Have you ever been asked at the last minute to play under the pastor at the end of service?
Or during ministry time, a baby dedication, a prayer, a spoken word, the list goes on!
If you've never been asked to do this before, don't worry you will! Plan ahead for it now with patches and a progression ready, and you'll have confidence to step up and play.

So glad to see Zoey Dechanel doing the Lord's work. ;-)
😂 That story at the end haha! I know what you mean! I’ve actually never had any slip-ups for altar call/invitations. If I do play notes outside of the scale, I just tell everyone I was adding some jazz to it. 🤷♂️🤫😂 haha!
For chords, I’ll typically use the I, IV, V, and vi in different orders, depending on what the speaker’s talking about. I try to “follow them” if it’s appropriate, as in, if they are really getting pumped up, I might throw in a quick little run or rumble on a couple chords. Again, like y’all said, it’s all about feeling it out in the moment.
Totally, Jared! that's great :)
I used Piano Bread and Butter this past weekend. Unprompted the musical director said my playing was "butter"! Thanks for SK
That's awesome Pete! One of our faves :)
AWESOME.....LOVED IT...😊 LEARNED A LOT FROM U GUYS....
Thank you!
One thing that I find important, which sounds kinda obvious is to listen to what the person is talking about whilst you are underscoring. Often they will build to something in what they are saying, and if you are also able to build musically, perhaps moving from minor to major key, or modulating to add additional depth then that can really work well. I like to use a progression such as C#m7/C#, Amaj9, C#m7/G#, Emin(add9)/B.
I sometimes also switch between piano and electric piano, just to keep it interesting if it's going on a while.
Those are great ideas Chris! I've had time where the speaker isn't patched into my in-ears and I always ask for it, I really don't like having to underscore blind - and you can definitely create a lot of motion underneath them and build musically with what's being talked about.
Thank you for this useful video. I also use a cutofffilter to not have the same Frequenzies than the Vocals. (3-6k hz)
awesome video!
Thanks for the insight. As a beginner, I find it really difficult underscoring under my pastor, and feeling out moments. Theres been some real awkward moments😅
Yeah! It takes a little time to get comfortable, but we've found the more you prepare for it, the more you aren't thrown off by it. Sometimes I like to even jam at home on the chord progressions from the songs we are doing so I'm having a few creative ideas inside the keys/songs for that week to feel ready.
one question - why do you use nano control ? the midi has the nobs and parameters too Can't they use ?
We've designed the nanoKontrol2 to be plug and play with our Sunday Keys template which we like to use for live performance, although you could definitely assign knobs and faders on the keyboard instead if you wanted to.
@@SundaySounds thanks, I have keyboard with nobs but they cant really use for mainstage so should i buy Nano control or Midi kb?
@@randomsounds5657 If your knobs send midi reliably they will work with MainStage - Korg's nanoKontrol2 is one of our favorites.
How is the keylab for playing piano patches?
It's nice and light! It has semi-weighted action so if you are used to weighted keys it can be a little challenging for more busy piano parts. I've heard great things about keylab88 though. Check them both out!
Gracias
