    I knew that Holst did bitonality, but TRItonlity??! Now that is interesting.

    • @MrHestichs
      @MrHestichs 6 років тому +4

      Then it's called polytonal. Bitonality usually is nomenclature assigned to chords! Like Cmaj/Ab is a bitonal chord. A triad with a base note :)

    • @lylecohen1638
      @lylecohen1638 3 роки тому +3

      @@MrHestichs C Major over Ab in the bass isn't bitonal, it's an augmented chord with a major 7th. A bitonal chord would be, say, C Major over Ab Major, so (from the bottom up) Ab C Em C E G. Bitonality is simply one kind of polytonality where there are only two scales at once.

    • @MrHestichs

      @@lylecohen1638 You could call it that yes. But it also reasonably be analyzed as a triad over a different bass note.

    Vaughan Williams in a letter to Holst: "I liked the old Trio - but always felt that its being in 3 keys was more seen by the eye than felt by the ear. After all, ‘Lovely Venus’ depends a lot on the ‘natural chord’ doesn’t it? I don’t think I like your notation. After all, key signatures are simply a means of avoiding accidentals - isn’t that so? And I believe that on the balance you wd get fewer accidentals by putting a christian key signature - & not, incidentally, make unhappy people like me who try to play them on the pfte permanently cross-eyed."

    The differents keys provide new music or are they just an exercise on enarmony?

    I really like Holst but I'm not too keen on this one. Sounds like a few directionless motifs cast to the wind(s) in haphazard counterpoint.

      If you are expecting it to sound like the Planets, then you are probably on the wrong bus! Holst wrote a whole lot of music in a very different style to that famous orchestral work, and this one is really interesting on a compositional level. The skill required to make the polytonality of the three parts "work" is immense. However, I will agree with you that this is a much more interesting piece to play than it is to hear.

      @@musik350 Until you actually play the piece. I agree that it may seem aimless to the casual listener, but this piece is deceptively difficult to play, and at the same time an absolute delight to rehearse and perform. There IS an inner logic to the music, but this only becomes apparent with an intimate knowledge of where each of the three parts is going, and how ones own part relates to the other two. I do not deny that this music is going to provide the sort of excitement that can be found in The Planets, but it is far from being a few directionless motifs. That master of counterpoint, J S Bach, may not have enjoyed the tritonality of the piece, but I have no doubt that he would have applauded Holst's extraordinary contrpuntal skill.
