Oh you don’t know how much I loved this video!!! So I was born in Southern California, down the road from Disneyland. I’m a huge Disney History buff. And this was just so amazing to learn about Walt’s deeper family history. Thank you! ❤
Always think it is funny how the medieval sculptors apply the concept of gravity just as they seem fit. Effigies are sculpted as if the person is laying on a bed. the dogs are also positioned in that way... however with the clothing the sculptors go like: nope, gravity doesnt exist. im just going to make the pleats flow neatly towards the feet 🤣 Or perhaps the laundry ladies just went bonkers with a packet of laundry starch. Thanks for a very informative upload again. always a joy to watch. God bless ☦
Hi Allan! I imagine the thought behind creating these impressive monuments was to extend the memory of their family. As the individuals memorialised were eventually forgotten, in the sense that was foremost in the minds of the creators of these lovely pieces of art, they took on the value we recognise today, witnesses to the historical period from which they were created rather than a single person or family.
Me too, however this type of piety still exists. It can be found in Orthodox Christian countries in certain traditional communities. often rural . far away from television and tiktok
@@1stAmbientGrl Still way more pious than today's society. Life very much was centered on the liturgical hours. fasting was generally observed, religious feast were celebrated, daily prayers were said and Church attndance was a very important thing. Of course there were brothels and street hookers, alcohol, extramarital rumpy-pumpy etc. But life in general still was very pious as still can be witnessed in remote Orthodox Christian communities...... compared to today's society with all the degenerates roaming about
Fascinating fact, it being D'Isney originally! I must admit I had a small chuckle when I saw poor Joan Disney in effigy, with her little chicken feet sticking out of the bottom! It just felt like the Disneys have always had a touch of Donald Duck about them...
It is a french name actually..... d'Isigny. they came from France. it just has been Anglicised to Disney. they came over to England with the Norman conquest.
Another beautiful and evocative place of worship, and another well-informed tour! All that was missing was "When You Wish Upon a Star" playing faintly in the background 😜 While some churches I've been in, in western North America, have columbaria for cremated remains, I've never been in a church in this part of the world which contains tombs. I imagine by the time settlement was happening in the 19th century, the custom had been put aside for hygiene or other reasons. But I find the sense of generations of families worshipping in the same place conveys a spiritual power to English (and other Old World) churches.
@@Herr_Flick_of_ze_GestapoThey Disney s themselves would have changed their name. It wouldn't have been forced on them. Otherwise he'd of been known as Walt d'lsigny.
@@jasonallen6081 please demonstrate where I have ever said anything about "being forced onto them" ??? I JUST corrected Peggy because she spelled the name wrong.
I never thought about graveyards shifting the ground so much. Thank you for a very interesting video. I will never get to see these places in person, so I truly enjoy you sharing your travels and knowledge with all of us. I hope you didn’t have to take out a second mortgage to pay for an entrance ticket to Medieval Disneyland. lol
I love Disney videos, toy review videos, and history/archaeology videos, and I think it's fantastic when there is a crossover between some of these things! I enjoy your channel so much!!
What a fascinating video, thank you so much. Your descriptions give honor to and bring about interest in the lives of those who lived so long ago. As an American who grew up with and loved everything Disney, this was a treat! Love your channel.
Thanks for posting this! I'm a direct descendant of these Disneys and know their names well. The Disneys (at least my branch) ended up at The Hyde in Ingatestone Essex. My grandfather lived there. Walt dropped by The Hyde in 1949 and wanted to chat to my g. great Uncle Norton about buying the large house - he wasn't interested. Norton sent him away to his half brother. My cousin was present as a young child! Everything and everyone long gone now. But, these monuments are still here. I'll visit them next year. Thanks again. Really nice and informative video.
Your lectures continue to be interesting and educational. I thoroughly enjoy that like me, you enjoy investigating old churches. When visiting my cousin in Chesham, we frequently go on outings to see old country churches. When home in the US, I like to check on older churches here, though certainly not as old as those in your area. Newer churches have also proved interesting too, but not like the relics!
How interesting Allan! And another memorable ramble through a truly important, extant church with such a deep history. The monuments are extraordinary and clearly the Disneys had power and wealth across generations.
I’m really enjoying your videos I am such a history buff and have always had an interest in English churches cathedrals and whose buried there. I just watched your st pol and Disney videos and wanted to ask. Were the pols related to the Disneys? I was searching up on George st pol and below it shows a list of his relations. His wife faith and children then it has listed as his mother Jane Disney and I wanted to know if I’m reading it right? And did some of the pols and disneys marry?
Hi Allan, I've watched documentaries which state that Walt Disney has Irish roots too!! Do you know how true this is?! Thanks for yet another VERY INTERESTING video!!💖💚👍
He did, some of the descendants of these Disneys settled in Ireland in the 17th century (along with other hard line Protestants) and it is from this line Walt is descended from. The main line of Disneys in Lincolnshire died out in the 18th century.
It could be to remove a "superstitious image" before Dowsing or his ilk arrived in the mid c17. That would save the rest of the plaque from being removed by the iconoclasts. In our church, we had only one brass survivor (dated 1608) of such a visit and that was because the inscription only had the name of the deceased and the date of his death
As an antiquarian you may disagree, but as a faithful Catholic that believes the height of Christian culture and the Church was in the medieval era, I believe the church should be restored to how it looked during that period, with all the wonderful colors and iconography, and if possible, to be used again in the way it was originally built for...and, well, just my opinion, to be Catholic again 😉
This video made me wonder about something, so I did a quick check and, sure enough, the Disney coat-of-arms is placed prominently above the gate of Sleeping Beauty's Castle in Disneyland.
Sadly there is precisely zero evidence that Walt Disney had any connection with Norton Disney. Yes he did come in 1949 thinking there was a connection. However what most do not realise there were many branches of the Disney family. One branch were the lords of the manor at next door Swinderby. Another branch lived in the decent parish of Carlton le Moorland. There was also a branch in North Lincolnshire at a place called Kingerby. The Carlton le Moorland branch eventually moved to Somerton Castle for a period. There were also Disney family members in Nottinghamshire. All these places you can see traces of the Disney family. So may be worth exploring those as possible connection too with Walt
Lovely :) Much nicer than the gaudy bling of Snarford imo. RobsLondon channel recently did a video about Walt Disney's trip to Disney Street in Southwark which was probably on the same visit as the one to Norton Disney ua-cam.com/video/MTLN5bqQuds/v-deo.html
You didn’t show any proof he was of the family! The history of ennobled family’s can be traced back for up to 1200 years. It was not uncommon for us peasants in the Middle Ages to call ourselves after the town or village we came from as family names were uncommon at the time!
Indeed so, my own surname is a place-name surname. Not in this case though, as Norton Disney was not known as Norton Disney until the 18th century and people from this place were more likely to call themselves de Norton. Iunderstand that Walt Disney could trace himself to these Disney's through a younger son who went to Ireland in the 17th century.
@@allanbarton Dear Allan, You are doing such a wonderful service documenting and sharing Lincolnshire history with us. We share a surname of Barton as well. Its a shame really, old Walt didn't have any interest in the English part of his ancestry at all. He maintained his family was Irish and before that French. He always admired France and wanted to build a resort there.
That's right they were Irish, the descendants of these people where among the English who settled in Ireland in the 17th century. He did apparently visit this place and his ancestors tombs.
