the "mother" is a metaphor for society, children being forced to obey rules and become brainwashed. Mother society abuses it's children for not thinking the way she wants them to think. The son hitting the mother is society fighting against these rules and turning aggressive against it
bump
Happy to see someone get it.
Aaron 102 YES!!! I absolutely agree with you!! You get it!!! 💥🤘
You're exactly right
Up!
Doctor: Can you cough for me?
Patient: OH WAH AH AH AH
Doctor: It seems that you have come down with the sickness
This should be top comment
And then he says “no but really you have a life threatening respiratory disease”
Wow you actually made me laugh. Thank You!
10/10
That actually made me laugh, thanks for joke.
The look of surprise on your face when it went dark was priceless.
It was! Lol
Omg his face was like "wait.....did I just hear that????"
Fucking priceless haha
I was crouched at my desk for is face expression lol... hysterical...
i was waiting for the reaction when that part was coming up haha
Song begins.
ALEX: [vibing, headbanging]
ALEX DURING BREAKDOWN: O_O
ALEX AFTER BREAKDOWN: [confused headbanging]
I love that he stopped chewing his snickers.
@@Hamletfa53cuz he was so shocked 😂
Me: why would the official video be shorter? What would they cut-
*Remembers that ONE part of the song*
Me: *Oh*
Ehhh Ohhh which one was that?

I don't think I've ever heard the full version of this song until now.
6:10 all I could think about was “he’s not ready”
they never are
🤣🤣
I thought THE SAME HAHAHAHA
🤣
The Birds My Word haha I just rewatched his reaction 😂😂😂😂😂
The facial definition of, "Well, that took a turn..."
Sharp trip south.
6:15
I've listened to it more times than I can count, and I'm still never prepared for it
"it's a definite Playlist song... His eyes at 6:45"
I almost pissed myself laughing
Same dude....... same. He looked absolutely terrified LMAO
Same his face was priceless
I was crying at that point because I was laughing so hard at his expression lmfao
for real, his face was funny as hell
I was so happy when he said no censored bullshit. I'm like, we about to now if he was faking or not. Nope, he is authentic.
I love your reactions to Disturbed! Priceless. I'm a 66 year old grandmother and have listened to disturbed forever. Coming from addiction myself, quite simply put, being abused brings up a rage that is hard to describe. Not all who are abused go on to abuse their children or whoever but can certainly understand the rage. Some do become violent though. Raised in an abusive family, and going on to become an addict/ alcoholic (in recovery now for 33 years), I can still identify with that dark place. This music actually helps to quell that in a more constructive way than say, breaking stuff.
Amen. For me it describes me perfectly in my teen years.. What Alex Hefner forgets that in the break down it starts with... And when I dream... Not literally beating his mom but in his dreams he does. I lived that for many years because of her abuse. I am 53 years old and it still effects me sometimes. I also am a recovering addict been in recovery for 20 years. Thank you for your words it's good to know I am not the only one
The analysis at the top of the comments- about metaphors for society and youth... kinda feels like it's coming from someone who _didn't_ experience actual abuse, and so fails to fully relate. Ironically, the song confused Alex, and that confusion is EXACTLY what the song is about. The "demon in me" is the darkness that arises from abuse, and which conflicts with the healthy person one wants to be.
You’re like the coolest grandma! The fact that you appreciate this music is really awesome- I just enjoy hearing these interesting stories and the people behind it:) (this is coming from a 15 year old by the way), I really hope you’re doing ok by now
@@randpierce3278 me too. Been clean for like 6 years ish now. And music like those was my entire teen years because my parents were abusive. I'm still slow to trust people and tailor a long time to get comfortable enough be vulnerable. Music like this is literally the only reason I survived. And I do mean that because id sit there with a razor blade in my hand and listen to the same songs over and over again, thinking "fuck this, if im gonna die I just wanna hear this one more time first." Then when I was a junkie, odd listen to this same music from my teen years on repeat just to get through the million times I was dope sick. There's a few handfuls of bands that genuinely helped me survive
I’m 60 this year and I LOVE metal and hard rock. This song is awesome.
this is what the lead singer, david driaman says about the meaning of the song- 'speaks about the eternal struggle of the individual against the mother culture of society that is constantly trying to beat the child struggling for independence and individuality into submission.'
Read this @Alex Hefner
stephanie reeves his meaning blew my personal one out the water haha I'll use both tho each one can drive you into sickness
LMFAO the mommy part had me in tears laughing at the reaction. The whole song I just kept saying... Wait for it.... LMFAO
did the same
The mommy part I did not get back then ...pls believe I thought it was some sick demonic shit going on
Harvester Of Sorrow 😄😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣! Too funny bruh!!
Problem is thats not the original xD. Luckily
Same! When he said that "playlist song for sure", I got all giddy wondering if it was the album version, or the cut down version.
Ah, nuts...spilled my popcorn...
I love how he was so bewildered by the Mother rant and cautiously goes back to head bopping.
“Cautiously head bopping” is the greatest description ever and it’s so accurate 😂
I was patiently awaiting the reaction to the breakdown and I was not disappointed 🤣🤣
Hey it's good that u were patient, ur a polite human being... Oh wait no ur not u watch porn and u will admit it HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

Choosing 'Down With the Sickness' before 'The Sound of Silence' to hear their "true" sound first
Choosing a lyric video over the official video to not get a radio edit
Damn right, Alex! Doing it all right :D
PlexyPanda I appreciate that! Gotta give y’all what you want ❤️🤘🏼
Alex Hefner :D :D :D
Agreed. I would choose "Stricken" or "Voices" or countless other songs...but DO NOT listen to Sound of Silence first. "Sound..." is a transcendent piece of music...but it's NOT "Disturbed"....
hell yeah respect
Agreed. "Sound of Silence" is amazingly done.
I personally would've like a bit less shouting near the end, but I can't deny that they took a song that is about as far away from what they usually do, and gave it their own spin. While still showing respect to the original.
Dude looks more and more like a metal head each time i tune in! Hes switching team's
Welcome to the dark side!
That's what happens when you discover something with superior lyricism and musicianship
@@jmcb5215 that's hilarious
because people are only allowed to like one thing apparently.
What team does he belong to ?
My first thought when you said you wanted the full experience was “uh oh”
First 2/3 of the song - Alex: "This is dope"
Last 1/3 of the song - Alex: "WTF! That got dark"
Alex looked so happy then he heard David Drainman sing about his mom. And his face changed slowly.
Definitely the best part of the video!!
Just wait... was probably my primary thought throughout.
Andrew Olesen Mine too. I was waiting for that part.
I knew when the mommy bit came Alex wouldn’t have liked it and I laughed so hard at his reaction
FoodIt3ms it's not actually about his mom though, he says it in an interview
"This is such a playlist song!" Couple of seconds later "👀" 😂😂😂
"The song is actually a metaphor for government and the child represents the citizens"
Even if it WAS about society/govt/whatever, and wasn't about an abusive person, the lyrics and principle still apply. Abusers are twisted. Abusers are terrible people. Being a parent does not get them a free pass. Abusers deserve to have whatever they dish out inflicted back upon them. Abusers deserve to be destroyed. Abusers deserve no mercy.
And to be fair if you didn't grow up in an abusive home you may not have the same respect for your mother. We give the title a certain amount of respect but that doesn't mean everyone who holds the title is worthy of that respect. Same goes for any title.
Dog eat Dog world, find your pack/tribe.
6:11 -- Yeah... I was waiting the whole song to see your reaction to that bridge. The fact that you were getting into it so much made it all the better.
Yup
Lol and now you know why there's a shorter version
Yes, absolutely. I get David's message with the song, but for everyday listening (especially when introducing teenagers to Disturbed) I prefer the shorter version.
@@Kayjee17 definitely understand your position...but I figure I was unexpectedly broken in by the psycho abusive version, newbies should be too. I mean, they are Disturbed after all...
The radio near me about a decade ago did play a shorter version and it was mostly uncensored.
Both the "Ah Shit" and "Fucker" said in the chorus weren't censored.
The only thing that was was done was it jumped right from the last "And When I Dream" right to the end of the "Talky Part", skipping it entirely.
Within the last few years with all the PC people crying, they went back and re-edited it.
Everything that was allowed is now censored, but the entire talky part is put back in (only f-bombs and shit censored).
So near me, they don't play the shorter version anymore, but it's still more censored (kinda a shame).
Personally, I'd accept the shorter version that it used to be before if there was no other censoring.
You have the same youtube pic as my xbox one pic XD
@@Kayjee17 damn, I was a teenager when this came out. I think I was 13 or 14.

Shelby yeah theres some bloody good old Disturbed songs.
This song has deep meaning to me, my own mother was manipulative and abusive to me until the day she disowned me. So this song hits me deep
Holy shit, your expression when it went off was amazing. I haven't laughed so hard through this entire quarantine
This is their arguably most 'famous' song, but definitely not their best imho.
I highly recommend:
Inside The Fire (about his girlfriend who committed suicide)
Indestructable
Stricken
The Animal
Perfect Insanity
The Night
Haunted
Another Way To Die (About how humans are destroying the planet)
A few of my favorites
Stacy Schauls Agreed. And the metaphor makes the song seem more dark than their typically uplifting/empowering lyrics are. Stupify is off the same album and it's better than Sickness overall imo.
Stacy Schauls fuck yea draimans voice and lyrical style is just genius
100% Inside the Fire. That song is just so well put together.
Torn should be in this list :^
Droppin plates wasn’t terrible and imo better than down with the sickness but yeah I think stupify took the plate on that album
This is a quote about this song by the lead singer, David Draiman: "speaks about the eternal struggle of the individual against the mother culture of society that is constantly trying to beat the child struggling for independence and individuality into submission." Disturbed is solid band that really finds a way to be badass, 'heavy' and accesable for new metalheads, non metalheads. The singer is seriously good. Up there with the top metal clean vocalists, no doubt. I recommend you to listen to stricken by disturbed. I think you'll really like that one. You don't have to do a reaction to that one, since you already did Disturbed now.
I recommend December flower- In Flames. This is the same genre as Twilight of the thunder gods, but not Viking themed

He did it, 3 weeks ago ;-)
I just saw the video and recommended a different song now.
You wanted their typical sound, down with the sickness is definitely their sound
Now we know that he answer to the question : "How extreme do your lyrics have to be in order to freak out a hip hop dude?"
Nah em has some really extreme lyrics
Dude, you have to watch Stupify. Not should. HAVE TO. Its classic Disturbed.
I agree and try to play a live video of Stupify. If you want energy you definitely need to see one of their live shows. I saw them at Music as a Weapon V and it was awesome. One of the best birthday present I ever gotten lol.

Love that you did this first to get their real sound. Something I wish other reaction channels would do. Great content bro.
I love coming back to these earlier reactions, and think of how far you've come in listening to many different types of music. Still back when was , and is cool.

Well, she hasn't been much of a mother if she has been beating the living shit out of you. You don't own any respect or love to someone just because they are related to you if they have done nothing to deserve it. She's been so abusive that she's turned someone into a violent crazy person. You reap what you sow.

Exactly she became the victim of what she created
PlugInKali i agree
PlugInKali agreed fuckin like she will reap what she sews

It makes me very happy to see you so excited to hear this band. Alex, bro, if you ever get the opportunity, see them perform live. You will not regret nor forget it. Thanks again as always for the great content, man.
I guess from your reaction to the "mother" part, that you've probably had a good one...mother I mean... I assume she cared about you, took decent care of you, protected you the best way she could...Right? Some of us haven't had quite the same experience...
That’s not what that part of the song is abt

It's absolutely commendable to hear what a group "is about" first *and then* what is relevant right now just for the views, shows a true care for the music and interest in a band. Congratualtions.
Your face during the my favorite part of the song was priceless!!! I needed that laugh thank you so much 💕
Stupify is my favorite disturbed song. You should listen to that one on your own own time.
Did you see his face? He got soo disturbed...
No
Ow ah ah ah bruda
Geno - 515 He said it guys, He said the thing!
Lol cringey yet HILARIOUS
So so happy you found the uncensored version to listen to as the "Mother" outro is cut from the song and the song is SO SO famous with 80-90% of it's fanbase never having heard the Mother bit and therefore still not knowing the real meaning behind the song. It's crazy how that one part changes the meaning or what you take from the song(the vibe) and to think that most people have never even heard that part
As soon as he said the music video was shorter i said to myself "theres a reason its shorter my dear boy"
The lead singer David Draiman is actally classically trained in opera. You'll see his range when you do Sound of Silence
Michael Tabor no, you don't really hear his range on that song.
Michael Tabor He does more vocally in songs like Never Again(if I'm remembering the right song.)
Lmao! He wasn't sure about headbanging after the dark part😂😂😂
I'm so happy you did the full song! Your reaction was amazing!
You are a hoot! Great critique! Glad you agree that Disturbed are awesome! (I love your signature too!) OOHHH AAHHH AAHHHH AAHHH!!!!!
His reactions to the mom part was hilarious
I was literally laughing out loud because I think we all felt exactly as he looked the first time we heard that part.
I about died with the instant drop in is face in that part hahahaha
I'm sooo glad you bypassed the sound of silence as EVERYONE has done a reaction. This is Disturbed as they are. As I tell my friends "get down with the sickness". David has an insane voice
You can tell this man has never been abused in his childhood or he would understand the lyrics of this song all to well.
Omg this song helped me get through any beating I used to get as a child. Like the aggression in his voice just calmed me down cause l left my anger in that one part so I’m happy you listened to the lyrics video and not the official one where that part is cut out.
Still wating for that Devil in i video to drop
it has to happen. i've been waiting for ages as well
It will one day...
that would be great
I still say he needs to see either ‘Psychosocial’ or ‘Dead Memories’ first. It helps some of the imagery in ‘The Devil in I’ make more sense.
Yaaaas
I always looked at is at that part that kind of worried you, directly follows..."and when I dream.....when I dream..." I always took that as him dreaming of how he'd push back, and that the rest of the song is all that hatred and negative energy turning him into something that he's not...maybe even to the point of following in her footsteps. I always thought of it as him dreaming how he would/should have reacted to her, not that he really did.
this is what davis said about this song- 'speaks about the eternal struggle of the individual against the mother culture of society that is constantly trying to beat the child struggling for independence and individuality into submission.'
dudeeeeee your face reaction with the portion about the "mom" part was priceless... you reminded me the first time some mormon missionaries were visiting my home and I had this song on and the face on the missionaries was priceless

The part where he goes into talking about his "mother" is usually edited out for the radio version, might explain why the video version is shorter as well. Love these reaction videos bro!!
I've been a fan of your reactions for years but seeing your reaction to the bridge sections made me laugh freaking hard bruh, I can't believe I missed this one😭😭😭😭
An abusive parent should never be seen as a parent. it should be viewed as an abuser getting their comeuppance and nothing more. Though the song isn't meant to be taken literally.
People who have never been abused by their parents cant relate. Believe it or not some people parents are monsters and some children hate those monsters. Hes expressing his emotions and not for a minute do i believe its a metaphor for society. Whoever wrote this song was abused by their parents. Trust me.
The singer has straight up said its a metaphor. He may well have been abused but not by his parents. Its also quite possible it was inspired from a friends abuse. Dave is quite the champion for mental illness.
True, true.
The "mother" is meant metaphorically for the Society!
„The son hitting the mother“ is society fighting turning aggressive against it!
I have been waiting for this react video for a very long time. Yes, finally!
