+Valerie Mercer it's always a good idea to know what you're in for especially since this fabric can be pricey. If you like the look, maybe start small like creating sequin appliques to put on a garment or just making a small portion of the garment with sequins. :)
For mesh backed sequin fabric, an underlining may be advisable. You came close to talking about that when you mentioned organza interfacing, but underlining is a slightly different concept. Basically you sew the underlining to the fashion fabric and treat both layers as one piece of fabric.
Okay, I think I get it...stitch an under lining to the original fabric or fabric pieces and then they can be my seam allowance? Or? Please clarify... thanks so much!
Interfacing adds controled structure to speciffic areas of a garment. It usually removed from darts and seam allowences. An underlining however adds more all-over structure, and is treated as one fabric with the fashion fabric. In the case of sequin fabric with a mesh backing, a thin satin is the common choice for underlining, while silk organza would be the common choice for interfacing. It's in how you treat the inner construction.
Home sewing is great. it is our foundation of sewing but some things need a industry approach such as sequin. when you have the time/ if you want to do all of the steps in the video then by all means do but if you don't have the time/don't want to, just sew straight through the sequin and you will still have a beautiful result. look at the sequin garments at the stores and you will see that they have sewn through the sequin and the garment is still great.
That's very true. However, my non industrial machine, is probably not comparable to the ones in factories...not all are created equal... I'm sure we need to know which one is at the level high enough to handle that type of fabric and sequin...
@@alygarden9875: It's not the machine, its the needle. All sewing machines can go through sequin. What I mean by industrial approach is sewing time. In the industry they don't have time to remove the sequin from the seam allowance. Now if you're a couture house then by all means you have time to remove sequin.
I do prom and bridal alterations. With this kind of fabric I normally just sew the fabric together without removing any sequins. If the sequins stay popped up I trim them after the seam is sewn. On beaded fabric the same I sew it without removing any beads I add beads to hide where I've been if a gap happens because of large beads. I leave all the excess because most of these girls re-sell their prom gowns. If I end up doing the same gown for someone else and it needs let out I know the excess is still in their to let out. :)
I use this fabric daily too for things I sell and never trim the sequins! My needles have never broken sewing through the tiny 3mm sequins like demonstrated!
We bought dance outfits where they had just cut the fabric through the sequins and didn't remove them from the seam allowance. The girls were bleeding after the first performance because the cut edges were so sharp they cut through the serged edges and then into their skin...all around their legs and under their arms. Needless to say they had to be taken apart and resewn properly. This technique might work for you but I wouldn't recommend it for everything.
Excellent effort in attempting to educate people. But I'm afraid this has served to scare people away from working with this gorgeous fabric. The type of fabric with which you have demonstrated can be sewn just as you would do any other fabric, just use a new needle. No need to remove all those sequins. Just line the garment. Just remember, home sewers, stick to a simple pattern, this particular type of sequin fabric, use a new needle and you can have a beautiful piece of fashion wear you will be proud of. Do not be afraid. I promise you.
I admit, I was like HECK no. Too much work, time consuming.... NOT worth it😟. But that would be AWESOME if it could be sewn by machine after all👏👏. You said just use a new needle ... i cant believe my eyes ... omg if you have the time to do it this way then well done ... i have been sewing for 30 years and this way of doing this is so long winded .
I had bought the exact same mesh fabric sequin cloth and the easiest way for me was to simply sew the fabric to a store bought slip of the same colour as sequin cloth. That way I did not need to attach any lining and my dress was ready in half an hour. Of course, I hand sewed everything and used the mesh margin and not the sequin area for attaching it to the slip. The strap of the slip became my dress strap and it looks very stylish.
Thank you so much! My fabric is not FULL sequins like your demo, but I still plan on using your techniques. Also, I plan on using my seam ripper and paper scissors to clip off the sequins near the seam, and also finish with a french seam. I going to test this on scrap fabric. I let you know how it comes out.
This is a lovely couture technique. Wow! Love the idea of taking the time to remove all sequins from the seam allowance, then hand sewing them back to cover the seam lines. I feel like a slug for just cutting and sewing thru them.
I made a skirt with glass bugle beading, so I had to break them using a small pair of plyers. The glass flies everywhere but then you have lovely clean seams which can then be sewn. I kept all the spare beads to sew back on. Looks amazing and I didn’t break even one needle in my machine that way.

Thanks for this video - very informative! I was wondering if you could help me. I have another issue with sequined fabric. I have a blouse made from stretchy mesh-like fabric with sequins sewn into it with several swirls and loops. When I put the blouse on, at least a handful of sequins fall off! How can I stop this from occurring? Thanks so much!
I have mesh sequined fabric in magenta, and plan to line my garment with a matching cotton. Can I just use a strip of the same cotton to reinforce the mesh where I put in my zipper?
Why you readin my name? Just try it and you will never get better if you keep saying you’re horrible at it you’re not you’re just learning and you’re going to make mistakes but that’s part of the learning process don’t put yourself down about it
I recommend a lining for comfort since the fabric on the inside is not entirely soft against the skin. Also, it can be somewhat see-thru. With a lightweight lining, it shouldn't affect the drape of the garment that much.
I have a really nice flat sequin material, but I would like to do some appliqué pieces on it? Do you have any tips for appliqué on this type of material?
hmmm...I haven't tried to add applique to this type of fabric. I would practice on a scrap with a small sample applique first. If it was me, I would remove all the sequins in the area the applique would be and then hand sew the applique on. After, if there's any weird bald spots, hand sew individual sequins to cover them.
I need help... I bought dress made of sequins fabric & its too long for me. With normal fabric I would cut it & seam it quite easily but with this one I dont know where to start or how to do it... because i need to fold to seam & basically to sew through double amount of sequin
Fold it up the amount that you need to hem it, (if you need to cut off some excess then you can do that but you may have to cut off some sequins to make it easier to cut the fabric since you should use cheap scissors to cut through sequins.) Then hand sew the hem into place using a blind hem technique
well, the easiest way to do this is to fold the extra length of strap and tuck it into the inside of the dress on the backside so you can't see it. Then I would just hand sew this into place. You'll be able to see it on the inside of the dress but it's much more simple then trying to remove seams and sew it back into place without doing any damage.
Which number needle did u use while sewing the fabric while sewing it on machine?? as I too want to stitch a blouse so it will be really helpful for me😁
If you remove the sequins from the seamline, you can use whatever needle is appropriate for the type and weight of the fabric underneath, like a microtex 70/10. If you're just plowing right through them, then you'll probably want a leather needle but it could be risky depending on your machine.
bias binding on sequins fabric? it would be the same process since you're still doing a seam and want to avoid stitching through the individual sequins.
well i haven't faced any of these problems while working with this fabric 2 years earlier. Although it was my first time. The issue was that the fabric itches while removing the dress and in armpits while wearing it. Nothing else. So i think it can't be helped.
You have to do things like armholes with a matching fabric that has no sequins. We have this problem with dance outfits and I usually make a band out of velvet to cover the sequins on the edges
Would yo share where did you buy that beautiful blush sequin fabric? I was thinking on sewing for new year a sequined t-shirt but I didn't find any fabric locally and did not wanted to spend money in a fabric without looking at it. Yours look beautiful! Thank you for your video!!!
it's the same as sewing with a sewing machine. If you remove the sequins and are just sewing on the fabric backing it shouldn't be an issue sewing with a serger.
yes, it's a very similar process, except instead of cutting out the sequins, you'll be breaking beads (that fall within the seam allowance area) with a hammer. You can apply painters tape to the seam allowance areas, hammer it, and then peel the tape off and most of the broken bead pieces should be on the tape, so it'll be cleaner.
+Ciarra W. (Personal) good question. I haven't been able to find video on that but, I just sew it very slowly and carefully and make sure your using a needle for leather :-) hope that helps
hello! i took a class online about couture sewing where the professor talked about silk organza, but it's not so available in my coutry so i asked her if the polyester organza would do the same work and she said "no". i tried to experiment and polyester organza is flowy and runs like hell, why do you recommend it? thank you!
I would refer to tips in our tutorial in working with chiffon: ua-cam.com/video/VwABl0bl11I/v-deo.html they're both annoying in the same kind of way. :) good luck.
I am currently sewing a gown that is mesh with embroidered sequin on it .. i am wanting to partially line the bodice but leave the sleeves unlined . what do you suggest i do to finish the armhole seams so that it doesn't show through the fabric ?
oh, pretty! If it were me, I think bias tape would be what I would try first. It'll probably look the neatest. I would use the 1/4" skinny bias tape if possible
I bought this on fabric.com. I would check out their site, because they have a lot so might have stretchy fabric. Also, maybe check out mood fabrics site.
+YoshiLover122 it is, but you have to know what you're getting into with this fabric...which is a good since it is so expensive you don't want to waste it. But the good news is that it isn't hard, just very time consuming.
+Jen Stosser you can't depend on me for correct pronunciations. :( I have a speech issue where I can't even tell if I say words correctly or not. I just do the best I can. :)
All that individual cutting is not nessesarry . just get a peice of sequins fabric cut it in half in any direction and see where it takes you has to be with a peice of fabric thats junk

I think those garments you're talking about were sewn with an industrial machine, which can handle seeing through the sequins, this tut is for domestic machines I believe
+Nico Reuel: the sequins fabric that is in the video along with lots of the sequin fabric that is in the fabric stores a home sewing machine can sew right through those. now the fabric that is bulky with sequins that has added things with the sequence then that cannot be sewn straight through but flat sequences such as being featured in the video your home machine can handle it
This video has taught me to never ever bother with sequinned material. A huge thank you to Dr. Pincushion! 🙂

it's the same as sewing with a sewing machine. If you remove the sequins and are just sewing on the fabric backing it shouldn't be an issue sewing with a serger.
where can i get this colour sequin fabric?

Would these tips also apply to beaded fabric?
yes, it's a very similar process, except instead of cutting out the sequins, you'll be breaking beads (that fall within the seam allowance area) with a hammer.

To sew leather you need to change your machine foot. It's called a Teflon foot.
+Cece we do have a video on working with leather: ua-cam.com/video/rFme6jPauJ8/v-deo.html hope that helps :)
hello! i took a class online about couture sewing where the professor talked about silk organza, but it's not so available in my coutry so i asked her if the polyester organza would do the same work and she said "no". i tried to experiment and polyester organza is flowy and runs like hell, why do you recommend it? thank you!
I would refer to tips in our tutorial in working with chiffon: ua-cam.com/video/VwABl0bl11I/v-deo.html they're both annoying in the same kind of way. :) good luck.
I hate polyester organza, it’s such a poor performing fabric. Go for silk organza. Always!
I am currently sewing a gown that is mesh with embroidered sequin on it .. i am wanting to partially line the bodice but leave the sleeves unlined . what do you suggest i do to finish the armhole seams so that it doesn't show through the fabric ?
i was thinking to do a bias tape but maybe there is a better alternative ... i am using a nude stretch lining as well
oh, pretty! If it were me, I think bias tape would be what I would try first. It'll probably look the neatest. I would use the 1/4" skinny bias tape if possible
How do you clean this type of fabric
look at the fabric bolt tag and it'll give you the care instructions. most likely it'll be dry clean only
arnold storr you can hand wash it that's what i do with the blouse i made with the same type of fabric.
Please don't use shingles to describe this fabric it hurts my mind.
Your hands are beautiful ❤
Where did you purchase stretchy sequined fabric?
I bought this on fabric.com. I would check out their site, because they have a lot so might have stretchy fabric. Also, maybe check out mood fabrics site.
Spandex World. They have everything
Thanks much
this is so helpfull thank you
oh wow, so much work! haha. Sequin dresses and skirts look so freaking amazing though.
+Crystal Punky they do! You just have to know what you're getting in to :)
Do you know of any places to buy sequinned fabric from?
I bought mine from fabric.com but there are many online sources to buy it from if your local fabric store doesn't carry any
Professor Pincushion Thank you I'll have a look on fabric.com
Its not hard as described, you can sew it without removing these dots... 🤔
Shubham Narnaware lol
i loved it
Guess I won't be using sequins for my NYE dress 😂
It starts out fine ...then gets real low after she says..lets get started.
Can't hear it .
SEQUINS.... THERE IS NO T IN SEQUINS.
can't hear the video...too low
I know!! It's so quiet
What a beautiful fingers..
I came here thinking I might be able to sew a beautiful dress 🙃 I will take my foolish optimism away with me. I will just pay for the store dress
"Sequence"
This terrifies me wow sequins are a lot of work!
+YoshiLover122 it is, but you have to know what you're getting into with this fabric...which is a good since it is so expensive you don't want to waste it. But the good news is that it isn't hard, just very time consuming.
did you call them "sequence"? No wonder people misspell the word!
+Jen Stosser if you can SEW then you know what she means :-) at least she spelled it correctly
+Jen Stosser you can't depend on me for correct pronunciations. :( I have a speech issue where I can't even tell if I say words correctly or not. I just do the best I can. :)
Amei
All that individual cutting is not nessesarry . just get a peice of sequins fabric cut it in half in any direction and see where it takes you has to be with a peice of fabric thats junk
Wear protective eyewear lol
I wish I could hear you .
this is far the advance sewer lol
That’s it , no sequin for me🙅🏾♀️
Gatekeeper
yesss...please stop calling the fabric "sequince "...
You speak too much
زهره اليوسفي wow you are a fool
Cool
Home sewing is great. it is our foundation of sewing but some things need a industry approach such as sequin. when you have the time/ if you want to do all of the steps in the video then by all means do but if you don't have the time/don't want to, just sew straight through the sequin and you will still have a beautiful result. look at the sequin garments at the stores and you will see that they have sewn through the sequin and the garment is still great.
