- Hamza Abdi Barre, Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, addresses the General Debate of the 79th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 24 - 30 September 2024).
World leaders gather to engage in the annual high-level General Debate under the theme, "Unity and diversity for advancing peace, sustainable development, and human dignity, everywhere and for all." Heads of State and Government and ministers will explore solutions to intertwined global challenges to advance peace, security, and sustainable development.
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

Ethiopia has made significant sacrifices for Somalia, yet this often goes unrecognized. As of now, 60% of the Somali region, along with key government compounds, are protected by the Ethiopian army. On the other hand, where has Egypt been for the past 15 years? My Somali brothers and sisters, please think carefully before taking actions that could lead to serious miscalculations and put you in grave danger. Egypt will not defend you they only seek to use you as a proxy in their conflict with Ethiopia over the Nile water dispute. Our best advice is to avoid provoking Ethiopia. Instead, let’s unite to fight our common enemy: poverty
Its wonderful that you as civilians and your government are crying and shouting that your army has made sacrifices to Somali people, we don’t recognize and never ever. Ethiopia has entered our country by force in 2006 and did what you are going to hide under ATMIS mission, killing innocent civilians bombarding schools and hospitals would never be forgotten and you will be held accountable. We have had and have now long history of existence. You have annexed our land western Somali region to your country with the help of British colonial power. For Ethiopia, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and access to the sea are matters of national survival, and Ethiopians are prepared to defend their country at all costs.
Somalia, already fragmented and facing internal challenges, would pay a heavy price by entering this conflict. The consequences for the Somali people could be catastrophic. Ethiopia played a key role in stabilizing Somalia when it was on the brink of collapse, and the unresolved issues of Al-Shabaab and tribal divisions remain. A new war would only worsen these problems.
My advice to Somalia is to put aside emotional reactions and consider both Somalia's and Ethiopia's long-term interests. Engage in dialogue, seek a win-win solution, and avoid involving external parties-war is not the answer. Be cautious in trusting Egypt. Their track record with neighboring countries shows they often betray once their goals are achieved.
