Humboldt State University - 5 Things I Wish I Understood

  • www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-... - I had no idea what to expect when I moved to Arcata, CA for school. I didn’t really read up on it, and all I had to go on was a brief trip that I took three months before moving there. I had a blast, but it was short-lived and it didn’t quite capture the place for what it really was. At any rate, I have compiled a short list of things to consider before making a move to Humboldt Satate University.

The thing is is it's a good place to go to college because you aren't tempted by nice weather to go out and have fun in the sun. you spend a lot of time in the library, which is what you need to do anyways during college. when the sun did come out me and my friend would ditch class and throw the frisbee, because it was such a big deal to have a sunny day. I didn't go out in nature on the weekends as much as I would have liked to. but I did manage to see the sights because of being at the college for 4 years. including body surfing down river rapids which probably wasn't a smart idea, climbing at Moonstone Beach, and jogging through the redwood forest on logging roads. definitely after 4 years I was ready for Southern California sunshine again, that's for sure. green mold grows on glass picture frames in that part of California, LOL. but I loved Humboldt as my college.

I spent 2003 in arcata, a wanderer from pennsylvania, I loved the plaza, loved being able to get cannabis easily, I really loved walking up to the redwood forest, I would way back in and make myself a little camp and make a fire, would sharpen stick in case of bear or mountain lion I would walk into town in morning and go to endeavor . I left in march of 2003 because I thought the invasion of Iraq would be ww3! I guess nobody saw any good in me, didn't have many friends. I'm sorry

Arcata is Arrr Kata not Arcota. I don't believe this is a genuine student. He's know how to say the town name. He doesn't mention the housing shortage, high crime, extreme homelessness or the high cost of living which seems pretty important to kids ready to enroll the rain fall isn't quite as bad as he said but the crud is a rite of passage. Everyone gets sick when they come from warmer climates. In 2016 600 students were homeless and it's unlikely things have improved with mercenary property managers and landlords exploiting renters ruthlessly. The school is great for marine biology forestry and botany majors but otherwise limited in many other disciplines. Like all cal state campuses, HSU takes students with less than perfect grades and or poor college board exams, relying more in personal statements which offers disadvantaged students access; . historically, they seem to out perform more affluent coeds. That said many working poor students struggle to make money enough to survive. To rent a room can cost one over a grand and sharing a place is never a sure thing. If you're considering this college be sure to look for a place to live in early spring so you're ready come fall. Many students are buying old RVs to live in and showering etc on campus. I believe they allow RVs to park on campus. To park in the street you may be tolerated by police but there's a lot of low life out there who use drugs and survive by way of property crimes. There's been a in lot violence involving students in recent years; some of it has ended in death. This doesn't include the young people who drifted into the pot trade either Find work early. There are great restaurants in Arcata contrary to what this video says Salt and other places are busy, pay minimum wage and offer great tips from the locals. They also work with you on scheduling. You don't need a car in Arcata where the co op offers fine whole foods and the Safeway is open late. You are better off avoiding Eureka and other than the trails MCk has little to offer You may want to get a bike or scooter but keep in mind the bus station is right next to campus so you can get anywhere in Humboldt you need to go. The buses are pretty regular, have wifi and never get crowded. I urge all students to cc insider College if the Redwoods ateo year school where earning credits for general Ed is cheaper and well supported by actual educators instead of underpaid inexperienced TAs who don't have time to or skills to get you through a rough class. For students uncertain about their major this is almost necessary. So many kids start and end up wasting time and money because they start off in one major only to discover they are not cut out for that career. The university doesn't mind. It means more money for them. There is a r we ask more than 60% of students nationally flunk or drop out before they finish their sophomore year. Read comments in worthless videos like this and comb theCL housing lists for warnings from other students. Do not go to PM as they mikk $40 application fees from people who will never be qualified for rentals. Chances are you'll need a cosigner and few ever see a deposit again in Humboldt. It's actually a corrupt county full of greedy swine ready to ip you off also many students are forced to give up pets bc they can't find a place where the dogs are welcome. Even comfort and service dogs are banned. This is illegal and should be reported; unfortunately criminals rub things there. Be wary of law enforcement bc they are notoriously lawless and probe to violence which they act out with immunity. As an academic I can tell you many smaller towns consider students a great source of revenue. Drunk kids are like shooting fish in a barrel The lack of knowledge and trusting natural to youth is full exploited. Be vigilant and prepared so you can make the most out of this exciting time of life

His voice makes me want to take a nap. Can't pronounce the name of the town right. And damn, he talks about people getting sick and doesn't even mention "the Crud." Plus, he doesn't mention any of the good stuff. The great food at Jacoby. Midnight hikes out to Fern Lake. Driving or biking along Mad River out to the beach. The weekend markets on the Plaza. Dude, come on!
