my musical tastes to him in small doses. I figure id never teach a child my beliefs. Let em figure shit out themselves. With the exception of, be a good person for its own sake, & metal is the best music. Hope you had a good Easter Tempest. I was on day 16 of a 20 day work week so didn't get a chance to watch your Easter video. Hope all is well. Glad ur back. 🤘🥸🤘 🍻

Nailed it. I personally used to listen to classical pieces with not overly complex melodies, turns out im into melodeath. Also turns out I love it when bands push the boundaries of whats considered a digestabpe format for a song (yippiy Mudvayne)

I believe the reason why I aquired my taste for metal may be partly genetic, my mom was a big fan of AC/DC growing up, I know that AC/DC isn't really metal and is more akin to something like hard rock which is a bit similar to metal in some ways, another reason may be that I've heard plenty of rock/metal songs growing up via games, shows, movies, videos, etc: and I've always kind of gravitated towards those kinds of songs because I've always loved how electric guitars sound and the intensity that many metal songs have.
