Alan, this is Laura that you met at Arkanstol. I didnt see a way to message you so here we are. Hope you got your plane up and running again. I found the quote. Will rogers-"Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment."
It is very rare to see failure attempts, but so rewarding to really know how much work goes into a project. I am very happy to have found your channel and I don't want to miss anything of what you are doing because I will be coming right behind you with this cowling project. Thank you for taking the time to video and edit so much work. Looking forward to see your next attempt. I really liked the shape you were getting at the end, you are on the right track here, your plane is going to look great and the end.
Jim, thank you for taking your time to watch the video and share your appreciation, it is really encouraging. It’s hard to believe I started over about 6 months ago… but great progress is being made. I’m going to have a finished product and a video of the process to share soon.
I have seen molds formed with pink foam, since I was building the mold around the engine pour foam seemed to be the way to go. However in my case the foam would not hold shape. Pink foam is not a bad method though. I have a new plan and will be posting another video soon on this!
Alan, good job! What is plan "B"? I did not know heat would shrink the foam, so you may have saved me some BIG bucks! I wonder if you used a wax covered cardboard, or added a wax paper over (under) the card board if it would have seperated easier. I will do a research on "why" the foam shrank and what to do about it. What "type" of foam did you use? Thanks for a good video!
Hey Randy, eventually I started wrapping my card board forms in Celefain and it does come right off. I used “fiberglass supply depot” 2 part polyurethane foam. It was shrinking from the ambient heat in the garage!!! Wicks aircraft sells a 2 part polyurethane foam that does not shrink at all! “Plan B” is a video I will be publishing soon. In the mean time let me refer you to an interesting method I came across -> ua-cam.com/video/UQvqSbd9qSQ/v-deo.html
Did you use a Polyurethane foam? I’ve only used it once for a Long Ez cowling over 10 years ago and did not have the problem of shrinking. Where did you purchase it?
I'm confused? I did an change to my cowling last summer and didn't experience anything like this? I use poli A+B type of foam. I don't have the brand name with me at home so can't tell you what I had but his is very strange to me, not that I have much more experience with this type of work.
I am slightly confused too. I did a fair amount of research before going into this and from what I could tell other people have used this same brand of polyurethane foam. However, mixed to the correct ratio and given plenty of time to cure it shrinks tremendously during the exothermic reaction of the resin. Shrinking was also observed from the outside air temperature alone. Accepting my losses but not giving up! I still believe I will be able to produce an exceptional cowling for this airframe/engine combo!
Looking back I think I could have done something like that to salvage that approach. I’m happy with the progress I’ve made since then, and I’ve had really good results so far and I’ll be putting another video out soon to show what I’ve done!
lots of needless work bcs you didn,t install guides…some strips or just extra cardboard with the defined shape/lines would have saved a ton of foam and time….it,s nit easy, i know…and shrinking? fuck! what did they sell you?

1:25 THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID 😂🎉
Yay for putting up the failed paths. They happen all the time. That’s gotta be taught too.
Hi Alan, did you complete the cowling, would love to see the final product
@@MorneSwanepoel-ks8pk I did! I need to take my footage and make another video! I’ll plan to get that out soon knowing you’d like to see it!
Any pictures of the final product🙏🏼
@@morneswanepeol3702 currently putting a video together now on the finished cowling!
Use wax paper on the cardboard, it may help releasing from the foam better
Why not use pink insulation foam? Mounting the blocks then shaping them accordingly.

Never mind I just saw the brand on replay, if you put packing tape on the inside of the cardboard the foam shouldn't stick to it

2 part polyurethane. Ordered from Fiberglass supply depot online! It was the 2lb density batch.

What brand s0o we can avoid it?
Fiberglass Supply Depot
Why not just cover that foam with something then put fiberglass over and then make a mould?
