- Young PA hunter takes a 7 foot blonde phase black bear with his crossbow in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. This is his first black bear! The bear squared over 7 feet!
You can eat black bear. In fact, all healthy meat is edible, it's just a matter of taste preference.

I was asking the person who I replied to. He is basically saying shooting a bear over bait isn't really hunting and takes no skill. I was asking him how he hunts them, since I doubt he knows much about it.

I'm not much of a bear hunting fan, whitetail and rabbit are more up my alley.

Why do you think he didn't eat the meat? He never said that he wasn't going to eat it. You do realize that people eat bear meat...right?? I have a buddy who goes every year and he grills it up for us. Pretty good if you know what you're doing.

Arthur H, This is no Grizzly. Merely a large Black Bear in a cinnamon phase and not a blond as suggested. I have seen a blond Black Bear out East and I have seen a white Kemodi (Black Bear) on the West Coast. Grizzlies do come in blonde phases and far more commonly than with Black Bears,
A lot of thumbs down on this one probably because it's so short. Me I still liked it, you could have shown the bear a little better but still good.
So it turns out hunting bears over bait is the correct way to hunt them. In spot and stalk hunting its very possible to not see cubs following a sow because of the underbrush concealing them. In baiting you are able to observe a bear for a time to determine if it is a sow with cubs. Also, boars are the dominant sex at most bait sites. Boars kill, and eat, cubs. If you control the boar population more cubs are saved and you have a more stable population.
Bear is great to eat, it is not just for trophy hunting.

I’m not a hunter, but I can appreciate those that are, and especially those that practiced target shooting before the hunt to be sure it’s a killshot. THAT was a good shot.. The bear was out in seconds.. very minimal suffering

In "Meat Eater" Steve Rinella also writes that nearly all cases of trichinosis in humans in North America come from eating bear meat. He states you've got to simply assume that all bear are loaded with the parasites and cook it thoroughly.

***** tone it down a level you fuck. i bear bait all summer and i see the disappointment people have when they realize they're shooting maybe fifty yards max at an animal that is eating a bucket full of shit that i've been feeding it for the past 12 weeks so it's programmed to be in that spot. there is no challenge, it can hardly even be called hunting.

I'm not against hunting....especially if you're going to eat it...but I'm not that crazy about this method. Go find it...stalk it...make it fair.....make it worth something. Anyone can leave bait out, attract a bear and shoot it from the (relative) safety of a tree. I prefer real hunting. Just my opinion.
Our intelligence as human beings enables us to not have to stalk if we so choose to not stalk. Many a cavemen were killed using the stalking method. This is more than just my opinion,,, It is the TRUTH. Sure feels more here atop the food chain.

I agree 100% there should be a law you have to hunt on foot and go one on one with any animal. I think that is only fair you already have a gun or bow so you have the the upper hand from the start. The only hunters that should be in a stand should be someone disabled that cannot hunt on foot and needs to be in one. Also you should only be able to use scent spray or callers not just leave bait laying around anywhere so the animal will just walk up to you. Just like Sara this is just my opinion... If it's such a no no, why the hell did you click on the video? Videoing hunting is no different than videoing fishing, racing, football, etc. It's a favorite passtime for many people and with it comes great memories. Why not video it to preserve the memory?

This animal was killed ethically and legally. Bear hunting from an elevated stand allows the hunter to correctly identify each bear and to be close enough to take an ethical kill shot with the crossbow. Fair chase hunts for black bears is legal but it is much more difficult to identify each animal. It's hard to see the Cubs sometimes and a wet sow might get mistakingly shot. Which is illegal everywhere. So most commonly hunters who are doing things the ethical and legal way are killing bears this way. They bought a licence and now they tag it and register it at the dnr office. The meat is good if it's taken well care of and the hide will be preserved on this Cinnamon for sure.

The bear did move quite a bit after being shot. I'd be slightly worried about
the integrity of the arrow.
It's done. Those bears knock down small trees, imagion what their muscular bodies do to and arrow while in the vitals and it runs away.

I'm not an expert, so forgive my ignorance. Why was the bear taken down so quickly? Was it because it was a straight shot to the heart or something? Or just an incredibly powerful shot?

The arrow most likely took out both lungs. This would prevent the bear from running and having a quick death.

In hunting and game-cooking guru, Steve Rinella's (plenty of his stuff on UA-cam,by the way) "Meat Eater: Adventures from the Life of an American Hunter"--published just this year. He states that bear meat is a total crapshoot. It all depends on what the critter has been eating recently. Salmon-eating bear tastes fishy. Berry-eating bear tastes delectable and carrion-eating bear tastes tastes like death warmed over.

Black bears will sometimes lighten up their hair color at the salon in the hills....lol... No, they go through color phases like people do. Some lighten up, then go dark. Others just stay black. You'll see more blonde in the spring when they shed their winter coats. We had one in the yard the other day that was way blonde, like a Grizzly. Thats all I can help...

Yes you do eat the meat. Black bear meat is one of the best dishes you will ever have if it is cooked correctly

bear sausage is very sweet. depends on the bear though, you want ones feeding on berries, not fish. a friend cut a slice of sausage and let me try it, I didn't know what it was. it was quite good, and a sweetness to it. told me it was his black bear he had gotten.
Thomas...even though you are not a hunter, thank you for being respectful and asking a serious question. To answer, yes sir, bear meat is very good. You get a lot of meat from bear that can be made into steaks, roasts, sausage, hamburger, and jerky.

why the bear went down so quickly? I think it hit his shoulder not head so why he went down so fast? any idea? nice vid by the way.
Because he hAd a shot placement in the vitals hunters have to shoot behind the shoulder as the shoulder blade can potentially block a shot.
Hunters usually aim for the lungs/heart on big game animals as it is a fairly big target and is considered a quick humane kill. Head shots can result in a miss where the hunter could shoot the lower jaw off the animal and the animal could flee and die later on this is why hunters aim for the vitals.
