I’ve been using Windsurf for the past five days, and it’s absolutely incredible. To test the tool, I decided to create a simple yet practical web app for myself - the dictionary of AI tools I consider to be the state of the art. Despite having minimal technical experience and no prior knowledge of modern web frameworks, I was able to build and deploy the app online in just two days. Windsurf’s capabilities are truly impressive, and I’m excited to see what future updates will bring!
Hey! Congratulations on your success! I'm blown away by the capabilities of Windsurf Cascade IDE so far. Given I am no coder or programmer, I have developed an "Enterprise-level" Backup and verification system by accident while attempting to build a static page Resource library and.... well, it's um become something else entirely, do you know anyone who might be interested in any of the features in my comment above?

I downloaded it after watching this video. I didn’t like that you can’t copy paste images straight into it unless I miss something. Also I think it’s slower compared to cursor. The good things is that it actually helped me fix some issues that I’m having a little bit better than cursor did. The UI is also a little easier to navigate.
I’m coming back here to say that I’ve moved over to Windsurf! It’s amazing. I gave it a chance after some issues I had with cursor. I love the cascade feature too.

Seems to run multiple dev servers in the background which takes up lots of space. Best to run it in the terminal yourself then let the bot continue to work while you monitor and continue to code yourself. Mac ran out of storage realized WindSurf was using lots of GBs other than that I really like it. Almost too good…

For app coding: It’s gotten better but Cursor is best. I use both on the same codebase. Almost always Cursor has the better response and Windsurf is the plan B. For now.
Doesn‘t it use same llm claude sonet 3.5 ? So its output must be the same since both cursor and windsurf use claude ?
I understand that Claude and ChatGPT are included, but that they got their own model that does the main job. Did I get it wrong?
Afaik, the difference is how Windsurf assembles context. It splits your codebase into snippets and vetoes / ranks them using a fast small LLM under the hood. This way AI context does not get polluted with irrelevant stuff, which happens with Cursors’ embedded search.

very intersting. just tried it since I was curious about the multifile editing But on my first couple tests there were alot of unintended changes the editor makes ... I asked it to add 1 simple example method to 2 files but it contiually changes alot of things I didnt ask for and made a couple breaking code mistakes.

Windsurf absolutely KILLS Cursor and I was a Cursor fanboy. It just works. It works with you... I could see it being extremely good for newer devs too as Cursor is messy as, and the context management is atrocious.
Gosh I wish they used PR's as the interface for these AIs. Why are we even using editors at this stage, that should be a last resort with PRs being the primary interface.

Wait, cursor also have composer which you can add related files so the AI can do many task base from the context of those input files. Cursor can also detect the related files base from my request and work with them. So... Windsurf did this better, I do feel abit annoy when I have to specific the files that relate to my problem. if Windsurf can access to all the source code in the project. What would be a big win imo
The diff is Cursor uses vector search to assemble context, or manual file tagging. Windsurf’s Cascade uses LLM snippet ranking, a way precise mechanism. I do not know how they made it cheap.

well according to the current Windsurf pricing the "Pro" tier is no longer $10 / month.. it's $15 / month... so if Cursor is better I rather pay $20 for cursor. unless Windsurf has a big advantage which I doubt it has.
this video is *MISLEADING* since Windsurf is NOT LOCAL (because you need to "login" in order to use it - even if it is installed "locally") and NOT FREE (you can not do anything of substance with the free tier). just to put the facts on the table.
Sooo... I kinda did a thing. I am no developer much less an experienced coder or programmer but in the last four days using prompts and Windsurf Cascade IDE, I managed to create... um idrk but it's called the Trinity Framework, from what I can tell it uses Python, SHA 256 Backup and Verification software (apparently enterprise-grade), pattern recognition integrated NLP, FastAPI, and a comprehensive testing suite... I have about 4 GoogleLM deep dives that are, interesting but I guess you could say I found a way to overcome the resource_exausted limits *nervous chuckle... If anyone could offer advice as to where I can find someone to take a quick look at this... thing. I think it might be useful for something. This concludes my TED Talk, thank you

It’s good, but it’s not free and not local, unless I’m missing something, lol
To be fair. It is free. There is a free model you can use, the "Cascade Base" model is free to anyone still at this point in time and they have not made any indications yet that I have seen that they are indenting to switch this model to a paid plan. The other two models (Gpt 4o and Claude 3.5)are paid, but if you use up the free uses you get of those, it switches to the free model. It does select the Claude 3.5 model by default each time, so if you want to save the premium credits you have to manually change it when you start up. But unlike a lot of these kinds of services it is actually possible to do so.
As a note I think the Cascade Base model is based on llama3.1 70b model. Don't quote me fore sure on that but I'm pretty sure I saw that somewhere when I was looking at something else at one point.
That all said. I agree. I would not consider it 'Local' as you can't use your own models, as far as I am aware, with their cascade feature which is the main selling point with Windsurf AI.
Aide is another IDE, a fork of VS Code, that can be local, but I have issues getting Ollama to work with it. I am looking for a program like Aide or Windsurf which is local, doesn't require me to hand over my email ideally, and can easily run local models; For both Code and Writing use cases. Windsurf is my favorite such application to date, it just can't run local models...

I tried 5 tasks with cursor and windsurf and all 5 were failed with cascade and claude 3.5... but what's intereseing, I'm using the same model in cursor and fixes were successfully completed for all 5 tasks
i'm not sure, maybe there some hidden options in windsurf or it's because of trial pro version or because I'm using beta 200k context in cursor, but after this video I faced up with disappointments :(
cursor has a lot shitty small bugs like it can't see context of copy-pasted code in chat, but in general it's kind'a good integrated AI with great task completion...
Unfortunately windsurf is no longer a free IDE. It is practically useless without the premium plan

Windsurf it's not "Free". And if you want more option (same for Cursor: it's NOT Free) you need more credits!
And so.... again fake "Free software" that you pay for bad quality. After 2 weeks you realize all you credits are gone because the software makes so many errors that it need to fix them. And of course it uses your credits that for!
So disappointed of Cursor right now, we need serious alternatives!
