I would also give to it another meaning of Kuma tripping in the third strip of that page when it's implied that Ginney is no longer with them. Oda is a mischevious talent in writing and drawing impactful scenes. edit: minor spelling
I lost my dad in October and Kuma reminds me of him in so many ways. A big self sacrificing guy with a heart of gold. I cried so hard reading this chapter. I've been waiting to find out more about Kuma for over 16 years and it did not disappoint. What a phenomenal character.
I freaking agree man I cried so much with my girlfriend especially that she just caught up fudge man I really just wish I could do more for others and hate when I cannot help
The page where Kuma's life flashes before him is so well done, I don't know where to even start. The fact that it shows Kuma running and huffing just like he has been struggling through his whole life. the way he lowers his head as if he's flinching when he remembers Ginny, the fact that his run is mimicking the Nika dance as if he's trying to encourage himself with the only source of hope he ever wished for. I think this my favorite page of the year if not the whole manga
That panel of Kuma running made me bawl. I haven't shed a tear this hard for One Piece in a long while and this wrecked me. I can't wait to see this animated. EDIT: ALSO, HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE! SEE Y'ALL NEXT YEAR FOR ANOTHER BANGER ONE PIECE YEAR!
I think what makes it more powerful for me is that Kuma didn't KNOW that Luffy is Nika, he BELIEVED in it, Luffy's actions are what made him believe in him, not the fact that he's the goofy rubber boi we all love. Also, something I know won't be talked as much because of all the incredible moments in this chapter is the Vegapunk moment, for me seeing him bein the all cheery scientist we know with Kuma saying what's life without some nuisances to immedaitely breaking down in tears and barely able to do IT made me rethink his whole character.
There are certain chapters I read and immediately get hyped for a particular youtuber to review it. Chapter 1102 immediately had me wanting to see your review Ma'am. You're the one that I rely on for emotionally driven/ thought provoking reactions and this one did not disappoint. I feel like we all took a gut punch on Christmas 😅😂
The most heartbreaking moment for me that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned is at the end of the chapter. Kuma says, "How much of a nuisance was I?" Then seeing his life of love and hope flash in front of us. Then Vegapunk seeing these memories, crying as he flips the switch. In Kuma's mind, he was no one important, not realizing how much of an impact he had on others and the warmth he brought. Those last few pages broke my heart. Then seeing the last panel of Bonney--remembering that this wasn't just a flashback, but something Bonney actually witnessed. That was the icing on a cake baked with tears! Happy Holidays, everyone! Let's prepare for the New Year fast approaching!
I honestly think that this gem is one of the best chapters in One Piece history. Oda made literally every single one of his fans cry while also changing our perspective on key events of the story so far. Every single aspect of this chapter, from story to panelling and drawings, was 10/10. Absolutely brilliant and Oda is a madman.
we started the year with Kuma and ended it with Kuma also Bonney's introduction being the first time we see her and also the last time Kuma sees her makes it exceptional
The last page turn struck me with uncontrollable tears. I remained pretty stoic throughout the chapter but I've never been so suddenly moved to tears by a story. Bravo Oda. And thanks and Merry Christmas to you Merphy.
The last few pages of this pages really broke me 😢😭. Seeing Bonney and vegapunk cry for Kuma as he smiles.. knowing Bonney is probably realizing she just officially killed her dad getting rid of his memories 😭
In this chapter it states that the memories he pushed out are copies, and while yes, he could be lying, I seriously doubt it. She just got to see them.
You ever think Oda just finishes a chapter, leans back, and goes "Damn, I'm good"? Because Oda has basically set the stage so well here that he'd have to actively try to screw it up. Kuma could be dead and it would be the most tragic thing in the story and it'd be amazing. Kuma could get his memories back and we'd be so happy that he finally got a break and it'd be amazing.
This chapter was the first time in a long time that I was crying along with a manga in a way that was literally crying in an ugly way, just couldn't stop myself from going "no, no, oh god no" in a outloud manner, leaving me audibly in pain in my room. It was just so powerful, I couldn't believe it.
I often struggle with crying or hard emotional reactions on the first read/watch of something. But this chapter had me tearing up in no time. Its just the thought of this very pure man, willing to sacrifice and fight for people ending up with the most tragic of lives and not being allowed to live as he pleases. Kuma was quite literally a saint and he was tortured for the most evil of reasons. The most common phrase I hear when it comes to Kuma in this story has been "He deserved better" and I think it truly sums up everything we all think when it comes to his character. He just unfairly had everything taken from him, and even though he took it and carried on being a good person he still continued upon tragedy after tragedy. Kuma might not have been Nika or Joyboy..... but he was pretty damn close as far as liberators go.
And not only was Kuma just like Nika in nature; Luffy would never have been able to become Nika if it were not for the repeated actions of Kuma helping him and his crew become stronger. In many respects, Kuma is just as an important part of bringing the dawn as Luffy (and Luffy's crew) is.
I didn't cry but this chapter definitely had me choked up. No other moment in One Piece has done even that. Even though there has been a lot of emotional backstories and moments.
Someone said, in panels Kuma's running, he thinks of Ginny and stumbles but then thinks of Bonney and picks himself up. Dude's the perfect father. It isn't just that, if you connect every pannel of him running, you actually get the Nika dance. This was a subtle way of showing that he actually fulfilled his dream of being just like his hero. From the moment he was born, he was fighting for others and bringing smiles to those he met.
Personally, the last Kuma Running panel looked more like someone who's exhausted, but they are doing a dead sprint with the last ounce of energy they have. That was Kuma sprinting to get that cure for Bonney.
this chapter make me cry everytime. the running part was especially emotional. Disney, take a lesson on how to write compelling characters that the audience will connect with. our time with Kuma was very short in the grand scheme of the Manga, yet he just shot up to all our top 20's and maybe top 10's favorite character lists.

Furthermore in this chapter they even tell her the lipstick looks good knowing she isnt skilled with it by complimenting to feel like an adult woman. Theyre nice to her like uncles
I'd like this moment to appreciate the fact that Oda gave us such a year and ended the year in such a high and tragic note. This chapter couldn't have been easy to draw for Oda, so thank you for going through this heart break for us Oda as well.
Merry Christmas everyone! What I like about the Kuma discovering Luffy aspect of this is that it doesn’t necessarily have to be destiny. It seems like anyone can be Nika and Luffy just so happened to be the one to fulfill what it means to be Nika. Great chapter. I can’t wait for the next year of this series.
Merry Christmas to everyone besides the celestial dragons, especially the Gorosei, not to mention "Happy 10th Birthday Bonney" gonna be one of those lines that carries on throughout the rest of the story.
It’s amazing the Oda is able to get the entire community together to feel the exact emotions he wanted us to feel. I don’t think anyone who finished the chapter had dry eyes.
I'm just now realizing, Kuma had a target literally put on his back when he was younger. Once he got older he put the target on his front. Kuma would always be first to take a hit for someone. Self-sacrifice was his defining characteristic.
I knew nothing about One piece until the Live Action. Delved more into one of those "size characters of One Piece" videos about the characters. Just on looks........Brook and Kuma fascinated me..........well.........I don't know what to think about any of it now. Brook was mostly curiousity trying to figure out what the live action would do........and then I found out about Laboon. Kuma is easily one of the coolest looking character looks I have ever seen in any media. .......................
When vegapunk had to correct kuma when he started talking about how he must of caused trouble for the people in his life i couldn't help but yell along side vegapunk. Through it all he still worried about others over himself. I cant really put into words how much i admire his character
Gods I cried so much for this chapter ! Just remembering the last scenes already makes my eyes water 😢 It truly just couldn't have been better. What great art ! Merry Christmas !!!
I read this chapter last week and I thought I'll have enough time to process it and won't tear up everytime anymore but I was wrong. What a way to end the year.
Her crew knows she's a 12 year old (10 before the timeskip) considering they've seen her grow up but that's why they follow her, because they care for her safety
Merry Christmas everyone!! It was a really bad move to read this chapter in the middle of a family meeting, I was holding the tears there the whole time T-T Perfect way to end this flashback and this year's chapters, hopefully we get more suffering next year as well
Merry Christmas everyone!!! Anyways, Bonney already know that Luffy is Nika. Well technically, Bonney knows that Luffy will be the one saving the world. I would really like Bonney to join the Straw Hats for a little bit And Bonney sudden change of attitude towards the Straw Hats make sense now. I feel like Bonney can be happy forever even if Kuma dies. Because of Luffy Kuma's flashback is automatic 10000/10. Kuma is the best written character, Kuma's character is just amazing
All I think about is how kuma deserves so much better!!!! But man his actions just are such an inspiration to the rest of us!!! Thank you oda for this story it really tugs my heartstringt
Merry Christmas, Merphy!!! 🎄💕 Literally cried on Christmas Eve because of this chapter. There were little flashbacks of major events from Kuma's POV. It was heartwarming and heartbreaking, at the same time. Still, the chapter is so fitting for Christmas Season - the hope that Kuma had for a better future, selfless love he had for Bonney and his loved ones, the faith in the familial relationship and comradeship between the characters in this chapter. What a chapter indeed.
How you described Kuma launching the Straw Hats reminded me of how Oden launched the scabbards. Both rescued people they trusted to bring the world a better future, knowing well that they wouldn't see that future themselves.
Merphy just talking about this chapter again and those last panels made me sob again!!!! This was in fact the perfect chapter and I think you captured the essence of it by analyzing the true pain Kuma went through and his heart-warming altruism that was there 'till the very end.
Respect for Oda for pulling of the saddest and also best storyarc in OP so far (my opinion) even tho we're already 1000+ chapters in. Ginny's death chapter and the latest one were the first and genuinely had to shed a tear even tho it wasn't the anime. With all the OST's I don't think I'll be ready if it airs 😂 The whole backstory was a a perfect way to show different kinds of love and what they can achieve. Kuma and Ginny's love started of ass innocent love between friends or family and slowly turned to romantic love. The time both spend with each other helped them live happily despite the Horrors they endured during their time as child slaves and later on, the love Ginny had for Kuma saved her during her time in captivity always knowing whatever she has to go trough, she always knows she has Kuma. And for Kuma, having her by her side and his love for his people in sorbet made him so strong and feared, without loosing his kind nature. And even when he lost her and stumbled which was PERFECTLY illustrated in this one panel at the end of the chapter, his love for Bonney as her father and her as his daughter helped him to stand up and continue with his life. And for Bonney. Just imagine you're 10 years old and learn the sad origin of your birth. Having such loving parents who BOTH sacrificied their lives in order for you to live has to be not only a burden but most importantly the biggest blessing you could ever hope for. English isn't my native languag, I can't put these words perfectly like and there's so much more to say about Kuma's and Bonney's Story but what I can say is, that I can't remember the last time where to theme of love has been better depicted as in this backstory. And like Kuma said: he entruts the rest to both Luffy and Bonney so I'm 100% they're gonna end his story in they way he deserves.
I think Bonney joins the the crew as an apprentice pirate! It’s been teased a lot in Wano with all the kids that wanted to join Luffy’s crew. 1. Both Roger and White beard had apprentice Pirates. 2. Bonney now knowing what her dad sacrificed for Luffy she’ll most likely would want to support him. 3. Finding the Sun god was one of her original goals.
I feel like Kuma didn't know for sure. But he channeled his hope into faith. 🌻I already couldn't listen to Memories without getting teary eyed but now the lines 'I was singing since I was a child, the secret melody that was imitated by everyone, maybe this time we could play it better' make me feel like, for me, it's become Bonney's song.
Oda still knows how to create the emotional gut punch. I was crying like a baby the entire chapter. The best backstory in all of One Piece bar none. Kuma is top 1.
Bartholomew Kuma bet on the best horse in the race he even tested it before the race. When the race is finally over he may not be there to collect but the price money still goes to where he intended it to be❤
Realizing how important luffy was to Kuma, and how much he wanted to help them at sabaody also adds so much emotional weight to the last thing he says to luffy before pawing him away - "you and I will never meet again". Poor Kuma 😭😭
Merry Christmas! And thanks for posting on Christmas. Oda has been killing it with the Flashbacks, we all knew Kuma’s wouldn’t disappoint. Keep up the great work.
During the slid show kuma gets weaker and weaker and after ginny he fell almost down but he remembered Bonney and gained strength and begun running straight. Bonney gave him those strength
This chapter, especially Last panel of Bonney crying to me made the Kuma flashback arc a Masterpiece. Just... realising all we've seen was her viewing the tragedy of her dad & death with us. That was just... the words fail me
And on top of that his daughter is 12 years old. A little girl whose not even a teenager is seeing her loving father's dark and cruel past where he was enslaved from birth practically and put himself through so much pain to help those around him. I'm an adult and it was so painful to see this story unfold, but a child who spent 2 years trying to get her father back.....I can't imagine how much she was hurting
Sorry to the theorizers but i LOVED the intentionality oda put behind kumas character. he was a very active character, im glad it. Wasnt dragon or vega punk that was why he did what he did for the strawhats. He did nothing but but put his best foot foreward and moved empathetically his whole life and never let his trauma redefine his character like a doflamingo.
Damn this chapter shattered my walled off heart. Kuma's sacrifice hit on a another level. He gave everything he had and so much more to not only save his daughter but also Luffy and his crew. I love that before anyone really knew that Luffy was the next Nika he figured it out only on the basis that Luffy stands up to the powers that be and befriends everyone that isn't an evil asshole. He knew if anyone was gonna free the world and bring the dawn that's been waiting to occur for over 800 years it was gonna be Luffy. IDK what God or devil Oda sold his soul to to be able to write a story this amazing. Crazy to think after 26 years of making One Piece he still leaves us guessing. I've said it many times and I'll keep saying it, Oda is the GOAT!
Its actually a perfect time that Oda released it on Christmas.. Kuma has ideals of a Christian who is waiting for God's (Nika's) second coming, which is what most Chrsitians believe.. Kuma seeing and believing Nika slowly being reincarnated (born) is such a perfect release for Christmas season.. Im planning to get a Kuma Tatoo, such a good character and the kindest, unselfish and the most Saint Character on Anime..
"Your life has not caused anyone harm, but your death will bring pain to everyone who loves you." Is such a powerful line. For me, it's right up there with "When does a man die...". On that note, a man does not die when his individuality and sense of self is erased from his body. A man dies when he's forgotten, and Kuma will never be forgotten.
Shout out to the artwork for these recent videos, they are f*cking awesome. And a big shout out to Merphy for the idea, clearly great artwork isn't free.
You know, when Who's Who first brought up the Nika stuff and the Gear 5 stuff was initially revealed, i remember a lot of people were calling it an asspull. I'm just so happy that as this Kuma flashback and Egghead have gone on, we have seen how this stuff has always been the goap of the story. How it relates to Skypeia, and how Kuma's entire character revolves around Nika. It's feels so planned and thoughtful from Oda and it almost makes you feel like you've been missing it the whole time. I have rewatched parts of One Piece from time to time and now when i watch it, it feels like every arc and every couple of episodes, there is a reference to the sun, freedom and some sort of power Luffy has
Merry Christmas to the rat queen Murphy, the goat Left chapter was incredibly incredibly happy, but sad at the same time. This entire flashback has made me feel so many emotions that I can’t even put into words half the time.
This is the deepest Oda has wounded me since ace. Maybe deeper, if not for the pure agony and distress luffys voice actor poured from her soul in those scenes. Kuma is the best of us.
Kuma, life flashing before his eyes, stumbles at the thought of ginny, but remembers bonney and stands up proud into the sun will make me cry in the anime
merry christmas merphy!!! this chapter ruined me - i knew that it was only going to get sadder but UGH seeing vegapunk, sentomaru and the whole egghead staff salute as vegapunk sobs before he turns kuma into machine is heartbreaking and kuma telling him to wish bonney a happy birthday? tears even as im writing this devastating
Kuma's back story reminds me so much of the movie The green mile, a gentle giant who takes people's pain away, got accused, both are slaves, both are man of God, and the scene where Vega punk is crying is basically the final moment of John Coffey
The final panel with Bonney crying; making you realize that this wasnt a mere flashback, but Bonney learning the truth about her father was perfect. Oda showing his mastery of the craft. Perfection
I can't believe i missed this video when it came out 😭 but now i can't wait to see what you have to say about 1103.. i know its not officially out yet but i personally read it first and then read the official release later
If you recall earlier chapters right after Bonney saw Kuma's memories, she was very joyful talking to Luffy and Luffy was like "weren't you crying just a second ago?" I think that could be related to Kuma telling Vegapunk that his mark in the world will be saving Luffy and Bonney, so Bonney realized "hey, I'm here with the rubber man my dad liked so much, helping him out, he would be proud". I think Bonney's gonna start treating Luffy like a big bro, kinda lile Tama did
Oda is villainous for this
The double entendre of 'running' and also doing the Nika dance is some of Oda's best visual work, what a genius play.
I would also give to it another meaning of Kuma tripping in the third strip of that page when it's implied that Ginney is no longer with them. Oda is a mischevious talent in writing and drawing impactful scenes.

Only Oda can turn a character into an all time great with a single flashback. What a LEGEND!
Lmfao yeah, did the same with Corazon and Oden aswell

Gods I cried so much for this chapter ! Just remembering the last scenes already makes my eyes water 😢
It truly just couldn't have been better.
What great art ! Merry Christmas !!!
I just know I’ll crying grown man tears when this becomes animated cause I damn near teared up reading it
I have watched so many reactions already, and in every single one i shed a tear just for remembering that last part, man, that one hurt me
You wanted to see kuma's flashback the most and now seeing you loving it so much is so satisfying. Peak piece never disappoints.
It was a really bad move to read this chapter in the middle of a family meeting, I was holding the tears there the whole time T-T
Perfect way to end this flashback and this year's chapters, hopefully we get more suffering next year as well
Merry Christmas everyone!!!
Anyways, Bonney already know that Luffy is Nika. Well technically, Bonney knows that Luffy will be the one saving the world. I would really like Bonney to join the Straw Hats for a little bit
And Bonney sudden change of attitude towards the Straw Hats make sense now. I feel like Bonney can be happy forever even if Kuma dies. Because of Luffy
Kuma's flashback is automatic 10000/10. Kuma is the best written character, Kuma's character is just amazing
If Bonney is an official strawhat or not is the only question for me, because I 100% think Bonney will be on the Sunny for the foreseeable future.
All I think about is how kuma deserves so much better!!!! But man his actions just are such an inspiration to the rest of us!!! Thank you oda for this story it really tugs my heartstringt
Merry Christmas, Merphy!!! 🎄💕
Literally cried on Christmas Eve because of this chapter.
I cried again watching your review. Kuma is such a pure soul and i want him himself to hit Saturn...
Merry Christmas!!! Merphy to you and your family
I think oda heard people saying he doesn't kill off characters so he decided to take it personally and broke everyones hearts
How you described Kuma launching the Straw Hats reminded me of how Oden launched the scabbards. Both rescued people they trusted to bring the world a better future, knowing well that they wouldn't see that future themselves.
Your artist is doing an amazing job. That piece is so beautiful and unique. Great interpretation of what we got in the manga.
Merphy just talking about this chapter again and those last panels made me sob again!!!! This was in fact the perfect chapter and I think you captured the essence of it by analyzing the true pain Kuma went through and his heart-warming altruism that was there 'till the very end.
Merry Christmas Merphy! This chapter broke me
Respect for Oda for pulling of the saddest and also best storyarc in OP so far (my opinion) even tho we're already 1000+ chapters in.
Well, she's 12 now, but it's still very much a lot for a child.
Kuma’s knew that Luffy was Joyboy even before anyone else in One Piece did 🤯
I feel like Kuma didn't know for sure.
When the race is finally over he may not be there to collect but the price money still goes to where he intended it to be❤
this chapter is powerful af as it is, cant wait to see this animated
I'm so happy that as I heard there was a flashback going on I stopped reading to just read it in one go it was such a good read
Realizing how important luffy was to Kuma, and how much he wanted to help them at sabaody also adds so much emotional weight to the last thing he says to luffy before pawing him away - "you and I will never meet again". Poor Kuma 😭😭
Bonney received every single letter Kuma wrote to her.
Oooh she did! She fucking did! I am crying so hard 😭
Really put into words what i felt about this chapter, Merry Christmas!
Best Dad 😭
Kuma really said it! "HE IS HIM."
@@ReiseLukas Now imagine this whole story arc animed with music & voice acting.
Im gonna be a whimpering puddle at the end 🥲
Merry Christmas! Hope you and the family have lovely holidays!
Petition to change you artists, they keep making me cry and i think thats not fair
Thanks for not trying to completely restrain your emotions. I really felt it... made it so much better as a review.
I have rewatched parts of One Piece from time to time and now when i watch it, it feels like every arc and every couple of episodes, there is a reference to the sun, freedom and some sort of power Luffy has
Oda decided to give us tears for Christmas and it was beautiful.
Merry Christmas and such a BEAUTIFUL review. Thank you for being a One Piece fan.
Merry Christmas!
Yes, the Bonney pirates know she's only 10. Her crew are all from the Sorbet Kingdom. Most of them grew up with Kuma!
0:00 Oda is on the naughty list XD
Made Me tear up all over again!
Nah this made me cry forreal when i saw bonney crying
The art you showed was just perfect. As was this flashback. Pure perfection.
Oh my god, the art is immaculate
I want to frame it, one of the best One Piece fanarts i've seen for sure
Kuma, life flashing before his eyes, stumbles at the thought of ginny, but remembers bonney and stands up proud into the sun will make me cry in the anime
In my opinion, Oda has somehow made the newest backstory the saddest in One Piece. And there was some tough competiton.
merry christmas merphy!!!
this chapter ruined me - i knew that it was only going to get sadder but UGH
seeing vegapunk, sentomaru and the whole egghead staff salute as vegapunk sobs before he turns kuma into machine is heartbreaking and kuma telling him to wish bonney a happy birthday?
tears
even as im writing this
devastating
Kuma's back story reminds me so much of the movie The green mile, a gentle giant who takes people's pain away, got accused, both are slaves, both are man of God, and the scene where Vega punk is crying is basically the final moment of John Coffey
The thumbnail is breathtakeing
The anime better do this chapter justice, no matter what!
Whoever did that art as kuma runs is a genius, beautiful art 🔥
Kuma Backstory Top 1.
How how right Vegapunk was when he said there was nothing but pain in that bubble.
Gods, Ms. Napier! Don’t choke up like that. I’ve been trying to hold back all the emotions I went through reading this myself.
I've always known one piece was sad and would fuck me up emotionally but this chapter was the first time I've cried while reading it
every week i appreciate how this mom is now one piece's biggest advocate
If you recall earlier chapters right after Bonney saw Kuma's memories, she was very joyful talking to Luffy and Luffy was like "weren't you crying just a second ago?" I think that could be related to Kuma telling Vegapunk that his mark in the world will be saving Luffy and Bonney, so Bonney realized "hey, I'm here with the rubber man my dad liked so much, helping him out, he would be proud". I think Bonney's gonna start treating Luffy like a big bro, kinda lile Tama did
Wow tell your artist great job on the art piece for the thumbnail
