China's SHOCKING! Rise | Then and Now | 1922-2022 | 中国伟大复兴与现状 | 1930-2022
Since China began to open up and reform its economy in 1978, GDP growth has averaged almost 10 percent a year, and more than 800 million people have been lifted out of poverty. There have also been significant improvements in access to health, education, and other services over the same period.
China is now an upper-middle-income country. It will be important going forward that poverty alleviation efforts increasingly shift to address the vulnerabilities faced by the large number of people still considered poor by the standards of middle-income countries, including those living in urban areas.
China’s high growth based on resource-intensive manufacturing, exports, and low-paid labor has largely reached its limits and has led to economic, social, and environmental imbalances. Reducing these imbalances requires shifts in the structure of the economy from manufacturing to high value services, and from investment to consumption.
Over the past few years, growth has moderated in the face of structural constraints, including declining labor force growth, diminishing returns to investment, and slowing productivity. The challenge going forward is to find new drivers of growth while addressing the social and environmental legacies of China’s previous development path.
China is a growing influence on other developing economies through trade, investment, and ideas. Many of the complex development challenges that China faces are relevant to other countries, including transitioning to a new growth model, rapid aging, building a cost-effective health system, and promoting a lower carbon energy path.
Following real GDP growth of 8.1 percent in 2021, growth is projected to slow to 5.0 percent in 2022. The forecast reflects rising headwinds: Domestic demand has slowed, and the global economic environment has worsened significantly with the war in Ukraine. In addition, COVID incursions have become more frequent and widespread. China is currently experiencing the largest COVID wave since the end of the national lockdown in March 2020.
In the face of these shocks, the authorities have announced a significant loosening of policy. The 2022 budget leaves room for a fiscal boost of up to 2.7 percent of GDP. Risks are firmly on the downside and include a stronger than expected global slowdown, a longer lasting commodity price shock, and more severe financial stress among property developers. China also remains at risk of re-escalating COVID outbreaks, which could lead to significant economic disruption. In a downside scenario, economic growth could slow to 4.0 percent in 2022.
An important element of such a shift is a reduction in the inequality of economic opportunities. The government has highlighted achieving common prosperity as a key economic objective but has not yet defined specific policies to reach this goal. More progressive taxation and a strengthened social protection system could protect the most vulnerable, reduce inequality and help boost private consumption as a driver of growth.

What they have consistently forgotten to tell Chinese people is that for three decades after the founding of the PRC in 1949, the CCC kept hundreds of millions in poverty. It was only when they realised that they had made disastrous and inhumane policies that they granted ordinary Chinese citizens basic freedoms, 改革开放-to own property, to start a business, to change jobs, to move one’s place of residence-then and only then that the Chinese people lifted themselves out of poverty. They have been dancing to their own tunes ever since, 吹牛。
That is the change you see when a government invests in their people and infrastructure. Not just in military. The absolute ridiculousness of the American government spending billions in corrupt countries while their own people is suffering. Thanks again for bringing us these amazing videos Alex.

When Western powers like America, Great Britain, France, and Spain acquired their economic and military muscle, what did they do with it? They colonialized distant lands and enslaved people.
But China's rise since 1980, over four decades ago, has been peaceful. So the increasing concern of some people reflect their *projection* - they project how the Western powers behaved onto China. Why do they do this?
They do this because of *political bigotry* - they oppose China's system of governance.
They do this because of ignorance - they do not know that China, in over 2,000 years, has never expanded its empire towards the West. Look at a map of the Qing Dynasty, the greatest extent of imperial China. It looks remarkably like that of today's China! China has never been imperialist like the Western powers.
So why are they concerned?

There is no precedent in human history that had a civilization grow this fast...simply mind blowing. The architecture is amazing and modern and that high speed rail is quite the achievement too. As China builds modern structures I just keep reading in US news about constant killings and shooting. Good grief...a family in Iowa went camping and was all killed by a young lunatic with an assault rifle. There is a gun sickness here like no other place in the world...sad. wish we could focus on making people's lives better like high speed rail, modern infrastructure and updated cities.

Travelled almost 60 different countries in past 30 more years. I have been admired how modern advanced the western cities, but not since few years ago, even the 3 tier cities in China are more modern, advance, safe, clean convenient....

Alex, another extraordinary piece. The choice of music, the cutting, and the timing of the cuts to the music are outstanding. The way of using motion from cut to cut is outstanding. The minimal use of narration and where it was used was very nice, from the setup in the beginning to once in a while coming in with the narration to give a tidbit of info. Once the CPC and KMT held peace talks in Chongqing, hoping to form a coalition government headed by the two parties. But KMT under Chiang Kai-shek took the opportunity to prepare for war and then launched an attack on the CPC, civil war broke out.
However, the KMT lost the war. In fact, until the CPC attack on Nanjing (the Battle of Crossing the River), Mao Zedong gave Chiang the opportunity to still form a coalition government if the KMT surrendered, but Chiang failed to make a decision.

When Chiang Kai-shek was alive, he refused to be independent. Among the older generation of Taiwanese, they still know that history, but because of the revision of textbooks, most young Taiwanese do not know and no longer recognize that history.

Just wish any youtuber could interview Prof. William Brown or Bill Brown who's been living in China since 1988 (if my memory works well) and he was an ex-American Navy or military who was deployed in Taiwan back around end of 70s. Imagine he sold off everything in America and moved with his wife and children to China without knowing what to expect. His story will be an eye opener.

Great video! Should have made it longer or you can make a second or third part which includes other areas of China. I think Xinjiang, as part of the old Silk Road, would be a good place to compare old and new. Btw, i got interested in China because of the old Silk Road, not the web site but the historical one, and get to know the country which is totally not the West has painted it to be.

During the 1980s, the NHK of Japan made a great TV documentary on the old Silk Road and the doco's video footages are pretty much public on youtube now. One can also order the accompanying books (6 in all) from Japan.

Especially when you look at South Korea and Singapore and others can help predict what China will look like in the near future. Hey Randy we changed it up a bit for this video. It took a long time to find the correct footage but we did it in the end. Yes we continue to get people on the channel that only talk politics. I know Guangzhou will be in the end, although it ranked only no.6 in 2022. The skyline of Guangzhou is awesome among all Chinese Cities, the same top level of Shanghai.

I don't know whether Joseph Hackett is accurate in his characterisation of the Chinese state. I often wonder why we can't just talk of Chinese development as a positive thing in human history. After all if we have to dig into all developed economies we'll encounter unpleasant stuff.. Imagine if we start talking of the near extermination of Native Americans.. African slaves in cotton plantations in the USA.... racial discrimination.. disinfrachasement of freed slaves... how would one look at America
