  • This is the incredible ancient Kingdom of Hegra (Madain Saleh) in the AlUla region of Saudi Arabia! It truly is spectacular. If you've visited or seen pictures of Petra in Jordan then these images of Hegra may look familiar... And that is because Hegra is a sister-city to Petra which was the capital of the ancient Nabatean Kingdom!
It was fascinating to visit and learn about - and very interesting to visit by bus with so few tourists (less than 15 of us!).
We look forward to sharing more of our family travel adventures in Saudi Arabia!
    Thanks for watching! :)

How many kids in the world would be as devoted to their parent’s interests and as respectful as yours!! Both of you have done a great job with these kids, you’re role model to parents in the world.

being exposed to the world at this age, these kids will grow up to be phenomenal human beings, just like their parents. I'm delighted that I stumbled upon your channel. You guys are a breath of fresh air. if I may suggest one thing though, I follow lots of travelling youtubers, what interests me the most is the people, so if you film more of your interactions with the people you meet along the way, conversations, transactions and such, that would be the cherry on top of these lovely vlogs. safe travels! and welcome to Saudi.

being a tea addict myself, I am stumped every time I see one of those traditional tea kiosks in the middle of nowhere, It seems like its also the perfect place to have such a kiosk. Check those silver tea pots and that ideal backdrop. I am the only one that's missing in there sipping tea (LOL) Thank you for sharing, As much as you are enjoying seeing the remnants of an era gone by, I am enjoying my breaks with Saudi Arabian dates and Tea watching your clip. Keep them coming. Safe travels to all of you.

Nice video. However, you came in the wrong time of the year, it seems that you barely resisting the hot weather:)
Apart from mountains in the south which has a cool weather all year around, in fact a little bit cold in the winter, the rest of Saudi Arabia would be very hot in the summer, hot and humid in some parts, so the best time of the year to visit the country is during the winter - spring season which usually starts from late November up to March, the temperature in Alual at this time of the year will be around 10+ which is cool, I hope that you can visit Saudi Arabia again during the winter, I'm sure you will enjoy it way better, it actually snowing during the winter in the northern part of the country which might be surprising to many people.

📖The story at Madain Saleh is about Prophet Saleh whom Allah had sent to preach to the people of Thamud. He tried to call his people to the worship of One God, to Whom they should give thanks for all their bounties. He called upon the rich to stop oppressing the poor, and for an end to all mischief and evil, they refused to accept that Saleh was a messenger sent from God, so they asked him for a sign to prove his credentials. They asked him, in fact, not just for any sign, but something quite specific. They pointed at a huge rock that was standing by itself, and proposed to him that he ask his God to create a she-camel out of it.Despite their obstinacy, Saleh did this, on the condition that they would believe in God if he produced the she-camel from the rock, and to this they agreed.Saleh then prayed to God to answer their request. The huge rock moved and split, and from it came a wonderful she-camel, which was pregnant and soon to give birth. Some of them believed and followed the messenger and some didn't rather they killed the she camel and her calf not only that but they also challenged Saleh to bring down the punishment of God upon them if he was, indeed, a Prophet. Despite their scoffing and scorn for his message, the people were destroyed. Saleh and the people who believed in Allah moved from that place, never to return.
{ To the Thamud people was sent Saleh, one of their own brethren. He said, “Oh my people! Worship Allah; there is no other god but Him. Now comes to you a clear sign from your Lord! This camel is a sign for you, so leave her to graze in Allah’s earth, and let her come to no harm, or you will be seized with a horrible punishment. And remember how He made you inheritors (of the land) after the ‘Ad people, and gave you habitations in the land. You build for yourselves palaces and castles in open plains, and carve out homes in the mountains. So bring to remembrance the benefits you receive from Allah, and refrain from mischief and evil on the earth. The leaders of the arrogant party among his people said to those who were powerless - those among them who believed - “Do you know for sure that Saleh is a messenger from his Lord?” They said, “We do indeed believe in the revelation which has been sent through him. The arrogant party said, “For our part, we reject what you believe in.So they hamstrung the she-camel and were insolent toward the command of their Lord and said, ‘ O Salih, bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the messengers. So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone. And he turned away from them and said, ‘ O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the message of my Lord and advised you, but you do not like advisors.}(7:73-79). { So those are their houses, desolate because of the wrong they had done. Indeed in that is a sign for people who know. And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah.} ( 27:52-53).{ And [We destroyed] ‘Aad and Thamud, and it has become clear to you from their [ruined] dwellings. And Satan had made pleasing to them their deeds and averted them from the path, and they were endowed with perception.} (29:38) Translation of the meanings of Quran (the last and final revelation from Allah the creator of all.)
The life of the Prophet Saleh is also described in other passages of the Quran.

    For those who's wondering
    BCE mean Before Common Era
    CE means Common Era
These abbreviations are widely used in academic and scientific matters instead of BC & AD. It's a secular way to replace the terms BC ( before christ) AD ( anno Domini = in the year of the lord). Nevertheless all terms use the Gregorian calendar, which still uses Jesus’ life and times as an indicator. I don't like this new secular method myself

STORY OF PROPHET SALIH IN ISLAM
Prophet Saleh, sometimes written as Salih, was a descendant of the great prophet Nuh (may peace be upon him). He was sent by Allah to the nation of Thamud who lived in Al Hijr, located in Arabia. The nation over a few generations had matured and became very powerful, wealthy and influential.
The Qur’an mentions how the society grew very proud of their accomplishments and began building huge castles, palaces, and other structures as status symbol of their power. This is mentioned in Surah Ash Shura ayat 128-129:
“Do you construct on every elevation a sign amusing yourselves? And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you may abide eternally?”
They were given a chance by Allah to turn back to Him especially knowing what had happened to the people of Ad for their disobedience. The Qur’an mentions the warning from Prophet Hud who said, “Will you not fear Allah?” (26:124). They denied these warnings as obsession with materialism took over. They turned away from the path of truth, the poor began worshiping the rich who proclaimed themselves as Gods.

This is a background story of people who lived in this land, Al Hijr. I am posting it in several post.
So, please do not miss the following posts.
    ------------------------------------
(7:65) And to 'Ad51 We sent forth their brother Hud. He said: '0 my people! Serve Allah; you have no other god than Him. Will you, then, not avoid evil?'
    51. 'Ad, an ancient Arab people, were well-known throughout Arabia. They were known for their proverbial glory and grandeur. And when they were destroyed, their extinction also became proverbial. So much so that ttre word 'Ad has come to be used for things ancient and the word 'adiyat for archaeological remains. The land whose owner is unknown and which is lying fallow, from neglect is called 'adi al-ard.
The ancient Arabic poetry is replete with references to this people. Arab genealogists consider the 'Ad as the foremost among the extinct tribes of Arabia. Once a person of the Banel Dhuhl b. Shayban tribe, who was a resident of the 'Ad territory, called on the Prophet (peace be on him). He related stories to the Prophet about the people of 'Ad, stories handed down to the people of that region from generation to generation. (See Ahmad b. Hanbal, Musnad, vol. 3, p. 482 - Ed.)
According to the Qur'an the people of 'Ad lived mainly in the Ahqaf region which is situated to the south-west of the Empty Quarter (al-Rub' al-Khali) and which lies between Hijaz, Yemen and Yamamah. It was from there that the people of 'Ad spread to the western coast of Yemen and established their hegemony in Oman, Hadramawt and Iraq. There is very little archaeological evidence about the 'Ad. Only a few ruins in South Arabia are ascribed to them. At a place in Hadramawt there is a grave which is considered to be that of the Prophet Hud. James R. Wellested, a British naval officer, discovered an ancient inscription in 1837 in a place called Hisn al-Ghurab which contains a reference to the Prophet Hud. The contents unmistakably bear out that it had been written by those who followed the Shari'ah of Hud. (For details see Tafhim al-Qur'an, (al-Al. Ahqaf 46, n. 25.)
(7:66) The unbelievers among the leading men of his people said: 'Indeed we see you in folly, and consider you to be liars.'
(7:67) He said: '0 my people! There is no folly in me; rather I am a Messenger from the Lord of the universe.
(7:68) I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I give you sincere advice.
(7:69) Do you wonder that an exhortation should come to you from your Lord through a man from amongst yourselves that he may warn you? And do call to mind when He made you successors after the people of Noah and amply increased you in stature. Remember then the wondrous bounties52 of Allah, that you may prosper.'
    52. The word ala' used in the above verse stands for bounties, wondrous works of nature, and praiseworthy qualities. The purpose of the verse is to impress upon man to gratefully, recognize the favours God has lavished upon him, bearing in mind that God also has the Power to take them away.
(7:70) They said: 'Have you come to us that we should worship none other than Allah and forsake all whom our forefathers were wont to worship?53 Then bring upon us the scourge with which you have threatened us if you are truthful?'
    53. It is worth noting that the people of 'Ad neither disbelieved in God nor refused to worship Him. They did not, however, follow, the teachings of Hud who proclaimed God alone should he worshipped, and that none other may be associated in servitude to Him.
(7:71) Hud warned them: 'Surely punishment and wrath from your Lord have befallen upon you. Do you dispute with me about mere names that you and your forefathers have concocted54 and for which Allah has sent down no sanction? 55 Wait, then, and I too am with you among those who wait.'
    54. They looked to gods of rain and gods of wind, wealth, and health. But none of these enjoys godhead. There are many instances in our own time of people whose beliefs are no different from the ones mentioned above. There are people who are wont to call someone Mushkil Kusha, 'the remover of distress' or to call someone else Ganjbakhsh, 'the bestower of treasures'.
But God's creatures cannot remove the distresses of other creatures like themselves, nor do they have any treasure that they might give away to others. Their titles are merely empty words, bereft of the qualities attributed to them. All argumentation aimed at justifying those titles amounts to a lot of sound and fury about nothing.
    55. The Makkans could produce no sanction from Allah - Whom they themselves acknowledged as the Supreme God - that He had transferred to their false gods any of His power or authority. None has any authorization from God to remove distress from, or bestow treasures on, others. It is the Makkans themselves who arbitrarily chose to confer parts of God's power on those beings.
(7:72) Then We delivered Hud and his companions by Our mercy, and We utterly cut off the last remnant of those who called the lie to Our signs and would not believe.56
    56. The Qur'an informs us that God brought about the total extermination of the 'Ad, a fact borne out by both Arabian historical traditions and recent archaeological discoveries. The 'Ad were so totally destroyed and their monuments so completely effaced that the Arab historians refer to them as one of the umam ba'idah (extinct peoples) of Arabia.
The Arab tradition also affirms that the only people belonging to the 'Ad who survived were the followers of the Prophet Hud. These survivors are known as the Second 'Ad ('Ad Thaniyah). The Hisn al-Ghurib inscriptions referred to earlier (n. 51) above are among the remaining monuments of these people. One inscription, which is generally considered to date from the eighteenth century B.C., as deciphered by the experts, contains the following sentences:
We have lived for a long time in this fort in full glory, free of all want. Our canals were always full to the brim with water . . . Our rulers were kings who were far removed from evil ideas, who dealt sternly with mischief-makers and governed us according to the Law of Hud. Their edicts were recorded in a book. We believed in miracles and resurrection.
The above account fully corroborates the Qur'anic statement that it was only the companions of Hud who survived and inherited the glory and prosperity of the 'Ad.

This is a background story of people who lived in this land, Al Hijr. I am posting it in several post.
So, please do not miss the following posts.
    ------------------------------------
15:80) Surely the people of al-Hijr45 also rejected the Messengers, calling them liars.
    45. Al-Hijr was the capital city of the people of Thamud, and its ruins are found near the modern city of Al-Ula which is to the north west of Al-Madinah, and lies on the route from AI-Madinah to Tabuk. Though the caravans had to pass through the valley of Al-Hijr, the Prophet (peace be upon him) had forbidden the Muslims to stay in the valley on their journey.
When Ibn Batutah reached there in the eighth century of Hijrah on his way to Makkah, he wrote: I have seen the buildings of Thamud hewed into red mountains; the paintings look so bright as if they have been put on only recently, and rotten bones of human beings are found in them even today." See (E.N. 57 of Surah Al-Aaraf).
(15:81) We also gave them Our Signs, yet they turned away from them.
(15:82) They used to hew out houses from the mountains46 and lived in security.
    46. That is, their strong and secure buildings, which they had hewed into the mountains, could not protect them from the blast.
(15:83) Then the Blast caught them in the morning
(15:84) and whatever they had been earning proved of no avail.
(15:85) We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is in between them except with Truth.47 Surely the Hour will come. So, (O Muhammad), do graciously overlook them (despite their misdeeds).
    47. This was to reassure the Prophet (peace be upon him) that ultimately he would come out successful because he was propagating the truth, and the entire universe was based on truth. Such an assurance was urgently needed because at that time falsehood appeared to be triumphant over the truth.
This implies: O Prophet, do not worry at all at the apparent success of falsehood for this is temporary. Likewise the difficulties, the obstacles and the troubles in the way of truth are not permanent. Take courage, and have confidence in the cause of the truth and you will triumph over falsehood because the whole system of the universe is akin to truth and averse to falsehood. Therefore, truth is permanent and falsehood is perishable. Refer to (E.Ns 25-26, 35-39 of Surah Ibrahim).
(15:86) Your Lord is indeed the Creator of all, the All-Knowing.48
    48. These attributes of Allah have been mentioned to reassure the Prophet (peace be upon him) as if to say: As Allah is the Creator, He has complete power over all his creatures, and no one is able to escape His punishment. Moreover, He is All-Knowing.
He is fully aware that you are exerting your utmost for their reform, and He knows also their evil machinations against your efforts for reform. Therefore, you need not worry on this account, but you should wait patiently and with confidence that at the appropriate time they will be dealt with justly.

(15:87) We have indeed bestowed on you the seven oft-repeated verses49 and the Great Qur'an.50
    49. These seven verses which are recited over and over again in every prescribed salat are the verses of Surah Al- Fatihah. Though some of the commentators are of the view that this Al-Mathani, refers to the seven Surahs which contain two hundred or more verses, that is, Surahs 2-7 and (8-9) or 10. But the majority of the early commentators opine that it refers to Al-Fatihah. Imam Bukhari has cited two authentic traditions in support of the view that it refers to Al-Fatihah.
    50. The mention of the precious gift of the glorious Quran has been made also to console the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his followers that they should not even look at the worldly wealth of their opponents because that was nothing as compared with this precious wealth. In order to grasp the full significance of this, one should keep in view the fact that at that time the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions were suffering badly from poverty.
The trading activities of the Prophet (peace be upon him) had almost come to an end during the period in which he had been engaged in his mission. Besides this, he had almost used up the entire wealth of Khaijah (may Allah be pleased with her). As regards to his companions, some of the young men had been turned out of their homes and reduced to poverty. The economic boycott had mined the business of those who were engaged in trade. There were others who were mere slaves or proteges of the Quraish and had no economic position whatsoever.
In addition to their sad economic plight, all the Muslims, along with the Prophet (peace be upon him), were suffering persecution from the people of Makkah and its surroundings. In short, they were so much persecuted, ridiculed and insulted that no one of them was safe from physical and mental torture. On the other side, the Quraish, their opponents and persecutors, enjoyed all the good things of this world, and lived lives of happiness and luxury.
This is the background of the reassurance given to the believers, as if to say: Why should you feel disheartened at this? We have given you wealth which surpasses all kinds of worldly riches. Therefore, your opponents should envy your knowledge and high morals; you need not envy their ill canned wealth and their wicked enjoyments, for when they will go before their Lord, they themselves will find that they had not brought such wealth as carries any value there.
(15:88) Do not even cast your eyes towards the worldly goods We have granted to different kinds of people, nor grieve over the state they are in,51 but turn your loving attention to the believers instead,
    51. That is, do not grieve that they consider you as their enemy, though you are their sincere well wisher; that they regard their vices as their virtues; that they are not only themselves following but leading their followers on that way which inevitably leads to destruction. Nay, they are doing their best to oppose the reformative efforts of the one who is showing them the way of peace.
(15:89) and clearly tell the unbelievers: "I am most certainly a plain warner,"
    (15:90) even as We had sent warning to those who had divided their religion into fragments;
(15:91) those who had split up their Qur'an into pieces.52
    52. The schismatic were the Jews for they had split their religion into many parts and caused division in it. They believed in certain parts and rejected the other parts, and detracted some things from it and added others to it. Thus they had been divided into many sectarian groups, which were opposed to one another.
“They have made the Quran (Torah) into pieces” means that they believe in certain parts of it and reject other parts. The same thing has been stated in (Surah Al- Baqarah, Ayat 85) like this: Do you then believe in one part of the Scriptures and disbelieve in the other parts.
This warning is like the warning We sent to the schismatic Jews. This is meant to warn the disbelievers that they should learn a lesson from the plight of the Jews who neglected the warning that was given to than by God, and persisted in their wrong ways, as if to say: You are beholding the degradation of the Jews. Do you like to meet with the same end by neglecting this warning?
(15:92) By your Lord, We will question them all
(15:93) concerning what they have been doing.
(15:94) (O Prophet), proclaim what you are commanded, and pay no heed to those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity.
(15:95) Surely We suffice to deal with those who scoff at you,
(15:96) those who set up another deity alongside Allah. They shall soon come to know.
(15:97) We certainly know that their statements sorely grieve you.
(15:98) When (you feel so) glorify your Lord with His praise and prostrate yourself before Him,
(15:99) and worship your Lord until the last moment (of your life) that will most certainly come.53
    53. That is Salat and worship of your Lord are the only means which can generate in you that power of sustenance which is required to stand resolutely against the troubles and afflictions you will inevitably encounter in the propagation of the message of the truth and reform of humanity. This will comfort you, fill you with courage and enable you to perform that divine mission for which you have been sent in the face of abuse, derision and obstacles.
