- Meredith Thomas started growing organic food for her family’s health. When she was diagnosed with autoimmune disorders, she expanded her vision to embrace holistic wellness with both cultivated and wild plants that offer medicinal benefits. On a small neighborhood lot, she companions vegetables, citrus, and fruiting trees with beneficial papalo, moringa, sunchoke, and lambsquarters (Chenopodium giganteum ‘Magenta Spreen). Along with eating fresh, she ferments, concocts tinctures and bitters, and even makes natural cleaning products with plants from her garden. Music by Freejay MacLoud.

Watching this now on PBS, very interesting, thank you
So inspiring and informative. I also like what she did with her front yard... "I wanted my children to see green when they looked out the window, not the street". Front yards are often wasted gardening space so it's nice to see someone think outside of the box and do something different.
Love this!!!
So glad to see an update of Meredith's garden journey!
Thank you! And thank you for your kind comments...now I want to press plants for oil and support pollinators as a focus. :-)
I think I've seen her in an older episode. I love getting multiple uses from plants in my garden, too.
Very cool to learn more about the wild plants and how to use them. And beautiful garden!
Thank you so much! I also love your work.
Good to hear that herbs helped Meredith Thomas. This video is very informative and inspiring. 👍
This is similar to Chinese herbal medicines, in fact a lot of our modern common western medicine comes from plants. Her garden is so lovely and calming. Awesome video as always ❣️
Thank you!
This is after my own heart. 45, autoimmune, and starting in plant medicine. I'm also on a 15 acres Central Texas property. More space and time than energy and knowledge (I do have some of both). Not sure where to start...
My advice is just start! Start closer to your. house and move out from there...
At 1:21 Hosta Santa. What is that plant and any of its healing use ? Please advise. I found it grow in my yard, but i have no idea what it is until i see it in your clip. Thank you 🌱
I'm sorry for the late reply! I couldn't resist planting the Hoja Santa-I loved the look of its leaves and its vigorous growing pattern...and it has a beautiful aroma...that's why it is used to flavor stews and also you can wrap food like fish, tamales etc with the leaves. You can also dry the leaves and make an herbal tea for cold symptoms and supposedly even rheumatism. I confess I surprisingly have not dried the leaves, but used them in cooking. Happy gardening!
@@merediththomas9426 Thank you
@@merediththomas9426 ...Question: so, I'm in zone 10-b / coastal San Diego, CA. I'm assuming Hoya santa will be perennial, if not evergreen, here? I REALLY love the look and knowing its medicinal now, more inspired to buy some starters. Thanks!
When you started your backyard gardening area, did you cut or till up the area first, or just lay the cardboard and pea gravel on top of the existing lawn area?
What do you do for mosquitoes I'm in Southeast Texas and I have a lot of shade the mosquitoes carry you away
Inspiring! I will research preserving leaves and etc from plants for food and health.
Not a fan of music while people are talking - makes it hard to hear and concentrate on the message.
please get a second opinion, and dont get medical advice from a youtube video about gardening
For sure-I always ask people to do their own research and feel into their own healing journey. Take care Adrian and thank you for writing.
