- Junior doctors from the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front have initiated a hunger strike due to the government's failure to address their demands for justice, following a series of alarming incidents, including the recent rape and murder of a minor girl. Dr. Sayantani, a representative of the group, emphasized the urgency of their cause, stating, “Anyone could have been ‘Abhaya’. It is our responsibility that there is no more ‘Abhaya’.” She highlighted the ongoing threats faced by women and called for immediate action. First of all, the state govt must ensure workplace safety and provide proper work environment to doctors. We too were junior doctors when we started our career, and likewise, the present junior doctors in a decade or so will be senior super-specialists leading the healthcare deliver. Political involvement in medical colleges must be stopped. Kolkata has produced medical professionals famous worldwide, but healthcare in WB still lags. Party politics in medical colleges should be stopped. How is it possible that a whole government and hospital administration is subverting investigation of heinous crime by a mere civic volunteer ? How could 7000 vandals be mobilised without political aid to destroy evidence? All doctors, everywhere are with junior doctors. State govt must act. Hon’ble Governor, for whom we have utmost respect should make the state administration take action. May be, GOI should think of President’s rule.
