Interview with Marcus, the Reef Nerd

- I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Marcus, a fellow reefing UA-camr to talk about his incredible tank, his approaches to reefing and how he's gone about documenting his journey via UA-cam so far.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it, Marcus is a great guy with an incredible tank. Be sure to get over to his channel and check out his videos!
/ @reefnerd
you guys are awesome. i got the auto aqua water change system after Marcus recommended it.
Glad you enjoy the footage!
The tank is to small for the corals. Then stares at the tangs!!!!!
Great video! Marcus..have you ever thought about dosing more in the daytime and less at night? That should reduce your wing.
Its been in the back of my mind, definitely something to look at for 2020
@@ReefNerd sounds like a great task for the new Ecotech Versa! If your current pump is limited like mine. I could keep my current program running just for the day and at about 1800 to 0700 run a reduced program on the Versa.
ooooh yeah, versa time!
Great video Sam beautiful looking tank 👍
Thanks mate!
Love that packed tank!
Soooo much stock
Sam, when are you doing a video on the clowns you were going to get for the tank you were setting up from scratch. ?
Or have I missed that video ?
Clowns are still to come. Been a touch busy and want to make sure the tank is 100% ready for them :)
Too many corals for your tank, eh? Don't mind the two tangs, each requiring a tank 3 times this size, minimum? Terrible.
Check out Marcus channel now, he has a big upgrade underway for those tangs :)
Wow, my two favourite UA-cam reefers in one video! Love your work guys and I've been lucky enough to visit both of your home's personally and purchase frags from you both (which are doing really well). If you think Marcus' tank looks awesome on the video you should see it in real life. It's certainly high tech compared to ours but it's a miniature version of what I hope to achieve in our 1000lt system. And of course Sam Parkers' tank is just as impressive but he has much larger colonies. Well done on a great video guys and I did learn something about dosing whilst watching, what a bonus
thanks for watching John!
1:32 Never heard so much bullshit. But tank still looks amazing!
Harsh!!! But yes, his tank is amazing
Awesome - Reef Nerd is an incredible channel - the reviews are super good. I don't know why Buff Marcus calls himself Reef Nerd though - I would have liked him to answer that question Sam - you need to be more hard hitting in your interview mate.
I was thinking about getting the AutoAqua AWC but I thought Marcus was using the Kore 7 for that - I think I will get that now. I was researching the reviews on BRS (that is my go to check) and they aren't super positive but mostly on the pumps and if Marcus is happy with it that's good enough for me ;)
Isn't the Giessemann Stellar fixture available in Australia? I would go that one anyhow. I can get both here in the EU but for the basic (non dimmable) version the Stellar is cheaper (slightly) than the AI.
Interesting to here about the comparison between growth rates based on the narrower reflector. As I want a shallow & wider tank (like 120x80x40) I was thinking with the hybrid I would use LEDs with wider or no lenses so that the PAR drops quicker from the top to the bottom of the tank. Now this comment has me thinking.
The question of trace elements dosing on a Calc Reactor is interesting. I'd like to see the results of that. I personally I am thinking of using Kalk Wasser and then bring in Tropic Marin Carbo Calc on my build - just because it can be so concentrated. I also asked Dr Balling if I could combine Kalk with Carbo Calc plus the Tropic Marin trace all in my ATO - the answer was yes. That Reef Nerd doses by 3 methods is the Nerdiest thing he does but I feel like it's way overly complex. What I really don't get is how he still has a 1 dKh / day swing. With the kH Lab he should be able to dose enough to keep up with it and get rid of the swings. One benefit of the Carbo Calcium is that the kH is synthesized (not sure if this is the correct term) so it doesn't spike kH. The negative is I heard (once) there is huge build up in the pumps.
Anyhow this was an awesome interview - more of this please ;)
absolutely strange that he calls himself reef nerd! And yes, I agree - more interview like this are needed :)
I love this tank no B.S....and man that tank would be one of the best around if he had just blacked out the back pane of glass...no bs all i could look at was that dam cord half the time what a eyesore for how much was invested in time and $...def black out your tanks it adds depth...besides that just a stunning aquarium 🍻 yall :)
Yeah not a bad point, would certainly allow those beautiful corals to pop in colour even more
poor blue tang they sayd they ae nerd of equipement forgeting de basic this tang really to smal for him w.f just look at it the nerd reef omg.... for the love of fish coral dosent move a lot so... but the blue tang MOVE A LOT .
check out his channel now, has a brand new tank on the way :)
Wow this seems like dosage overkill. I have a 25gal with just Kalk dose and weekly water changes.
If that’s working well for you, that’s great!!
$10k or more just underneath the tank alone. Well organized. Can certainly look and get overwhelming. Whew....
It’s a serious setup hey!!
Awesome videos man, nothing like being able to do what you love. It shows
Cheers dude!!
Gorgeous tank, but so many potential failure points..
It's certainly a complex setup, but working well so far :)
Looks like a hurricane is happening outside! Lolol
Melbourne Australia, never know what the weather will bring :P
I love the scape and coral selection in Marcus' tank. The harmony is something I can only dream of.
His overkill calcium/carbonate dosing system is not doing him a favour, though. There is plenty of evidence of tanks of similar size and coral density, being kept with 3-part, just fine.
If I got it right, he said the daily consumption can be up to 1dKh, which is pretty high, but not uncommon. That is equivalent to 113ml of Randy's bicarbonate (or 56ml of carbonate), which is not a lot.
I've seem a handful of people assume it is consumption, just to realise it was actually precipitation.
Hey thanks for noticing the scape, I put a fair bit of thought into its design!
One thing to clarify, my daily swing *despite* my dosing is as high as ~1dkh, that is not my consumption. In terms of consumption its equivalent to approx 350ml of carbonate per day, probably more at this point.
I'm waaaay too slow to reply to this, but I agree - the scape is a ripper. Really maximises the real estate in this tank
I have no idea how, but in USA I started watching UA-cam for the first time on a regular basis watching Parkers reef, getting back into the hobby after years out I was jealous of the Australian corals shown and access that seemed to exist
Ah thanks for watching mate!!
Looks great. Can you tell us a little about your flow and why you chose to mount your pump on the back wall vs the sides?
So I have 1 gyre on the back wall and one on the right hand side of the tank. I find by having 1 on the back wall and 1 on the side, it creates a really random flow pattern which the corals seem to like. Both gyres are on pretty random programs, separate from each other and at times run in reverse for a while as well.
I don't think I can add anything more to what Marcus has said. Love me some random flow!
Loved this interview! so much personality and casualness so it wasn't boring or slow and it was super informational! being a freshwater enthusiast watching videos like this really make me reconsider which side of the hobby i'm meant to be in hahahaha!!!
Always room for another tank dude!!
Did he say boring clam? Whats a boring clam? I have no idea what that is.
They are bad news for lps coral!
Parkers Reef Thanks! I searched the web and found no info or pics of it. Maybe you can do an episode about boring clams. 😊
Try boring mollusc :)
Parkers Reef Thanks! Found it! Now I understand! Boring Bivalves. Web search results of boring clams came out to: Are clams boring. Boring mollusc came out with boring bivalves. 😂😂😂
@@iczerone2000 hahaha well, they are anything but boring! Annoying yes, but far from boring :P
If you need a product that isn't available in Australia... Buy me a plane ticket and I will bring it with me!
Hahaha expensive way to do it!!
WAHOU, un magnifique aquarium, merci pour ta vidéo !!! 👍👍👍
Merci!
Lots of good info with great explanations.
I was happy with how it came out! Marcus is a smart guy so I wanted to get as much info as o could from him :)
Great video!!!
Thank you!
Nice 👍
Cheers :)
