  • Second graders at South Elementary had an amazing time in their school garden. They explored and tasted a variety of produce, discovering how the plants they started as first graders had fully grown and were ready to harvest! They were surprised to learn that some flowers are edible like nasturtium which has a slightly spicy taste.
The students also practiced their math skills by gathering and weighing the produce together. Pears, peppers, tomatoes, cucamelons, and more were picked and taken home to share with their families.
To wrap up, the students helped support the future monarch butterfly population by harvesting milkweed seeds and releasing them, hoping they will sprout next year and provide food and habitat for our beautiful pollinators.
School gardens play a vital role in a child’s education. They offer hands-on learning experiences that bring subjects like science, math, and nutrition to life. Through gardening, children learn responsibility, patience, and teamwork, while also developing an appreciation for the environment. These interactive lessons foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper connection to nature, making gardens an invaluable part of a well-rounded education.
