14:12 That's stupid advice. Do your job and do it well. As an employer of a small business, I've had to lay off employees to keep the business going. And apart from employees that are unpleasant to have around, the first people to go are (1) the ones who only do the minimum and (2) the ones who show no ability to move up and handle more responsibilities.
Why would anyone do more for you if you are not going to pay more ? Just like you don't give more money to someone for doing extra, same way someone shouldn't do extra. If you made your job requirement clear during hiring, someone should just do what he was hired for, NOTHING EXTRA.But I suppose you think it's stupid because it doesn't benefit you right ?
@@TellEmBoi Basically he believes in the modern slavery
@@TellEmBoi Yep. This is why I am against the narrative the small businesses are more ethical, because a lot of small businesses have the same cutthroat attitude that major corporations have. The major difference is that with big businesses, you tend to get more benefits and working harder tends to give you promotions, whereas with small businesses, you don't get much rewards for going above and beyond.
@@TellEmBoi That's a loser's mentality. But you're a young man and your opinion may change in 10-15 years. Here's my advice: Stop telling these kids to do the minimum because the idea that they'll eventually be let go is encouraging a version of "victim mentality." The correct advice you should be giving to these kids is to demonstrate that you're an asset. Create good relationships with your past and present employers and coworkers. Nobody is ever promoted for doing just the minimum. Promotion comes from excellence and demonstration of aptitude, motivation, and accountability. Economic cycles occur and no company has ever been immune to downturns. Layoffs happen, it's nothing to take personally. When layoffs do occur, the company has to make the tough choice to retain the most valuable staff members. This is why large companies, especially tech companies, always eliminate HR positions and marketing positions first instead when they are forced to trim the fat. And based on this video, with all the stories coming from women, they were likely in a similar aforementioned positions such as HR, marketing, or admin. The reality is: America is going through tough times and things will get much worse in the upcoming years, especially as A.I. eliminates countless jobs. Just as there are periods when layoffs are rampant, there are periods when hiring and promotion occur as well. The current CEO of Costco, Ron Vachris, spent decades working as a $3/hour forklift operator for the company, gradually moving up through demonstration of aptitude and motivation. In his 40 years with Costco, periodic of layoffs occurred and I guarantee you that he wasn't just doing his minimum job duties -- nothing more, nothing less -- otherwise someone wouldn't have taken notice of his potential. Running a business is hard. I employ 10 people and I've taken pay cuts several times just to retain an employee or to add a new hire who showed promise during her internship. And when I've had to close a position due to inability to meet overhead for 2 consecutive quarters, I personally reached out to fellow employers to recommend the person who was leaving my company. I would never do that for anyone who just did the minimum and NOTHING EXTRA.
It really is...this is how people get laid off
There is no such thing as job security any more. Always be prepared to be able to walk away at anytime.
My daughter is in tech on a ten member team. She has an unscheduled meeting pop up with her director on her day off and she asks me to come over to help babysit her toddler because she thinks she might be getting laid off. Her phone blows up from the other 9 members on her team whose positions were all eliminated (outsourced to India). Her director tells her the bad news that her job was eliminated but by some miracle they offered her another full time position in the company (she was working part time because of her baby). She dodged a bullet this time but it’s hanging over everyone’s head that you could get laid off at any time.
What happens if I start my own business? I won't get fired.

I don't think I would cry over being laid off. This is the reality that many people need to accept. Your employer is always going to choose profits and short-term gains over long-term growth and stability. As an employee, you need to take your financial health and career very seriously. Act like a company. Layoffs will continue in 2025. Just hope most people are prepared.

What a horrible way to start off 2025!
Most tech companies are in the mature phase now, rather than growth. Fewer people are needed. Globalization has been shifting jobs from Western nations for decades. Western consumers no longer matter. Consumer growth is in the growing middle class in Asia. Capitalism doesn't care about nations or borders. Politicians have done nothing to protect workers.
There is a lot of criticism about Gen Z as workers. I think this is just shifting the blame for failures of the economy onto the backs of a particular generation. Gen Z is no dumber, lazier, less well educated, etc. than previous generations. They are scapegoats.
Welcome onboard guys. Been laid off in mid 2024. I learnt something important to keep in mind: when a Company wants to lay you off, they ALWAYS something in your work to do it, a late, what you wrote in an e-mail one day, even on social platforms because they spy you, AL-WAYS.

I was wrongfully terminated from a job a week after I complained about “harassment”. I worked there for 9 years without any incident and then I was told the person I complained about complained about me and that I was rude to her which is an absolute lie. Thankfully I had witnesses and put everything in writing. They renamed their company so they wanted to get rid of long term employees so that they can pay less to newer employees.

Yes. Take 12 weeks to do nothing and look for another job, and get paid for it. Cut the cord, and understand that you are expendable. But I’m sure your employer told you that you are now part of the family when you got the job. Corporate America at its finest.
Many these layoffs are getting shittier and shittier
Only 5 states plus DC have an individual mandate for health insurance.
Wow, she got a heads up of 12 weeks was a great thing.
Yeah, at least she has time to look for another one 😢
The most reliable jobs to get these days for a Monday through Friday work week are the federal, state, county and or city employers. However, not everyone can get these jobs even if you are exceptionally qualified. To get these jobs you'll need the help of a relative who works there (nepotism) or if you know someone that works there who can hire you (cronyism). The only other possibility is if you are a young, single and good looking female (doesn't matter if you are qualified or not), that boss is going to be mighty interested in hiring you. And that's the way the world spins.
I don't know if I got a good deal guys, but judge for yourselves.
I work in a Teamsters outfit, I put food on people's table everyday. It is in warehouse logistics, manual labor with some systems knowledge.
It's $47,840.00 a year base. Over time is time and a half, available almost daily up to 4 hours, production bonus is $250 weekly.
Pension retirement is $65k a year after 20 years (or retirement age), full medical-dental $500 deductible across the board no clauses, all family included.
pay tops out at $61,000/yr after 2.4 years but we are negotiating for a $65,000 base and a $85,000 top-out right now.
You can't get fired for any reason other than job abandonment and obscenely calling off work ( you get 600 sick hours ). And the fact that the logistics of food delivery in the USA is probably just as stable as a dollar bill ( well nothing is permanent in this world but who you gonna call) the Teamsters have controlled that portion of the business so far.
Let me know what you guys in the corporate world think
and thank you.
5% layoffs are normal. Companies always counsel out or PIP their lowest 5% performing employees each year. If they kept them, it would impact their business negatively.

Its baffling how employees take this sooooo personal. Employers are not your mama or papa, or spouse. They don’t owe you anything except your paycheck and any fringe benefits if they are applicable to your work agreement. Unless you’re a Supreme Court justice, employers never promise anyone a job until death do them part or the employee finds something better, which they will drop an employer like a bad habit the moment they do. Employers don’t whine about employees when they dump them to go work for another company. Just like employees don’t owe employers anything but the labor they pay for, same goes for the employers. Please understand and recognize that it’s just business, but as employees, it’s so hard for them to understand that fact. It’s usually nothing personal but people love to soak in the negative feelings of taking it so personal instead of using that same energy to just find another job or grind to start their own business. Yes i am speaking from an 11 year employer’s (business owner) point of view. Thankfully, I never had to lay a staff member off, but if I do then they will get the unemployment insurance we pay the state quarterly for such an occasion as that, and they’ll get their vacation leave payout they are owed, and a great reference from me if they were a good worker. My business is not eternally indebted to them just because I gave them a job. Geez ! ….. Oh and the reason people are typically laid off at the end of the day and usually at the end of the week is because employers don’t want to disturb the productivity, mood and energy of other workers during the peak performance hours of the day/week. They also don’t prefer to ruin the laid off employee’s entire day.
