As a 40 plus year fan of dci and Who fan. This was their best show ever. Brings me to tears and goosebumps. Real dci shows will have this effect. The lot of you get this!
1990 was supposed to be my last year, except a drunk driver decided I didn't really need my right ankle, or knee. By the time I was fully rehabbed, I aged out.
11:15 float and staff going nuts on the sideline! Epic ending with that epic '90 drumline front and center killing it on those racks!! Thanks Tom for all the amazing lines! That ending is one of the greatest of all time! RIP Tom Float! Gone too soon! You influenced so many lives including mine!
Two drum majors named Gary same as me. I’ll never forget in the tv intro they said their names and were the drum majors for the Blue Devils from Concord California…This year’s excerpts are from the rock opera Tommy by The Who! and a chill went up my spine! Goosebumps! This was also Tom and Catherine Float’s last year as the head drum instructor and front ensemble instructor after a REMARKABLE 4 DCI Fred Sanford High Percussion titles in a row-83-86!
I love this show. I've always wondered how much this show was a reaction to their 1989 placement (4th, and could have easily been 6th). It's like someone on staff said, "Big band jazz isn't working for us anymore. We need a change!"
When I firs heard the Blue Devils were doing Tommy, I wondered how good it would it be. After watching and listening, it has become one of my favorite shows of this corps. I thought every section of the hornline was featured really well, the drum solo was incredible, and the color guard incredible. Blue Crew '90--WELL DONE!
@EricMc2022 I saw this a few times on the California leg of the tour (I want to say Riverside, UOP, and Concord shows). It was received well. I can't stand drum corps now but when I think of it, this is my era. Nothing today could sound like this, I don't care how many amps, synthesizers, voiceovers, or trombones they have.
I have to agree man… it’s been nearly 27 years since I first heard this show, and in all that time with the hundreds of times I’ve heard it, Larry Shane’s solo NEVER fails to give me goosebumps. Not kidding, 100% legit. There are other solos from other years that are great, but none give me goosebumps like this. And then there’s the company front BYFBO part, who can’t love that? :P
This is one of my favorite drum corps shows of all time. It's a bit hokey, but I love the music and the geometric drill and oh those wailing solos. I used to listen to it a lot in the 90s in my car on the way home from college.
I honestly think not knowing the source material is really great for seeing a show for the first time. Then hearing the source material can give you a better appreciation for the show and let it grow over time
I will never forgive the producer for taking shots of the color guard during the tenor solo. Still, this drum feature is what first sparked my interest in and awareness of DCI.
Technical director blundered that call - usually in live to tape broadcasting each camera is captured individually surprised they/ Tom blair never recut that If footage exist be nice to see
That was arguably the fucking BEST tenor solo ever played at DCI, but no gets to see 🙈 it... But here is a video showing it from the beginning of the 1990 season: ua-cam.com/video/nn7XoeXiCss/v-deo.html The video quality is shit, but you at least get to see 🙈 it.
This was before my time but I'm guessing had Star not went off like they did in 90 this could have won. Seemed like every caption was really strong and this was the era where BD was in crowd pleaser mode. Miss that part!
@@davidwarner3326 Was BD 4th? Or was SCV w/Carmen? I remember both shoes quite well. I honestly can’t remember placement. I know Garfield (sorry but I’m old and I still say Garfield) won, Cavvies were 2 & Star was 3. I don’t remember placement after that. 😂
@@davidwarner3326 Oh yes. Thanks for the reminder!!! That was the tie in ‘90. There was a tie in ‘91 going into Finals between Garfield & Madison as well.
This was Dci when it left you in awe the power of G horns writing and arrangements something young members in present corps will never experience no generators , electronics stringed instruments -just drums n bugles No were not relics to all these rude comments you. Kids love to post we just knew achievement hard work and without cell phones -it was about becoming your best and you can hear it in this era
@@davidwarner3326Of course, but sometimes, you must ask yourself, "How the heck did Wayne Downey instruct the 1976 Blue Devils AND the 2023 Blue Devils?"
Sometimes, the video editing at DCI was complete garbage back in the day. it's absolutely criminal that at the 9:00 mark in this video, the DCI broadcast cuts away from the insane tenor solo and points 👉 the camera instead at the snare line (while they're not playing) and then to the color guard. This is the most insane display of hands moving across 5 sets of 5 drums that NO ONE SEES 🙈!!! And the tenor line couldn't make it anymore obvious by giving a cue to the spectator: They take several steps backing away from the rack 🥁 right before their solo, and lean forward as if to say "Hey dudes, check this shit out!" Now, I don't want to take anything away from the color guard. They won top guard that year. But I'm sure they and the snare line would agree that sometimes the editing decisions at DCI just kind of shits all over 8 months of intense practice that should be showcased in a national broadcast. If you actually want to SEE 🙈 this tenor solo (as well as hear it) from a show at the beginning of 1990 season, check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/nn7XoeXiCss/v-deo.html The video quality is shit, but you get to at least see it.

Ahh, the No True Scotsman argument. There is no "real" DCI, either it's all real or it's all fake.

30 years old and still more entertaining than 99% of what's being fielded today. :)
And who designs today's shows?
@@davidwarner3326 Thanks for agreeing with me. Good night.
the greatest quad feature ever missed !
The drum solo blew me away back then and it still blows me away now! This is the most-memorable performance in my mind!
Same here. Always loved this one.
I marched Boston the year after this and we listened to the CD of this show on the bus all summer… CLASSIC
I can't believe how modern this show still is, from an arranger and visual designer's perspective. Timeless.
10:18 33 years later and I still get goosebumps!
Same
This is my favorite Blue Devils show of all.

This was the greatest drum line ever assembled!
Sherman Hong didn't think so. He gave them 6th place. Ouch.
Best drum book ever, I cannot listen this without air drumming and getting overhyped.
I personally know Cadet alum from ‘90 that laid claim that THIS was the best they had ever heard! This is like listening to a studio recording!
WOW! Very underrated show. Very clean.

If you haven’t, you should totally listen to “tommy” by The Who
I think this is the best written BD book ever. This ensemble was efffffffffin bad ass.
The one show they've done I wish they would revisit. Brilliant back then, bet they could rock it again now.
Considering the current state of dci/BD's artistic interpretation of what makes a winning show, I think it's better to leave this gem where it is.

great memories
Sure wish that drum solo was 2 minutes longer! If you want your notes meaty and extra crispy, here ya go!!!
My Band Director played contrabass in this show
Throughout the videotaped history of DCI, why do producers always focus everywhere EXCEPT the drumline during the feature??? 🤯
Because nobody cares? ;)
Huh?? There are multiple good shots of the drumline during the feature.
