    Been to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh around 10 years ago, there was no water festival there yet.. but I had seen that water festival in Myanmar and Thailand.. Thingyan and Songkran

      Water splashing has always been part of our new year celebrations aside dancing, powder pouring, breaking cray pots, climbing banana trees, blimd fold, chasing , just to name some of it and lots more. I'm 40 years old growing being part of that tradition celebrations. Most of it are celebrating at rural areas mostly in the school area. ❤

    • @nonon0n0o
      @nonon0n0o Рік тому

      @@AsainOverSea when I was there, I think it was called Chnam Thmey (khmer new year) in a temple.. lots of giving food to monks and many other things like music and dancing with big mask but they didn't splash water

    • @UdDomm
      @UdDomm Рік тому +1

      @@nonon0n0o definitely not at the right place then. temples are respected in cambodia since the majority of citizens are buddhists. Water fights do happen quite literally every single year, you probably didnt go to the right area and it usually takes place evening-night in popular streets, not temples

    • @nonon0n0o
      @nonon0n0o Рік тому +1

      @@UdDomm are you saying khmer people only splash water at home? Or where did they play water back then? Because I had been to many places there and was there for 3 weeks, but zero water played anywhere.. I did lots of research before I go as well.. but Chnam Thmey was very different from now for some reason. Also, about temple are respected.. I see khmer people playing water in temples nowadays, it's on youtube. Also, I can't find any video about khmer water festival from 10 years ago on youtube.. most of them are dancing and stuff, like for example this one and more.. don't see any water festival

    • @UdDomm
      @UdDomm Рік тому +1

      @@nonon0n0o that's completely different from what I said, I said it's common and basically happens every year on popular streets, if you didn't find it then probably at the wrong time and place. Why? Cus I'm a local, been living here for 15 years and i see it absolutely every single year, if u didn't find a festival that ain't my fault 💀. Also why bother comparing to Thailand Myanmar bla bla, traveling just for the sake of comparing which country is better, isn't actual traveling. Oh yea and bad phrasing on my part, they do many ceremonies or festivals in or near temples but not with monks. Monks are respected here

      It was definitely a unique experience. Since we come from a country where everybody is aware of personal space and shy away from contact, it was nice to challenge our boundaries. The white stuff was talcum powder that they put on our faces. Strange for us, but a lot less poisonous than the paint in India. 🤣

      No, I would say old and young participate in the water fighting. Kids with their parents and of course a lot of tourists over 30. Many locals of various ages come out for this event. But the waterfighting is something that has become popular in recent years. It's not part of the original tradition. ☺️

    Please note: On November 22, 2010, the last night of the Cambodian Water Festival. 375 were killed in a stampede at Diamond Bridge What is suspected is that in 2010, they still played the water festival in November and didn't even use the word Songkran. Who said that Khmer has had Songkran for a long time? Play and still play for a month. They've only been replaced for a few years. The Khmer intended to copy Thailand..

    • @japchaes
      @japchaes Рік тому +2

      Are you dumb? Songkran/Sangkrant is the first day of Khmer New Year (Chol Chhnam Khmer), the first day is called "Moha Sangkrant". Yes the water tradition is inspired by Thailand, as Sangkrant isn't about splashing water. But the splashing water tradition isn't from Thailand, its from Burma's Thingyan festival not Thai songkran. Don't make false accusations. The Khmers have been celebrating Sangkrant for centuries, you can't distort history Thais🤣
