the song is about the salvation army and other organizations promising the poor a better life in the next while doing nothing for the present situation so the promise goes you will get pie in the sky when you die. ;-) wooot hope it's freakin apple.
Long-haired preachers come out every night Try to tell you what's wrong and what's right But when asked 'bout something to eat They will answer with voices so sweet Chorus You will eat, bye and bye In that glorious land above the sky Work and Pray, live on hay You'll get pie in the sky when you die And the starvation army they play And they sing and they clap and they pray Till they get all your coin on the drum Then they tell you when you are on the bum Chorus If you work hard for children and wife Try to get something good in this life You're a sinner and bad man, they tell When you die you will sure go to hell Chorus Working folks of all countries unite Side by side we for freedom will fight When the world and its wealth we have gained To the grafters we'll sing this refrain Last Chorus You will eat, bye and bye When you've learned how to cook and to fry Chop some wood, 'twill do you good And you'll eat in the sweet bye and bye
That may be true depending on where your from. Unions are actually illegal in many places, including half of America. The right to unionize should be an inalienable right.
People have just replaced the preachers by the politicians and their armies of bureaucrats and TV. Being free is a very scary thought to most people, despite what they proclaim.

Sung to the tune of "I'll fly away" a Christian hymn. When I die and my life is over I'll rot away. 6 feet down underneath the clover I'll rot away. I'll rot away how gory,I'll rot away. When I die I won't go in the sky I'll just rot away!

What this song is about can smb tell me If from Poland And its first time i hear this song I dont understand ,,u get pie in the sky when u die l" da fq?
Its a christin hymn with a alternative more accurat text, written by the famous Syndicalist Joe hill 1910 o someting like that, How salvation army and other christians fool and tell people hove to live and work for the big bosses without any food or money and they get there prize in heaven anmd thats bullshit
I don't think it's anti-Christian. I think the words are saying to do your best in this life and let the afterlife, if there is one, take care of itself.
People have been made to believe and accept that they have to work like a slave for food and shelter. So their highest aspiration is to have the slave masters negotiate with them. That's the real tragedy. They do not want to leave the plantation, they just want a better bed of hay and a less painful whip.
The "starvation army" line was a reference to the practice of industrialists employing the salvation army to disrupt IWW strikes with loud music.
Even today the Salvation Army is on the side of money. Churches ain't ever friend to the poor.
This song is literally where the phrase "pie in the sky" comes from.
We will never forget Joe Hill.
Dont panic, organize and rise up! Fight for your rights! Never give up or surrender! If its a classwar they want, its a classwar they will get!
It would be nice if young people now understand this

I find this version very friendly and cheerful. Congratulations !
is as true today as it was when it was written

"Until You Are Dead" By Frederick Drimmer brought me here. Great song, great story about Joe Hill. Still holds truth to this day.
Sung to the tune of "I'll fly away" a Christian hymn.

I've read the lyrics to this song, and found it to be very interesting; but I'd like to know why have they left out the "Holy Rollers" stanza?
Anyone know who sings this version?

Pretty good, but my favorite version is still by Anne Feeney with Commander Cody.

Haunting melody and lyrics, but very apropos for the political environment smothering the 2020 elections.

Funny thought - how the composer of this tune, that was written to serve a heavenly master, found it becoming a hit for the revolutionaries.
This song wasn't written "to serve a heavenly master". Joe Hill was a socialist.
No friend, the tune is a very well known Salvation Army piece. Hill took a lot of such tune and added new lyrics to them. I always likes this one.
ZJD - my limited english denies me access to the meaning of "AL".
I guess that is a sort of compliment?
Gerrard wins tablet was also a socialist (although I suppose that name doesn't mean anything to you)
Best cover my rear, Utah Phillips version is way better. (MBs is good too, but derivative of UPs IIRC).
