Great video! I think a lot of Tatum’s issues getting over screens have to do with his effort levels on defense during this stage of the season. I don’t think it will be a problem come playoff time.

Thank you for bringing up Tatum's defensive struggles. For some reason there's a large amount of people who feel that Tatum's defense is superior to Brown's when that simply is not the case on average. He sometimes he is better than Brown on defense just like how Brown is sometimes better than him on offense. Either way, no one on the starting lineup is poor on defense or offense so this team is solid if Tatum and Porzingis are the individuals you want your offense to attack. We see that opposing teams put their weakest defenders on White and he has been racking up numbers like crazy. Brown and Tatum are transcending into a zone where they will get theirs no matter who you send their way so that is also nice to see.

Bro when Tatum is dialed in you can't score on him... He has been dial like that in the regular season until they play a top notch team

Give tatum credit for guarding the 5 and doing work down low, but i agree hes soft on the perimeter.

hopefully Tatum will actually try against screens in the playoffs but right now it just seems like he doesn't want to go over them. whether that's to save energy for offense or just him being lazy idk.

Probably a combo of both. NBA regular season is very very long, hopefully playoff time he locks in. I think the Celtics have a real chance this year!

I think its because he knows he doesn't have to 100% every defensive play because their team is so good at switching and its regular season, tatum defense always go up in the playoffs

C's used to put Smart on Embiid to good effect as well, I think all the reasons you mentioned are true, but another reason for it i think is that all his wild flailing just looks silly to the refs when hes against a guy half his size 😂

Great video! One small correction. Defensive rating does not equal points allowed per game, it's points allowed per 100 possessions.

Ohh, I would have described the lane collapsing the C's do if someone had asked me to, but I never actually thought of it as part of the system - which is kind of funny, in retrospect.
I really like Tatum playing free safety, or even the 5, bc he doesnt have to work to keep the play in front of him; all his best stops come when he's picking up from deep towards their baseline, and challenging out, where his reach and bounce are in full force. I think his lateral movement around screens is bad in part bc he's fixated on getting full credit for being fouled. it happens on both ends of the court. If he takes hard contact, he will try to sell it, rather than finish whatever he was doing before it, whether that's fighting through a screen, or actually finishing taking a shot. And if he doesnt get the call, he starts throwing his hands up, and looking at the refs, rather than playing through.
It doesnt make any sense to me. He idolized Kobe, and he has spent tons of time around Pierce - both guys who made careers out of scoring through contact, and who played defense with great strength; Paul was extremely good at drawing moving screen fouls...fouls of any kind, really, everywhere...and Kobe would chase through contact if the game was important enough. Tatum is not a good actor, cant keep his cards tight when he's mad at the refs, and rarely applies his strength on defense, even though it seems apparent that he has it in abundance. It feels like these issues are all of a piece.
But so much of that is alleviated when he's allowed to float, or just genuinely playing Center. It's wild that he's able to - but not as wild as him not being willing to smash his big ass shoulders through a screen.

I disagree on the best shot in basketball being, in order of importance: free throws, dunks, and layups all beating out the corner 3. Statistically-speaking the corner 3 has the highest scoring percentage in the NBA. In fact, Joe even said exactly that in a pressor just a week or 2 ago.

You are right, but he is very attackable on the perimeter. He is elite in a drop when he can use his length and can be a rim protector, but isn’t great guarding 1 on 1.
