  • An animated recreation of the Great North Road from London to York in 1832! Takes quite a bit less time now the A1 exists... Passing through Waltham Cross, Ware, Buckland, Arrington, Huntingdon, Alconbury Hill, Stilton, Stamford, Stretton, Grantham, Long Bennington, Newark, Scarthingmoor, Barnby Moor, Rossington Bridge, Doncaster, Askerne, Selby & York!
Over 20 hours in a horse and carriage must have been exhausting..

I thought that was pretty quick for a horse drawn vehicle.
I expected the journey to take several days.

By 1832, coaching had improved hugely. You are correct that 100 years earlier it would have taken 3 or 4 days to get to York but with improvements in coaches, roads and a staging system. They stopped only long enough to change horses and set off again.

Isn’t that the Old North Road? The Great North Road followed a different route out of London, via Finchley, Barnet etc.

The Great North Road is the Old Roman Road & Yes its different to this, it went through the Town of Biggleswade for over 1800 years

Thank you very informative to see how people travelled before the birth of Railways.

Interesting. However you have taken the route of the Old North Road between London and the Alconbury milestone, not the Great North Road. Also you have left the Great North Road at Doncaster. While I appreciate you are going to York and therefore using the coach road to York, it is not the Great North Road. That left Doncaster by the modern A638 and then follows (more or less) the modern A1 via Wetherby, Boroughbridge and Catterick. See "The Great North Road Then and Now"

I feel like I've been on an adventure now !! James Fox, you are a wizard, sir. I wonder what a journey using this same route might be like nowadays....

A long 5ime afterthe railways had been 8nvented. Seven after opening of the Stockton and Darlington, which was the first railway to use steam locomotives, and was at the timetable commutation of the best part of a century of railway developments Iin the UK. It's also 2 years after the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.

Great video. I was expecting the journey to also include the train and car times, so was disappointed when it got to the end .I had a day trip to Selby recently and walked round the Abbey - very impressive and beautiful inside.

I shall save those extra journeys for the other format (Travel in Three Centuries) I was hoping to complete the journey all the way to Edinburgh in future.

    Ha!
Got it completely wrong at the end, the entry into York......
    .
The A19 does not bring one in to Micklegate and Micklegate bar as the images depict.
Instead, entry would have been via the smaller St Georges/Fishergate Bar or the postern in Piccadilly.
    Please get the facts right!
If not, it just debases the rest of the presentation.

Understood. I intend to complete this journey to Edinburgh in future. However I couldn't find an interesting enough transition for Fishergate Bar so fell back on another iconic view of York regardless of its placement - will update the video when I continue the journey north with a more relevant scene.

I would note that the A19 didn't exist in 1832 (the old York to Selby road followed a more winding route that can still be traced crossing back and forth, either side of the modern connection) so it wouldn't bring you anywhere. Please get the facts right! If not, it just debases the rest of your comment.
Alternatively, you could try being less of an ass when raising points to avoid finding people like me ribbing you ^.~
If you're reading this, James, splendid work, as ever! ^_^
