There was an espn commercial which started out with Rangers goalie Mike Richter in net stopping everything that was shot at him. Then he skates away from his net when one more puck was shot on goal. But it doesn't go in. We see that there was plexiglass covering the goal. As soon as the puck bounces off of the plexiglass Richter skates back over to the goal and wipes off the mark left by the puck. Richter was my guy and I loved that commercial.
I used to work for ESPN in the HQ, they DO film those commercials IN the OFFICE, they are super funny to watch but they basically take a whole day to film and no one does work that day because 80% of the floor is blocked off so no one goes to talk to the players
All of thesse adverts were great, but my favourite has to be the Swedish twins one. Having the Sedins tell each other about picking up a few bucks was always the killer. "I got a couple loonies..." "I got a toonie..." "Oh, cool!"
we had 1 in Quebec a few years back featuring Yvon Lambert and he had to do it in both french and english and when it came time to say ' At Dorion suits there are no Hassles' lets just say Yvon skipped the H in Hassles as a lot of french speaking do when speaking english, well that english commercial wasnt aired for too long but it was funny as hell.
My favourite was the Ovechkin being the spy, followed closely by the road trip stuff. I get that from a branding standpoint it can be a little 'kiddish' and it feels like that's the opposite of what the NHL wants, but, like you, I'd love to see a return to a league that pokes a little fun and shows personality.
growing up near Boston, my favorites were local ones where the original bear (now Blades) would walk the concourse and interact with fans. the best was a kid in a B’s sweater took his date in a Hab sweater…so after a look of confusion and disappointment, the bear knocked the kids nachos and pulled the sweater up, beating the snot out of him! 🤣
Agreed, most of these could not be made today. But All of these ESPN Sports Center commercials were the best. I know it's not a hockey related one but Arnold Palmer in the lunch room making an Arnold Palmer was the best one.
This era had so many memorable ads, Sportcenter in the States did these with all major sport Leagues. Terry Tate was the best I believe those where Reebok.
A good one was the Keith Tkachuk "Power Forward" where he's trying to open the car door for the hot chick who locked the keys in her car. First he's using a coat hanger then gets frustrated and elbows the window out. As good as that run of hockey ads were the original Lite Beer commercials from the early 70's were very good also. My favorite was the one where Bob Uecker has the guys at the local pup convinced that he's Whitey Ford.
The "It's harder than you think" and the "(insert sport) would be better if it were like hockey" sets of commercials. There was one other one (a beer commercial I think) about hockey players not needing to be in shape featuring a *massive* dude playing goal that basically just plugged the entire net. Oh and not to forget the "Hockey Town" commercials with the 4 idiots.
Ovechkin is one of the funniest NHL players of all time, and there is 0 debate. Even with his connections to not-so-great people, we should be focusing on their personalities and the sport. As a wise man once said "the [NHL] wants you to act like robot, celly like robot, be robot".
Gretz and Messier playing chess. After clear, deep thought, 99 puts Messier's queen in check. Messier knocks every piece off the board. "Oops, I slipped." Can't remember if it was an ESPN commercial, but I'm still tempted every time I'm losing at chess (which is every time).
The NHL today has a lot of stars that can make entertaining ads like these back in the 2000 like Jack Hughes, Trevor Zegras, Cole Caufield, Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, Mitch Marner, David Pastrňák, and Nikita Kucherov while drunk, but if McDavid is in it with them he will ruin it
I dont know if anyone remembers the Nike skate commercials in the late 90s/early 2000s. The goalies would be walking the streets randomly trying to make "kick saves" because they are crazy because they couldnt stop fedorov (I think?) Was there a hockey element to the Bud light penguin "doobie doobie doo" campaign?
I know its newer than these and not an NHL commercial, but we still quote the ovi pizza is here commercial all the time. My daughter just said it today. 😂
It'd be dope to get this kinda personality back in the NHL. But given how the All-Star game and Skill competition went last season, the League's top players may be TOO media trained to capture the same atmosphere these did.
Fell in love with the sport....by watching it. Yep, sums up today's media. Also love the generation that ruins everything, complaining about how something got ruined.
My wife (ahem) downloaded several of these, and the "road trip" is her favorite, while the "Russian spy" is mine. Also, in the 2010s, current day politics of any sort was just being birthed, so the fun of sports was still around. Then BAM! Overnight, sports was weaponized and divided entire swathes of fans. On-air sports hasn't been the same. THAT's why we won't ever. get. old-school ESPN Sports Night ads again.
I've been trying to find it for years, does anyone know the name of the song in the Swedish Twins commercial? I'm sure it's a royalty free song they found, but I've been wanting to find the full song since that commercial aired lol
The NHL Network commercials with the coach using coach-speak to his team are priceless: ua-cam.com/video/Pz3KpY5lrRc/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OnFrozenBlog But the commercial that I wish they would play all the time is this one ("Cup Raise"): ua-cam.com/video/NYwA9s-hjMs/v-deo.html&ab_channel=NHL
Ryan Miller for and energy drink, trading insults with another goalie. The “your mama” insults wouldn’t fly in today’s snowflake environment but that was a funny commercial.
You and Jonathan Hawkey should start doing a weekly podcast together like spittin chiclets. I feel like ur guys pod would grow to even bigger than that one. Like those guys, but idk usually at some point I have to skip. Where as with you two guys i cant get enough
Everything that happens in the NHL today is monitored and controlled to ensure maximum profits. Take the case of Cole Caufield having to ask Bettman for permission to change his number to 13. Bettman allowed it, because he determined the move would cause minimal 'harm' to the Habs franchise and the NHL. These human gestures are frowned upon by the owners of the game, because they could cost a few dollars... Humor is risky and could 'harm the brand', if 20% of the market audience don't get it or, God forbid, find it 'offensive'. Gone are the days of guys like Eddie Shore, Jacques Plante, Eddie Shack or Bob Probert. Colorful and often problematic characters who will never be forgotten due to their eccentric ways and flaws, but who would never have fit into the corporate cookie-cutter NHL of today.
Ovi making a joke about being a spy really isn't offensive, it was a reference to a ridiculous Cold War trope, Putin thought Dr. Strangelove was funny when Oliver Stone showed him Also, an international celebrity having a relationship with a political figure in their home country is hardly much of a "connection" to talk about, I mean does Patrick Kane have "connections" with Obama? What does it matter anyway?
I'm from the DC area and generally don't care what athletes' political views are. Kane could have Biden and Trump sing him to sleep every night for all I care. I'm not really sure how to explain without hitting essay length, but I still think Ovechkin launching a pro-Putin group in 2017 (not just in Russia, in English too) was one of the most disrespectful things a superstar has ever done to their city.
_"Putin thought Dr. Strangelove was funny when Oliver Stone showed him"_ It's a comedy, it's supposed to be funny. Also, Putin isn't just a "political figure," he's a murderous dictator that rules his country with an iron fist.
Ovechkin supporting a totalitarian shit stain like putin and being his friend makes ovechkin a bad person, simple as that. You comparing obama to putin makes me think either you have no clue what kind of shit putin is up to or you just don't care.
@@yelling3874 To their city? What does language matter? The Ovechkin being a spy bit is still my most favourite one they did!
It's hilarious!
It was Samsonov above the ceiling tiles IN FULL GEAR that killed me.
I 'm 99% sure that's Varlamov

Back when Ovi had so much energy, felt like he would have energy for an eternity.
Kind of hard to keep that energy and enthusiasm when you’re made out to be a villain because of current geopolitics
@@Koz4concern north amerikans dont get that sadly

I want to see the “History will be made” commercials return!
YES!
Those commercials would give me goosebumps.
I don't think anything beats the Swedish twins....that was hysterical...watching the Sedin's trying to dance
1:14 - *Almost didn't recognize Jumbo Joe without his massive beard. lol*
Ha! Holy Crap. I was trying to figure out who that was.
You brought back the Ovi spy commercial I remembered instantly. Prob my fav. The fake laugh then Ovi going serious again was so funny.
Crosby with an A on his jersey is the most insane thing on there.
There was an espn commercial which started out with Rangers goalie Mike Richter in net stopping everything that was shot at him. Then he skates away from his net when one more puck was shot on goal. Neat!
The one with Ovi and Varly as Russian spies is my all time favorite.
I love going back watching the hockey ads 😂. My Favroute is The goalie gear ad with Vassy. Always funny when it cuts back to him in full gear.😂
Ugh. This was the worst. The NHL was trying so hard to be cool. So glad this era of cringe All-Star costumes and personality marketing is behind us.
@@Borodin410you can just say you’re boring
My fav is the french canadian goalie working different jobs in full gear
His taxi driving skills were Vezina worthy
Cutting his lawn in goalie gear while complaining about Mats Sundin! "I never knew what he was going to do! Glove side! Stick side!"
@@bryanderksen4448 Ah! A Maple leaf!
The OVY with the big boss for chips... the commercial with the All-Stars... these ones were the absolute GOAT publicities outside the hockey itself...

The hotel commercial was fantastic. But yes the History Will Be Made and Because Its the Cup were absolutely the best

The mini goalie ad. Super heavy French accent was the kicker

Watching hockey on Versus in 2008 just hit different.
Ovi is actually a good actor too for an athlete 😂
I always liked the one with Rick Nash raising the water cooler jug like it was the cup.

The nike goalie ads were also pretty good as well as the NHL on Fox, paul kariya (i think) sharp shooting his peas at the next table.
Some of the only ads I like
As a Caps fan, I can't help liking the "messing with Crosby" bit
Remember the old Molson commercials? I am Canadian? The good old days
The McKenzie Brothers asking Guy LaFleur what his name means. "Must be something fierce, like a tiger or something, eh?"

No way. Ovis best commercial is hands down the school one for his ccm skate promotion.

The old Bud Light commercial series of Hockey Falls. Those were gold commercials. Goodness bring those back.

“Worst leafs on earth” was pretty awesome
Going back to the fun hockey ads would go a long way to helping the league. And not having golf as their All Star Week activity.
They tried that at the All-Star game and competition a few years ago. It didn't go so well.
